장생포의 귀신고래

미국의 탐험가이자 고고학자이다. 1912년 일제강점기 때 경상남도 울산에서 귀신고래를 연구한 것을 비롯해 많은 탐험을 하였다. 20세기 초반 고비사막과 몽골 등 중국에 대한 탐사에서 주도적인 역할을 했고, 미국자연사박물관 관장을 역임했다. 그는 탐사 도중 여러번 위기상황을 겪었고 그 일화가 영화 '인디애나 존스'의 에피소드로 만들어졌다.
앤드루스는 1912년 울산 장생포의 귀신고래의 생태를 확인하기 위해 일본 포경회사의 도움을 얻어 한국 방문을 하여, 귀신고래를 찍고 남은 필름으로 서울의 모습들을 찍었는데 이때 찍은 12분 분량의 비디오가 워싱턴 자연사 박물관에 보관 되어 있다. 그가 미국에 보낸 귀신 고래 골격은 뉴욕 자연사 박물관과 워싱턴 자연사 박물관에 있다.
그의 저서 중 하나인 <Whale Hunting With Gun and Camera>(1916년 출판)에서는 한국인에 대한 기록도 있는데, 일화 중에는 귀신 고래를 포경 후 미국으로 가져 갈 고래 뼈를 쌓았는데 그 뼈들을 한국의 민간인들이 가져가서 국을 끓이는 데 사용하자, 그가 머무는 일본식 집의 창호지에 구멍을 내고 뼈를 훔쳐갈려고 하는 한국인의 다리를 총으로 쏘고 그가 비명을 지르며 달아나자 희열을 느꼈다고 언급하는 기록이 나온다.
한국에는 몇 달간 있었고 한국인들 사진들도 여러 장 찍었지만, 한국인의 이름 단 한명도 적혀있지 않다. 한국인들에 관해서 목표도 없고, 매우 게으르게 산다고 언급하였다.
로이채프만 앤드류스의 동상은 울산 장생포 고래박물관 옆에 서 있다.

Subject: Covers the Hunting of Whales in theearly 20th Century
Since the title of the book is Hunting Whales with Gun and Camera, the reader SHOULD expect that this volume would cover some of the more gruesome aspects of whale hunting in the early 20th Century. It is a good report on the 'state-of-the-art' of the whaling industry at the time it was written.

Subject: Excellent Book but Not Polically Correct
This is an excellent book on shore and steam whaling in the early 20th Century, with looks of valuable information that can never be duplicated. However, it definitely is not politically correct, as it goes into detail as to how whales are hunt, killed, and processed. A lot of information on the early Japanese whaling industry in the Sea of Japan as well.

They were living an utterly lazy, aimless life and although they never seemed to know where the next meal was coming from they looked content and well enough fed.
