의학과 보건학을 전공하고 현재 한양대학교 의과대학 예방의학교실 교수로 있다. ‘건강’ ‘취약 집단’ ‘정치학’이라는 키워드를 가지고 건강정치학을 공부하고 있으나, 최근 ‘건강’을 재정의할 필요성을 느껴 ‘온존’이라는 개념을 갈고닦는 중이다.
정치는 “운명을 거스르는 이론”이라는 브라질 정치가 로베르토 웅거의 정의를 좋아한다. 물을 막는 것이 아니라 흐르게 하는 것이 치수治水임을 보여준 ‘우왕’, 포정해우?丁解牛라는 고사성어의 주인공 ‘포정’을 건강정치학의 롤 모델로 삼고 있다. “모두가 온존(well-being for ALL)”한 은하수를 꿈꾼다.

서른이 넘어 의사가 되었다. 첫 임상실습에서 만난 환자는 당뇨합병증으로 이미 시력을 잃었고 이제는 신장도 잃어 막 투석을 시작한 40대 초반의 농부였다. 가난한 환자는 검사조차 비용을 이유로 거부했다. 돈이 많으면 좋겠다는 생각을 처음으로 했다. 하지만 곧, 이미 아픈 환자에게 치료비를 내어주는 것보다, 건강한 사람을 계속 건강하게, 조금 아픈 사람들을 더 아프지 않게 돕는 일도 있다는 걸 알게 되었다. 건강은 인간의 기본권이며, 사람이 아픈 건 사회의 책임이기도 하다고 생각한다. 담배 피지 마세요, 운동 하세요, 잔소리하는 동네 의사의 삶과 개인이 건강할 수 있는 건강한 사회를 만드는 데 관심이 많다. 접기
