by Ilan Pappé (Author), Noam Chomsky (Author) Format: Kindle Edition

From the targeting of schools and hospitals, to the indiscriminate use of white phosphorus, Israel's conduct in 'Operation Cast Lead' has rattled even some of its most strident supporters. In this book, Noam Chomsky and Ilan Pappé survey the fallout from that devastation, and place the massacre in Gaza in the context of Israel's long-standing war against the Palestinians. Gaza in Crisis is a rigorous, historically informed and much-needed analysis of the situation and will be welcomed by all those eager for Chomsky's insights into yet another political catastrophe.

Gaza in Crisis contains a series of relatively short but dense and informative essays and interviews by one or both authors.
I find their insights to be highly complementary, as Chomsky generally speaks of the conflict after 1967, while Pappe has conducted extensive research into the events leading up to the 1948 war, relying on the declassified Israeli military archives as well as Palestinian witness accounts.
This book is informative both to people relatively unfamiliar with the conflict and those with more knowledge. While sketching out a broad outline of major events between 1948 and the december 2008 Israel attack on Gaza, there are a few more focused essays presenting material I had no yet encountered in the author's other work. In particular, Pappe has an essay investigating 5 major trends in US politics and society that he identifies as most influential on US Israeli policy, which I found highly thought provoking. In general the authors document the government of Israel's profound disregard for human rights and its constant pursuit of expansion over security. The brutal conditions and murderous military attacks to which thousands of innocent people in the occupied territories have been subjected to for decades is discussed at length.
Other essays deal with Nakba denialism, analysis of the one/binational and two state solutions, and the evolution of Israeli policy and brutality in Gaza.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to better understand this complex issue.

This quite densely written book presents a good review of the facts. While it does not claim to be as comprehensive as, say, Robert Fisk's monumental account, it provides a good continuation of that scholar's work. Fisk's book ends around 2000, and this continues the sad and depressing story up to the horrendous attack upon Gaza, or should we say the latest of a long line of attacks upon Gaza.

Fisk's book ends around 2000, and this continues the sad and depressing story up to the horrendous attack upon Gaza, or should we say the latest of a long line of attacks upon Gaza.
He also makes the very valid point that the 'International community' tends to talk about 1967 as the 'established borders' and the validity of a 'two-state' solution. This ignores the fact that the Palestinians would be left with an unworkable rump of their own country, as well as still being in the political grip of Israel.
The constant support of the US in this is underlined. The book rightly reasserts the single state alternative, except that the single state would not treat the majority of its population as serfs.
Secondly it reminds us that the creation of the Israeli state in 1948 was an act of ethnic cleansing, every bit as obscene as the actions in the Balkan wars. People were forced from their homes and villages by the army and murdered if they stayed. All-in-all it paints a depressing picture which seems to be lurching ever onward to WW3.

Finally, a well documented account of the methodical dismemberment of the Palestinian homeland and culture by the Zionist occupiers. OUTRAGE! This is the feeling this book left me with. Israel, and America, as its' imperial benefactor, must be held accountable for the atrocities of genocide and ethnic cleansing perpetrated against the indigenous population of Palestine over the past century. HISTORICAL TRUTH AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT. This must be the basis for of a peaceful solution --- a two state solution. As is stated by Israeli historians, Israel herself is sowing the seeds of its own destruction with each new settlement in the Occupied Territories.
As always, anything that Noam Chomsky has put his pen to is amazing, analytical and accurate writing.

This collection of essays and Q&A sections was persuasive in its analysis, educational in its scope and therefore fulfilled my hopes on all fronts. I've always been an admirer of Noam Chomsky, but Pappe's writing was new to me.
In terms of filling in the gaps in my knowledge on this most divisive of conflicts, it was successful. I made multiple bookmarks in my kindle copy, hoping to be able to refer to them in the future. It's one of those books which you wish you had on you at all times, lest some uninformed swallower of mass media regurgitates the typical slogans and propaganda that fills the airwaves.
Read if you wish to understand the horror of the sustained conflict, the paucity of hope for the poor afflicted, and the stark policy underlying every single move.

I wish the whole world knew about the atrocities committed on the Palestinian people by Israel with the help of the U.S. I wish something could be done to take away some of the power of AIPAC. I wish the U.N. would act to stop the expansion of the settlements.
I don't understand why Israel has been free to violate international laws for so many decades. No wonder that the result is the hatred demonstrated by the Islamists who are looking for revenge no matter how brutal and savage it is achieved.

