The longer I live in the Philippines... the... - BecomingFilipino | Facebook

The longer I live in the Philippines... the more I become exposed to, and aware of the intense negatives.  And honestly, it can be really really sad, and really really overwhelming.
But you know what always keeps me optimistic, and always reminds me to feel uplifted...
Filipinos.

I have had the ultimate blessing in my life... to be able to immersively experience the Philippines from north to south.  There are so many good people, so many caring people, so many smart people, so many people doing a lot of things that make a positive impact in the lives of others here...
That is a fact.
And with that, I will sleep, and wake up not just believing... but actively doing what I can, to make small positive impacts in the country that I proudly call home.
This is a reminder to myself…
Never stop trying, to be the best Filipino you can be.
Good night.

Kulas, when your heart begins to truly ache for the Filipinos — kabayan ka na nga namin. 🇵🇭 We have this saying “Oh Pilipinas, ang hirap mo mahalin”, when faced with heartbreaking situations for the country. I hope you don’t get to that point, and continue to shine your positive light. Cheers! You are an inspiration for us to continue loving the Philippines despite of it all.

Yes, always remember that Filipinos are resilient. Like the bamboo tree, it bends as low as it can hold when storms come, until such time the winds don’t blow too strong then it stands straight again and grows high as ever.

Am worrying about a lot of things going on in my country and have become cynical most of the time. But I remain optimistic (ironically). Filipinos have a unique capacity for laugher and humor and appreciation of food no matter how humble or expensive.. so carry on na lang ta ani. I dont know of any group of people who are proud of their pinakbet or bas-uy or bulad and make fun of the situation in their country. Only in the Philippines. Mag cge na lang ta ug katawa ani.

My time in the Philippines was amazing. I am excited to go back in April. I nearly died from a flesh eating amoeba and got sun poisoning snorkeling with neemo and Dora. My fiance and her girls nursed me back to good health. I saw the most beautiful organized chaos on the streets between the cars and scooters I saw armed guards at hotels. I witnessed poverty and a homeless child sleeping on the sidewalk as strangers walked by. I have 5 step daughters living there and they are the greatest blessing of my life. They have their honor morals and self respect and true love for their country. The entire time I was there I never saw anyone angry or sad. Everyone had respect for each other and I was truly treated like Royalty. My heart lives in the Philippines beyond a shadow of a doubt I felt safe wanted and loved and despite poverty I saw a people united and happy with life. Sometimes more doesn't bring peace the Philippines are proof of this. God bless the Philipines

Please read the positive ones. This Country has lots of rich natural resources that many countries never have.I know you are living in the areas where many people are not aligned with the government but me are as a wide reader seen the big potentials of this country. I am positive this country will soon a powerhouse of Southeast Asia and it could also surpass some of the economy in the West. As a Filipino I would still choose to die here in the U.S.
When my mom was in the Philippines and needed to be admitted in the Hospital for emergency reasons, they won’t take her in unless money was in front of them.
Here in the U.S., on my mom’s Dr’s Appointments, her vitals was not good and they sent her to Medical Hospital with ambulance, not asking for any down payment because their priority is her health and life. And no, my mom doesn’t have insurance. They would just sent us a bill but still made sure that my mom was medically taken care of… I love being a Filipino but I don’t want my least years on Earth be in the Philippines.

Resilience is a treat that imbedded to most Filipinos specially when one is constantly bombarded with inequities in life, typhoons, economic/ financial hardships, health, lack of education or lack of care from the government. Eventually, by becoming a Filipino you will know that what was wrong is not the lack of opportunity but the mentality that we had adapted and not try to change it. From the start our systems of government or of life are wrong and those in power to change it did not do anything to improve or change. Maybe we need a Kulas to change that.

You’re amazing, Kulas! That truly reflects how a genuine Canadian thinks. We experience many challenges here, but people generally don’t take negativity too seriously; instead, they move forward and focus on positivity. I still make an effort to treat others kindly, even when they’re unkind to me, and I remain at ease it really captures me the mentality here in Canada. 🇨🇦 The biggest difference lies in the politics and systems of the Philippines 🇵🇭 and Canada 🇨🇦. It’s a significant contrast, especially for those of us who were born in the Philippines and have seen firsthand the corruption and the way people are treated there. Naturally, we react strongly because that is our root, and most of our families are still living in that environment, experiencing it day by day. However, I choose to remain hopeful and optimistic. I believe that one day, there will be a better system in place so that people can enjoy a higher quality of life. ❤️

Wow. I love your mind set That's good. Yes it's a very sad truth. Filipinos are happy people amidst huge struggles and challenges. Iyong nga lang, the road that is good is broken into bits to fill the lowland areas but the bumpy road with small lakes (hehehe paddles, I am exaggerating) in between space is left to become an ocean, then we will float haha. That's exaggerated but come and see it for yourself. HUHUHU.

My heart is full after watching '1 in 7641' on Netflix - it beautifully captures the resilience and kindness of Filipinos, and it reminded me of my recent visit in January where I was touched by the warmth and smiles of the people. I have been talking about my country more and hope to visit again in 2 years with my American family.

Filipinos, as a people, are naturally good-natured. Yet alongside this goodness lies a troubling tendency—the inability to feel truly aggrieved when injustice comes, especially from those in power who are duty-bound to safeguard public resources for the benefit of all. We are so lenient, so patient, so meek, that we sometimes forget we deserve to be treated with dignity by the very leaders we entrusted with authority.
It took us more than 300 years before we finally rose up against Spanish colonial rule and declared, “Enough.” And now, even in this modern age of artificial intelligence, we continue to carry that same outward goodness. But too often, we remain hesitant—too weary or too complacent—to stand up against abusers, corrupt officials, and the manipulating oligarchs who hold the real power in this land.

