2021년 10월 세상을 떠난 개리 레드야드(Gari K. Ledyard) 교수는 미국 컬럼비아대학에서 한글의 기원을 연구한 대표적 한국학 학자입니다. 그는 한글이 몽골의 파스파문자를 바탕으로 독자적인 음운학에 기초해 창의적으로 창제되었다고 주장하며, 훈민정음 해례본 연구로 박사학위를 받았습니다. 이후 미국 내에서 한국학 분야를 개척한 그는 1991년 9월, 당시 평민당 총재였던 김대중 전 대통령의 미국 강연에서 유창한 한국어로 사회를 맡을 정도로 한국을 운명으로 여겼다고 합니다.

19세기 말 기독교 선교사들에 의해 시작된 미국의 한국학 연구는 1960년대부터 본격화되었고 시대를 달리하면서 한국학의 실체와 정의를 탐색하기 위한 새로운 길을 모색하고 있습니다. 『Pioneers of Korean Studies (Revised Edition)』는 한국학을 대표하는 10명의 외국 학자를 소개하고 있습니다. 이들의 의견과 시각 차이는 크지만, 한목소리로 상호협력의 가치를 존중하고 연대함으로써 한국학을 발전시켜야 한다고 말합니다. 해외 한국학 학자들의 연구와 이들이 말하는 한국학의 미래를 함께 생각해보면 좋겠습니다.

이 책은 2004년 나온 Pioneers of Korean Studies의 개정판이다. 초판에서는 1부와 2부로 나누어 1부에서는 조선 말기부터 일제강점기를 거쳐 근대에 이르기까지 한국학 발전에 기여한 11명의 한국 학자들을 소개했다. 그러나 이들 대부분은 너무 많이 알려졌고, 시기나 연구경향 등에서 현재의 한국학과 많은 차이가 있다. 때문에 개정판은 2부에서 다뤘던 미국과 동아시아를 중심으로 해외에서 한국학 분야를 연구하는 학자들의 인터뷰로 구성했다. 이들 각각은 의견과 시각 차이가 클 뿐만 아니라 한국학의 과거와 현재, 미래에 대한 목소리도 다양하다. 그럼에도 이들이 공통적으로 강조하는 것은 상호협력의 가치를 존중하고 연대함으로써 한국에 대한 지식을 발전시켜야 한다는 것이다. 이 책은 한국학의 미래를 구상하기 위한 논의에 기여할 것이며 다양하고 논쟁적인 견해는 상호 이해와 교류의 가교가 될 것이다.

This book is a revised edition of the Pioneers of Korean Studies published in 2004. Since its publication, the book has been widely read by the students of Korean studies and general readers interested in the particular subject and the history of Korean studies.

Korean studies has been shaped in diverse ways since the beginning of Korea’s modernization in the late nineteenth century. From the perspective of the history of thought, there exist two arenas within the development of Korean studies.

The first to take root in Korea is bongukhak (homeland studies), founded and developed by Koreans in the latter half of the nineteenth century, followed by Joseonhak (Joseon studies) during the colonial period, and gukhak (national studies) after the liberation of 1945.

The second is Korean studies (hangukhak), which began in the 1960s as part of area studies in the US. Korean studies as we know today can be said to be the result of indigenous and non-indigenous traditions interacting closely with and mutually influencing each other from two different academic roots.

What follows in this book is a collection of various portraits of Korean studies with its complexity and diversity originating from a coalescence of these two traditions. It consists of interviews with prominent scholars working in the field of Korean studies abroad mainly in the US and East Asia The original intention was to include various scholars who are active in Europe, Australia, and other continents that have experienced rapid growth in Korean studies programs and academic activities.

Reviews of early scholars in Korea and interviews with prominent scholars of Korean studies abroad are initiated as a reflection of the current situation where there exists not only a huge gap in views and opinions, but also a serious lack of intellectual conversation and mutual exchange between “Koreanists” overseas and at home. The reviews and interviews an academic portrait of Korean studies presented through the personal voices of individual scholars talking about the past, present, and future of Korean studies-are expected to create a forum for stimulating dialogue and exchanging ideas, theories, and perspectives between the two traditions.

The series of interviews and reviews not only sketch the academic studies of Koreanists at home and abroad but also provide a glimpse into their personal backgrounds as they share their personal histories, such as their personal histories of how they became interested in Korean studies and their views and positions on this subject as an intellectual endeavor and academic program.

In addition, each interview and review invites the readers to engage in a serious conversation with these scholars on many of the important and sometimes controversial issues such as the identity of Korean history, the root of capitalism in Korean history, colonial modernity, nationalism, Confucianism, and what was frequently referred to as the “East Asian” perspective.

Despite differences in a diverse array of opinions on these issues, this collection of reviews and interviews will show that these scholars have directly or indirectly emphasized the following: Koreanists from all corners of the globe share a deep and lasting concern for advancing knowledge of Korea, respect for the value of mutual cooperation, and a sense of solidarity.