This book brings together the analyses of two of the leading commentators on the subject of Gaza, and particularly of the run-up to and execution of Operation Cast Lead. The unrelenting hatred of the Israeli rulers and their obedient military executioners is, of course, directed overwhelmingly
a. against virtually defenceless victims, in the military sense, and
b.with the aim of destroying any viable Palestinian state.
These matters are not just on record for those who seek out references, as Chomsky and Pappé do, but is manifest through the actions of the Israeli authorities, backed, sadly, by the great majority of the Jewish population of Israel, it would seem. With the historian's analysis of the background, and Chomsky's characteristically pungent notes on the current situation, this book could be read alongside the heart-breaking witness account "Eyes in Gaza" by the Norwegian humanitarian doctors Gilbert and Fosse.
What the media generally depict as a cruel( well, not too cruel- the victims are undifferentiated Arabs, or terrorists) necessity on the part of "plucky little Israel" has immense human cost.
I would also recommend the works by Jonathan Cook, who explains unchallengeably that the Jewish state's underlying policy is not just to kill Palestinians, but, even more, their hopes.
Quoting a leading Likud publicist from 1996, Chomsky notes that Netanyahu ( and, in general, the whole Israeli establishment) can contemplate a "Palestinian state" if the Palestinians choose to call it that rather than "fried chicken", and anybody who studies the "facts on the ground" can see that the "two-state solution" means that a KFC takeover of Palestine is, indeed, in the offing.

Another well documented work by two excellent authors of great intellect. These types of books should be in all our libraries and schools to ensure that more people get better acquainted with the realities of the Middle East. The abuse of the Palestinian people has gone on for decades and the average westerner seems to know little more than the a few ‘well-worn’ sound bites the media spoon feeds them. This is especially true of the American media. The duplicity of values in reporting conflicts in the Middle East is staggering. To say or believe that an ethnically cleansed and brutally occupied people are not allowed to defend themselves against an apartheid regime is ridiculous.
Unfortunately for the Palestinians, the United Nations is a gutless organisation that fails to defend them against Israel’s contempt of the Geneva Conventions and breaches of UN resolutions. The UN just makes a few idle threats about holding Israel responsible for war crimes. These invariably diminish with time or get blocked by the American veto.
We owe a special thanks to the authors of this book for their courage in reporting the truth.

3.0 out of 5 starsThe book has promise but is "new" Chomsky dominated
Reviewed in the United States on 19 August 2011

Some of you may be reading this and thinking what is the problem with that? "New" Chomsky is not as great and detailed an author as old Chomsky. The citations and research are still there, but the wording seems lazier. It may be me but that is my opinion. Pappe seems to follow Chomsky's lead in the writing instead of dominating readers like he usually does. Here is a long review I wrote months ago...
------
I completed this book yesterday so I figured I would give a review to people who like to read books about the Middle East and Palestine in particular. It takes two prominent authors Ilan Pappe (author of A History of Modern Palestine, the Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine, etc) and Noam Chomsky (Hegemony or Survival, Manufacturing Consent, etc) to supposedly discuss the history and political situation of Gaza. I put supposedly because it seems the book is overall more about Palestine, US/Israeli policy, and possible ways to pressure the US and Israel than about Gaza itself. Two of the eight chapters deal specifically with Gaza, mostly from 2004-present day. One chapter deals with the issue of a one state solution, another with US involvement in the Palestine question, one referring to the place of the Nakbah in Israeli history, Middle East peace plan, a conversation with the two authors about various subjects, and an overall scene of the area through Chomsky's eyes.
Now at this point I must be honest, when it comes to Noam Chomsky, I treat him like Wall Street Journal readers treat a Milton Friedman. They may agree with his overall points perhaps 80-85% of the time, but the language he uses is just so repetitive and colloquial based that you would never want to cite him in any research. Noam Chomsky is not a political scientist or a historian, he is a Linguistics professor and innovator. So although his research may be amazing, his words (the first time you read them) shocking and charged, one would be hard pressed to see the man cited by anyone involving the Palestine question. As I know of he only has one book other than this one specifically about the Palestine issue entitled "The Fateful Triangle" from 1983, and a few articles here and there.
Now Ilan Pappe is another issue for he has been writing about the Palestine issue, almost exclusively from the mid 80s onwards. He is the author of around 10 books on the subject and is currently writing or putting out almost 8 more. He has written about the role of the British in 1948, the origins of the conflict, a history of the Husayni family, and about the Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine in 1948. Sometimes like any author he comes off rather colloquial but nowhere to the extreme of a Chomsky.
As a person who has read every Pappe book and perhaps 27 or 28 Chomsky books it seems Pappe wanted to do more "Chomsky-speak" than his usual self. Usually in a Pappe book you see hundreds of citations with wide-ranging references and even to my disdain usual a good amount of his own. This book is more dialogue based, which the majority of Chomsky book are, which means less research and more recollection are the basis. This kind of book is full of repetition and not a lot of facts (if one is used to the subject) but can be a nice break from denser reads on Palestine.
I would not recommend this book to beginners or advanced readers on Palestine alike. For the beginner it will give the wrong impression on Palestine research and writing, in addition to assuming a decent basis in the subject. For advanced readers the book could be used as a break to ease the mind but will give little in terms of academic substance and should not be used for research in any way. I would recommend it to 4th year undergraduates in Middle East or 1st year Graduate students in Middle East who have a background, but not enough they could write over 100pgs on a subject.
-
Overall I would give the book a 6.5/10 because of my background, but I could see how others would rate it higher.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating book let down by writing style

