Benjamin Netanyahu’s government has temporarily stalled discussions on the potential annexation of the West Bank following a direct warning from the United Arab Emirates, the Washington Post reported on Saturday.
The annexation move, which constitutes a clear violation of international law, was reportedly a high priority for Netanyahu to shore up support among domestic voters.
The UAE's special envoy Lana Nusseibeh told media outlets on Tuesday that any annexation would be a "red line" for the UAE and would "foreclose on the idea of regional integration."
This public message was followed by a series of private warnings, which seemingly caught the Israeli government off guard, according to sources quoted in the Washington Post's report.
The diplomatic pressure appears to have had an immediate effect. By Thursday, the issue of annexation was removed from the official agenda of a high-level consultation involving Netanyahu and his senior ministers, according to the report.
It was not clear whether the warnings will permanently dissuade Netanyahu against annexation as he faces pressure from coalition allies to act quickly on the issue amidst growing international recognition of the State of Palestine, it added.
