MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 22nd February, 2019) German non-governmental food aid agency Welthungerhilfe, working in North Korea, has the impression that the current food situation in the East Asian nation is tense and is going to launch its own assessment to examine the nutrition situation in different regions of the country, Simone Pott, a spokeswoman for Welthungerhilfe, told Sputnik on Friday.

"There are no hard facts and figures yet about the food production in 2019. But we sense that the food situation right now is tense ... Welthungerhilfe will start its own assessments in the country to find out how the nutrition situation is in the different provinces," Pott said.

Speaking about the possible causes of food insecurity in North Korea, the spokeswoman noted bad weatherconditions in 2018 which had a bad effect on the country's agriculture.

"There was a heat wave in August 2018 followed by strong floods in certain areas of the country. Thousands of hectares of arable land was destroyed next to houses of families," Pott stressed.

Welthungerhilfe has been working in North Korea since 1996 and is the only German NGO which has an office in the capital city of Pyongyang. In 2017, its funding reached 1.32 million Euros ($1.5 million), according to the official website.