The other reviews are all correct that this is a fascinating book with great research and well documented sources, in examining the real truth and underlying flows of US and Israeli policy towards Palestine from the 1948 initial conflict to the recent genocidal level attacks made on the Palestinian populace in Gaza (the book was published in 2011). As such it is a real eye opener in arguing the case exactly opposite to how the conflicts are usually reported in the UK media and the approach typically (though not always) taken by UK governments as well as the USA and Israel.
The book is essentially a series of essays and a joint interview on different facets of the subject. While Chomsky is credited by most reviewers, the majority of the book is actually written by Pappe. That is where the problems for me lies in that his best essay on the history of US involvement on the Palestinian issue shows succinctly how matters have changed and where the problems lie. Sadly too often his later essays on more recent events tend to come across as emotional and this in turn affects the clarity of writing style and the structure of argument followed. There is little doubt there is an incredible amount of incisive scholarship in these pages by Pappe (and to a lesser extent by Chomsky), but in pursuing his points he seems to mirror at times the one-sidedness that both authors criticize Israel and the USA for.
This is not to say the points being made are wasted, simply that they are not as concisely or objectively made in what is clearly a very heated debate. Hence my three star rating I fear!

Its incredibly difficult to get a handle on what's happening in Palestine because of the media's pro-European (hence pro-Israeli) bias - that, and coupled with ongoing guilt for the Holocaust - something to which Europeans have a great deal to feel guilty about but about which the Palestinian people should have no remorse whatsoever. Nonetheless, the victims of post-Holocaust Israeli expansionism have not been the perpertratos of the crimes agains the Jews, the Europeans, but the arabic indigenous settlers of the land now known as Israel, the Palestinians.
Pappe maps this crisis over the years and shows how US/Israeli media bias has perpetuated gross myths about Israel, particularly the Nakbah, or palestinian holocaust, of 1948. The denial of the war crimes of the Israelis stems from refusing to acknowledge the ethnic cleansing of Palestine that started then, in 1948. An excellent book

In these dialogues, Noam Chomsky, recently voted the worlds greatest intellectual, along with Ilan Pappe, exposes the atrocities, brutalities and murder inflicted on the Palestinian people by the Israeli state. This is a fantastic , erudite and clear account of how the people have suffered, and how the Israelis have repeatedly defied international law to continue their shameful occupation of Palestinian lands and further expel the Palestinian people.
The usual suspects of the right and hard-line pro-Israelis all despise Chomsky because they are unable to contradict his immaculately sourced, factual accounts of the abuse of the Palestinians at the hands of Israel, but the usual cries of anti-Semitism sound desperate, hollow and fraudulent in the face of such a clear and intelligent analysis.

Although the total number of Palestinians killed in the last 70 years of conflict with Israel is less than that of one month in Syria, the Israelis are waging genocide.
HAMAS calling for total destruction of Israel is rhetoric, they really want a 2 State solution, whereas Chomsky & Pappe want one state.

This is simply a repetitive essay regurgitating the usual Leftist hate for America , its citizens, and its government. For a more balanced perspective, read " The Case for Israel" by Alan Dershowitz.
