Demerit points
If you commit a traffic offence you may incur demerit points against your driver's licence. Demerit points are incurred whether the offence is committed in South Australia or interstate.
Demerit points remain on your licence record for three years from the date of the offence.
Ways to check your demerit points
You need a mySA GOV account to check your demerit points online.
Losing your licence because of demerit points
You don't lose demerit points, you acquire them. The number of demerit points incurred depends on the offence and how likely it is to cause a crash.
Demerit point brochure (934.9 KB PDF) has a full list of offences and the points they carry.
Learner's permit and provisional licence - 4 or more points
Full licence - 12 or more points
If you accumulate 12 or more demerit points you will be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver's licence or permit. Offences that incur demerit points remain on your licence record for three years from the date of the offence. The three year period is calculated based on the dates the offences were committed.
If you accumulate:
- 12 to 15 points you lose your right to drive for three months
- 16 to 20 points you lose your right to drive for four months
- more than 20 points you lose your right to drive for five months.
If you are disqualified from driving as a result of accumulating demerit points, the disqualification starts 28 days after a formal notice is sent to you, providing you formally acknowledge receipt of the notice within this time frame.
If you are already disqualified, any new demerit point disqualification will start immediately after the existing disqualification ends.
Drivers who are disqualified from driving for accruing too many demerit points may be eligible to enter into a good behaviour or safer driver agreement.
Demerits warning notice
If you accrue six or more demerit points, you will receive a notice warning that you are close to being disqualified from driving (unless you have an interstate address).
The warning notice shows:
- offPublish Postence details
- the date each offence was committed
- the number of demerit points for each offence.
