Fast-paced, informative, and sensitive book about Kenneth Bae's recent imprisonment in North Korea
ByM. Jameson May 5, 2016
Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase

Well written and quick paced account of Kenneth Bae's 2+ years with the North Korea's judicial system. Since the events are so recent the narrative gives an excellent insight into what is going on now and how the present North Koreans think. This book was very helpful for me to understand better what to us seems so insane but to them is logical. Even the leaders are so isolated from what is happening in the world I think it accounts for their bizarre and counterproductive actions. Several times in the book North Koreans said they just wanted to be left alone but actually it's the exact opposite with the leadership which often behaves like toddlers having a tantrum so as to get the world's attention. It's so sad 24 million innocent people are subjected to living like this in isolation and captivity. I think Kenneth Bae's book shows that most North Koreans are good and honest people with sensitive hearts who love their families dearly. Even though the North Koreans who came in contact with Kenneth Bae were convinced he had tried to overthrow their "beloved" government and way of life, still they were for the most part compassionate towards him. This book is well worth reading if you are interested in North Korea and while I hate to say I "enjoyed" it, I could hardly put it down.

I found this to be a very readable story of the author's time captive in North Korea. It is detailed enough to satisfy my desire to know more about North Korea, it's a beautiful testimony to God and to Kenneth's faith through a hard core trial - I'll be recommending to friends.

Enjoy! What a great story.

I really enjoyed this book! I found myself learning a lot about North Korea (googling quite a few things that came up in the book like music and geography and court cases). Kenneth's story was well-composed, exciting and authentic. It was also very readable which is nice since I find that sometimes personal stories like this are thrown together and don't seem to be written in a cohesive and well thought out manner. He also made me care about the North Korean people in a way I never have before and hungry to learn more. God is Good. His plans are not our own. Kenneth's story shows this truth in an amazing and personal way.

What as t a read!

God is faithful always! No one could have endured the suffering Mr. Bae had and come home unscathed. Yet here he is still praising God and thanking and loving Him. That's the testimony of Lord's faithfulness and absolute keeper of His promises! Welcome home, Pastor Bae! Your love and compassion for the people of North Korea who live in total darkness, not knowing the love of Jesus, is inspiring to say the least. Thank you!

Great read from Ken's firsthand account of his ordeal in the DPRK, through the lens of his rock-solid Christian faith! This is a story of love for one's fellow man, even when they brand you a criminal terrorist and imprison you. An essential book for any person of any faith, or for those who wish to explore more about God and His plan for us in relation to one another. A blessing for any who read it's pages!

A deep faith and devotion to our God.

It was interesting to read what Mr. Bae endured during his captivity by North Korea. Also to understand how brainwashed the citizens are. I often have wondered how they could be so supportive of their leader. Bae's story made me realize that they see their leader as their god. They are continually bombarded with how great he is and how much he has done for them. This also includes previous generations of the leader's family. It's sad to know that they view America as such an enemy to their way of life. I was impressed with the dedication of Bae's devotion in his struggle to maintain his Christianity. During this time God used Bae's faith to evangelize by his actions to the guards and people he came in contact with. He did this in such a manner that they did not feel threatened but saw how Jesus practiced while here on earth.

A must read!!
BySue Barnardon November 24, 2016

This was one of the best books illustrating what faith and belief in God can do!! As soon as Bae started to pray, not for his release, but to make him an instrument to spread God's word, things started happening. Even some of the guards became curious as to how he could believe in a God that couldn't be seen. Also, they questioned how Bae could perform hard labor and still remain cheerful and even singing.

This is a great read, told in such a way that you ...
ByAbby Blackwellon September 1, 2016

This book is a real look at the North Korean government's use of Americans as pawns for their political goals. They sentence each American prisoner to (fill in the blank) years of hard labor and hold them until some high level US government official comes to North Korea to have the prisoner released. Mr. Bae was just such a pawn. He endured 2.5 years of hospital stays and labor camps all the while his family and plenty of others were lobbying for his release. This is a great read, told in such a way that you don't feel it is over-dramatized. Definitely worth a read.
