'식민지 근대화' 재론/ 김낙년
<국문초록>
식민지기 조선에서 일어난 제도변화나 공업화 또는 자본주의의 전개, 그리고 그것이 해방 후에 미친 영향을 어떻게 평가할 것인가를 둘러싸고 '수탈론'과 '식민지 근대화론' 간의 논쟁이 전개된 바 있다. 근래에는 사회사 또는 문화사 영역에서 종래의 논쟁구도 자체를 비판하는 '식민지 근대성'에 관한 논의가 활발하다. 본고에서는 이들 논의를 식민지경제, 지배체제와 정치, 사회문화 영역으로 나누어 소개하면서 어떤 점에서 견해가 나누어지는지 그 논점을 정리하였다. 이 때 각 논의가 의거하고 있는 개념이나 접근방법이 식민지를 분석하는 데 어떤 강점을 가지고 있는지 그와 동시에 그 한계는 무엇인지를 밝히고자 하였다. 이를 통해 각 논의 간의 소통과 상호 보완의 가능성을 모색하였다.

<Abstract>
There has been an on-going controversy between the 'exploitation view' and the 'colonial modernization view' on how to assess the consequences of the institutional changes and industrialization derived by Japanese colonizers in Korea during the colonial period, and how to identify what kind of legacies were passed on to Korea's post liberation period. Recently another view has emerged that criticizes both of the view, and focuses instead on social and cultural aspects of colonial Korea. This third view, called the 'colonial modernity view', shares with the second view in stressing the complicated nature of colonialism and modernity, but unlike the other views, perceives modernity as negative. This article surveys recent studies on political, economic, social, and cultural aspects of colonial Korea, and makes clear the points in which each view diverges from the others. Recognizing that each of the three views has its own strengths and weaknesses in different aspects of their arguments, this article explores are as in which they come together in mutual understanding and complementary cooperation.
