This book receives 5 stars based largely on its importance. It is a riveting story and is very well written, however its significance takes the book to a new level. This book explores Polish-Jewish relations surrounding World War II and the Holocaust and brings to light new realities of what it means when people say, "lots of Europeans are Anti-Semitic."

I hope to add to this review later on as I am only part way into the book. I found it in a used bookshop in Perth and I am interested in the topic since it is in the North East region of Poland where I have ancestry.
Right now I am thinking of how this book would be banned in Poland. The discussion of the local Polish citizen's collaboration with German atrocities against Jews is now punishable by law so I will have to avoid any such discussions on my next visit to Poland.
On 15 October 2015, Polish Prosecution opened a libel probe against this author. The office was acting under a paragraph of the criminal code that "provides that any person who publicly insults the Polish nation is punishable by up to three years in prison"
Such laws really hamper any attempt to find out more about the complicity of local populations during wartime and thus we cannot ever understand or learn from such horrible events. (less)

This story, about the brutal massacre of the Jewish population in Jedwabne, Poland by the local gentile population, is the most disturbing book I have ever read.
