Echo (Hyunsook Elizabeth Cho)
Echo is an organizer for Women Cross DMZ.
A longtime activist and organizer, she is the Representative of Washington Butterfly for Hope (Nabi DC), a grassroots organization working on “comfort women” issues. She is also the Co-Chair of the committee for the Washington Statue of Peace in Annandale, Va., which symbolizes the victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese imperial military during World War II.
She was born in the Republic of Korea and immigrated to Fairfax, Va., at the age of 12. She became active in Korean-American issues when she was 14, learning modern Korean and Korean-American history as well as Korean traditional percussion music known as samulnori.
In addition to chanting and playing Korean drums at various rallies, she is a freelance interpreter and consultant, a board member of Korean Queer and Transgender Organization in DC (KQT DC), an advocacy member of National Association of Korean Americans (NAKA), and a mother of two lively girls, Eileen Jung and Justice Jung.
