Exploring Peace: Bridging the Micro and Macro
This week, we had the honor of hosting Alan Clayton, Director of World Beyond War and a close collaborator of Johan Galtung, for an insightful Peace Practice Experience. Alan shared his expertise on the connection between grassroots peace efforts and large-scale systemic change, sparking deep reflection and discussion.
To explore this concept further, we engaged in AVP-style experiential activities, offering a hands-on approach to understanding peace-building. It was an incredible opportunity to examine how AVP, a grassroots (micro- level) initiative that empowers individuals and communities to harness their transforming power for peace - building, can connect with World Beyond War, a global movement (macro-level) dedicated to ending war and fostering a just, sustainable peace.
Our discussion drew from Johan Galtung’s work and the 1998 article, "The Peace Movement: An Exercise in Micro-Macro Linkages", which emphasizes how individual actions and grassroots initiatives (micro level) can influence larger societal structures and political decisions (macro level).
This experience underscored the power of collaboration between micro and macro peace efforts. How can we continue bridging these levels to create a world beyond war?
