TRUMP: NORTH KOREA "BLEW UP THEIR SITE"

Satellite images from last week show that North Korea is making numerous improvements to the infrastructure at a nuclear research facility, according to a new study.

The images, obtained by North Korea analysis outlet 38 North, come just weeks after President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed an agreement that called for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

The satellite photos indicate that North Korea is quickly progressing on several adjustments to the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center.

The improvements include a new cooling water pump house, multiple new buildings, completed construction on a cooling water reservoir and an apparently active radiochemical laboratory. It is unclear whether the reactor is still in operation, the report said.

38 North notes that North Korean nuclear officials are expected to proceed with “business as usual” until Kim orders official changes to procedure.

The agreement between Trump and Kim, signed at the historic summit in Singapore earlier this month, commits the U.S. to “security guarantees” in exchange for a denuclearized Korean Peninsula. Critics said that the deal was unspecific and gave too much to North Korea without securing anything for the U.S. in return.

Ahead of the meeting between the two leaders, North Korea claimed to have destroyed its Punggye-ri nuclear testing site.

Dear Rebecca, I’m CC’ing your brother David Solnit who will hopefully relay this message to you. Its stunning to me how badly liberals (and even progressives like you!) are undermining this Korea peace process. We can hate on Trump all we want, as we should, but him saying the US-ROK war drills are provocative and calling to halt them in exchange for freezing North Korea’s missile and nuclear tests is what the peace movements around the world have been calling for. I’m writing you from Seoul, and let me tell you, nearly every Korean, from conservative to progressive, are DELIGHTED by the Singapore Summit. Koreans around the world WANT an end to the Korean War, and instead of fighting Trump, were now having to educate leftists that this is GOOD, that this step is positive towards achieving a peace treaty and denuclearization.

But you of all people should support any step towards de-militarization, including war games rehearsing “decapitation” strikes and regime change, and the potential withdrawal of 30k US troops from Korea, which Trump has supported. I know Asian-Americans are invisible, even to US social movements, but please be an ally to those of us who have worked tirelessly to be here and now. Obama or Trump, who gives a shit. Let’s end this war which has held Koreans hostage for seven decades and not allowed the Korean people their own sovereignty. Here’s a terrific piece by FAIR on the silencing of Korean voices in this conversation.

A feminist should ask, what are the people most impacted by the Singapore Summit saying? President Moon has nearly 80 percent support for his diplomacy with North Korea. He was swept in by the South Korean Candlelight Revolution where 1 In 3 took to the streets in the harshest winter to oust his predecessor Park, which you may have missed. I’ll be in the Bay Area from June 28-July 17, so would welcome the opportunity to bring you up to speed on the Korean War, the US’ complicity in division and quashing of democratic movements, and anything else you want to know. I’ve been meeting with Korean feminist peace movements to strategize our inclusion in the Korea peace process and can share this with you too as we will be launching with the Nobel Women’s Initiative and WILPF a 2020 Women-Led Korea Peace Treaty campaign. Please check out our Women Cross DMZFacebook page on tons of media and our actions last month in Korea, including a 1200 women peace walk in the DMZ. https://fair.org/…/korean-voices-missing-from-major-papers…/

Anasuya Sengupta Astra Taylor Astra, I'm an advisor for Women Cross DMZ, and I want to affirm what Christine has said in this critical post. Is there any way to get folks like Rebecca - whom we admire and consider an ally in so many ways - to understand the perspective of Korean feminists and their supporters across the world? <3

Jo Lee I had a meeting with an American couple who are retired from their professorship with a speciality on East Asian region the other day, and I was so surprised to see them surprised of me being satisfied with the results of the Singapore Summit. And they asked me if I trust Trump. Then I asked back what else we should do: although we are aware that Trump is not trustworthy, all we need to do is to harness him to do what he has said. I think the US liberals should start with the acknowledgement of their failure to deal with North Korea, before criticizing Trump on this issue. Anyway, there are so many other things to denounce his policy. Rebecca Solnit has visited South Korea last year and hope she can chat with Korean feminists who are great fans of her.
