Water, Not Weapons The Greening of Afghanistan Through decades of combat in war-torn Afghanistan, a Japanese man has been waging a different battle, against the ravages of drought. Tetsu Nakamura is a 70 year-old physician. Beginning in 1991, he opened 3 clinics to provide medical service in the mountainous eastern region of the country. However, a historic drought that began in 2000 led to shortages of water and food, causing the deaths of many people. From the perspective of providing medical care, "One irrigation canal will do more good than 100 doctors!" He shed his physician's white coat and set out to build an irrigation canal. 16 years later, the plains have turned green again and local people have begun to return to farming with renewed security. He declares, "Weapons and tanks don't solve problems.

As a Japanese, i am ashamed of myself for not knowing what he has done, and not trying to do something for someone else but only thinking of myself. I have been such a selfish man. I'm from the Philippines and knew him from this documentary that I saw in NHK World 2 years ago. I notice my 2-year old instagram post about how this docu made me cry had been getting likes since 3 wks ago. I thought maybe the docu was aired again. Today I clicked on the hashtag and learned of his tragic death. My heart was crushed. I don't know him personally but I could help it, I cried so hard. 😭😭 so heartbreaking 💔💔

The USA government could learn a lot from this Japanese doctor. He deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. This would give recognition to his work and effort, and give insight to a better solution than dropping bombs.

The US government understand, but they are doing business their way. Afghanistan development is not part of their strategic objectives. And the other part, I also support your claim that Doctor Nakamura deserves a noble prize.

The Taliban was disturbing the US drugtrade, which is used to fund black ops projects by the alphabet agencies. One such operation that was blown wide open was Iron/Contra where the CIA was caught redhanded trading cocaine for weapons intended to arm rebels (terrorists in todays lingo). This shit never went away, they just got better at not getting caught. They could not give two shits about the people of afghanistan or what Taliban did or didnt do. They do not care. They care about the valuable drugtrade being disturbed. And not soon after the first "coalition" boots was on the ground, it was back up and running. So yeah solidiers burn a pile here and there for video footage but its as phoney as the dollar.

What Dr. Nakamura has done to improve the lives of thousands of Afghans in Nangahar province is an absolute miracle. He literally transformed the Gamberi desert into hectares of lush green trees and crops to feed over 600,000 people by constructing irrigation canals from the Kunar river into the desert. Even he had doubts on whether he can do it himself but with the assistance of hundreds of Afghans for about a decade of persistence, hard work and dedication, he made it happen. He constructed 3 clinics to provide medical assistance to thousands of poor Afghans. He also constructed a mosque that can accommodate 800 people and a madrassa good for about 600 people. He helped the Afghans simply because he wanted to save and improve the lives of the Afghan people and he said achieving peace was only a by product of his humanitarian intentions. It takes an extraordinary person to spend this much time and effort to help the poor living in such a desolate place. He was loved by Afghans for dedicating years of his life to their betterment, which is why it doesn't make sense why anyone would want him killed. Whoever is responsible should definitely be brought to justice. But let's just remember and appreciate the legacy of Dr Nakamura. He has definitely inspired me to do more to contribute to bettering humanity and changed my perspective in life. Dr. Nakamura has definitely created a long lasting impact in this world.

Dr Nakamura is alive and will live 1000s years. A good human being and a great person. The documentary is very inspirational and motivate me to become a better person. I watched this documentary with my students whose in 4th grade of elementary school. The documentary was really touching and my students cried watching the struggle of Mr. Nakamura`s in Afganisthan. What's so special about Dr. Nakamura is that he had a genuine respect and love towards the people and culture of the local Afghani people he helped. It was through that genuine respect of their culture that he empowered the locals to help themselves and that's what separates Japan from other countries that try to offer aid. Theyre not trying to impose their will or show that their ways are better. His helping hand came with humility and that's what I believe the USA could learn from the Japanese (I'm american btw)

As a Japanese, I want everyone not to blame particular nationalities of Dr. Nakamura's death in the current situation. It's true nothing is evident and everything is possible unless denied clearly. However, Dr. Nakamura have tried to make no enemies, as he clearly stated, and that's why he was able to do his work during the era of Taliban. Dr. Nakamura also said, "These projects should continue for 10, 20 or 30 years and more. I won't live for so long, so we should upbring successors to continue without me. This is the independence by true meaning." (I translated this from the interview broadcasted in Japan yesterday.) So, I think that Doctor's will is to continue and improve his projects with keeping peace and without unnecessary hates.

Dr Nakamura taught us that our greatest weapon is not tank or gun, that is, our motivation, skills, cooperation and determination change the world. Keep staying busy, and how we can apply our ability to help people rather than thinking hatred or gossips eventually brings peace of world.

I wish more people would know about this hero called Dr. Tetsu Nakamura. Afghan people will always be in your debt. Thank you so much!

I'm Brazilian and I really respect Mr.Nakamura way of life, helping others to help themselves , teaching and adapting to overcome difficulties. It's really immeasurable loss for Afghani people, I hope the killers of these 6 people get caught and pay for their crimes. This is unacceptable.

May Allah have mercy on his soul. Dr Nakamura was matyred whilst travelling. He gave hope, peace and livelihood to poor Afghans. He chose peace over war in his work to save lives and future generations and in doing so gave the ultimate sacrifice.