We all ache to see, hear and feel the betrayal of these Filipinos who are in power to the entire Philippines. It stems down to hearts full of lies, deceit, greed and selfishness,... but don't even think all of these evil deeds escapes the eyes of the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob...all darkness will eventually be brought to the light, and consequences will be experienced by those who took part in this unrighteous acts...I would like to encourage my fellow Filipinos to continue to live a life of integrity in whatever areas of life God has placed us, be it known or unknown...either in big or small positions, we need to uphold truth and righteousness and for sure, God will honor our hearts.

A truly great reminder for us Filipinos not to lose hope, faith and to stay optimistic despite the negative and heartbreaking reality of the country. I totally agree with Angelica Lucille Riviera and @Virg Aine a 100%. Behind the smiles and laughters, are sad stories untold, some hardships fought or still battling yet Filipinos remain grateful and prayerful. This is the root of Filipino resilience. 💪🏻 Laban lang! Kaya.
Stay good, be good and we can make Philippines a better country because Filipinos deserve better.

BecomingFilipino Being with your counTry Canada, made me feel the same way you do with my country Philippines. Canadians are so nice; Vancouver Island is so bLessed with Mother Nature; so many peopLe make impact in the lives of others. an example is a local market where people will really come and support local products (I got the chance to sell your locally produced coffee LeveL Ground, when I was helping a famiLy ☺️) and I will quote "the government is really doing its best, not perfect, but best to serve the people of Canada". but the two differences I observed:
1. in the Philippines, there is no work opportunities that our country can really offer to people who can work hard and smart; we cant work multiple jobs. and hard Labor pays the lowest, unLike here in Canada.
2. Philippines, and I can proudly say, has really strong famiLy ties; that even when youre not a dependent anymore, even when youre married or even when you are financially stabLe, parents still look after you, and when I say look after, I mean, they will still ask if your fridge is full, if the kids have eaten or gone to school, if youre feeling well or are kids healthy and eating healthy. and oh, even when I was already working in a bank, I still have to ask permission from my parents if I could go out and stay up Late 😅 the parents' guidance doesnt end even when I already have my own famiLy to build and guide. and I believe this made Filipinos always carry with us the values and resilience to whatever Life offers us ❤️

Dear Kulas, I am so sorry that you are experiencing all these negatives brought by our greedy, corrupt politicians - the very reason why this country has not progressed the way it should have been. Yes, the Philippines has everything: rich natural resources, stunning landscapes, loving, caring culture, beautiful locals inside and out -- exactly what you have appreciated and embraced all these years. But sadly, corruption (grabe as we describe it) in the government has engulfed this country ever since... What keeps us Filipinos going is our strong faith in God -- that His will must prevail, that those who truly worship Him will still be blessed inspite of everything, that in the right time (even in afterlife) justice will be served for these thieves. Keep the faith, Kulas. I am sure this (being faithful) is one of those amazing things you have learned Becoming Filipino.

What we call good Filipino is just a smear and glimpse of kind acts but that isn't enough for God. I've learned being here 10 years that many don't reach out to help others but they will a foreigner. Many lack to help others in Christ to go to heaven but they call themselves Christians or Catholics. They'd rather stay passive (quiet) than moving mountains for Christ. Many beliefs in Christian's are passive not pushing for full truth. Now if this hurts Filipinos, then God is talking to you. For as a country that you can live in peace, I can concur this is a good life living here. Yes, there are many cool people here but many not moving for Christ biblically and in full scriptures but very few do that here. It's a set back as I see more of the culture truly turning towards the world.

Didn’t go well for me here, a grab app driver refused to bring me back to where he picked me up at, after l insisted 3 times, l asked him to take me to Makati, but the slums that he was taking me in were not appealing, he made a phone call and l became apprehensive, when l asked him to bring me back again, he got off the car, went to pee in the street, when he came back he asked me to get out, luckily across the street there was a gas station, l called another grab taxi he brought me back unscathed, he was great.
Then my flight to Coron was cancelled, l was only going for three days, l had to abort the trip, then it was raining and a lot of places they do not take credit cards, which made it difficult at restaurants and grocery stores. Going back to Japan today and the 8th back to San Francisco, California.

You're a good and honest man Kulas. We're glad that you're no longer a "Becoming Filipino" but a full pledge Filipino now. Thanks for being one of us, Kabayan! Don't mind so much the negative side of the Filipinos especially those corrupt ones. Just focus on the positive side and enjoy life as a Filipino citizen. God bless!

I'm a Filipina that almost forgot I was and have always been reminded everytime I visit my homeland. I've lived in so many countries and have adopted so many different cultures, languages and through it all, i have grown spiritually because of this. I learned that all people are the same. The only barrier we all have is when we dont cultivate our God given Spirit of love, Mercy and compassion for one another. Kulas, more power to you. May God protect you, His angels surround you everywhere you go, you and your family.

Kyle just live positive the issues of our country is down to our leader and our politicians to unite and work together for the best of our country. I am not taking sides to any politicians I am only taking side or give my support to those politicians who can help resolve the issues of our country which are facing just now and can help the poor Filipinos to have a better life. That's my wish for my country and country men. It's so sad...

Intensity is how you described how Filipinos live their lives. Be in it and you come alive and feel every sense of being.
