Joy Yoon’s descriptions of her personal experiences with North Koreans is also surprisingly practical in my own life. This book opens up the possibilities of what might be plausible if we just try to understand other people’s points of view. And it demonstrates how this new understanding can lead to unimaginable breakthroughs in the midst of difficult circumstances, even with North Korea.

Joy Yoon helps people see North Korea from a new perspective. Understanding them as who they are is critical and timely since we began to unlock the door. Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding. We will be able to work with them towards a future of peace and prosperity as much as we can see the true face of them, that is, their potentialities. Above all, as a female reader, I am very impressed by the author, a wife and a mother raising four children and a social worker, done writing this book. Thanks!

Policy experts, foreign service officers, and humanitarian workers will be refreshed by this graciously realistic portrait of living in the DPRK. Joy Yoon’s style is clean and clear. Throughout the book there are accounts of bold action, humor, bafflement, frustration, and affectionate respect. This is the kind of deep understanding that should inform foreign policy.

Joy Yoon has successfully given a clear perspective on the daily living of North Koreans, bringing into focus the similarities to citizens in the rest of the world who share the same concerns for family, work, health, community, religion and government. She opens a window to a culture that has intrigued us for many years. Her love and care, for the needs of the people she has come to know so well, are eloquently revealed. It is obvious that Joy's family is united in their commitment to improve the lives of North Koreans as they genuinely enjoy living among them. The book is written with necessary sensitivity but leaves the reader well informed and hopeful that one day we may meet and interact with individuals and families from the country that has captured Joy's heart.

5.0 out of 5 starsExceptional Book Getting to the Heart of North Korean PeopleNovember 23, 2018

I am delighted to write a review about this outstanding book. Having been in South Korea for nearly thirty years, I am mostly aware of the Korean culture and history. However, this book enriched, increased and expanded my knowledge of the North Korean culture. Joy Yoon has a deep understanding of the naturof the Korean people and goes beyond the political aspect getting to the heart of the matter. She and her husband have established a trust and acceptance that is Christ like. Anyone reading "Discovering Joy" will not only become more knowledgeable of the North Korean culture but will marvel at the way Sang and Joy have touched the lives of the North Korean people.

If you are a US citizen, this might be a book that you would have never imagined before. Can a US citizen live in North Korea? Have the US and NK really been enemies against each other last 70 years? Joy Yoon answers your questions and you will be surprised by the joy from her story of the Yoon family in NK. If you have been looking for a meaningful book to read, I highly recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 starsMust read! Challenges & Expands My View of North Korea - poignant & thought provoking!November 2, 2018
Format: Kindle Edition
Joy has shared her family's experiences of getting to know and better understand the lives and hearts of "every day, normal" North Korean people. Her real-life perspective has challenged how I think of North Koreans and provides excellent insight into why North Koreans think, act and live as they do. You will not get this viewpoint from the US Media or casual visitors to the country. Joy educates me on how socialism/communism is conducted in the "real world." This book gives me more hope for a peaceful, unified Korea as the USA and South Korea engage directly with the North Koreans.
