A well written and nicely illustrated compilation of Miyazaki’ works. His quotes are the most interesting, many of which may catch the reader by surprise. Geniuses are not always the nicest people as you will see in this book:
Miyazaki states: “Films must also not be produced out of idle nervousness or boredom…or amplify vulgarity…I hate Disney’s works…They show nothing but contempt for the audience.” Understand he is including the “nine old men” in this attack. Nevertheless, that is why I like this book. It is honest and doesn’t pull punches.
I still love Miyazaki’s movies…just not him.

This is a beautiful book, put together for the first visiting exhibit at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, which just recently opened (2022). The exhibit was mesmerizing, and the museum is very interesting, showcasing film technique, a beautiful historical Magic Lanterns exhibit. This book's illustrations are lovely, but the original artwork at the museum was spectacular. The book is full of interesting photographs and information about Miyazaki's work. If you cannot see the exhibit in person, buy this book.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures selected Hayao Miyazaki as the subject of their inaugural temporary exhibit.
Unfortunately, I am far away from Los Angeles, so there is no way I can make my way to the museum. However, they published this beautiful book alongside the exhibit.
Alongside gorgeous art, the book contains essays that run through the history of Miyazaki's career, as well as a look into his creative process and philosophy. This book comes together quite nicely, giving the reader a clear picture of why Miyazaki's films resonate with audiences. The authors did their homework, and have a strong grasp of the filmmaker's themes and values.
The art, spanning across Miyazaki's entire filmography is presented in a non-chronological order. We see storyboards, image boards (concept art), layouts, background paintings, production cels, and even some keyframe animation. Unlike many of the "art-of" books for Ghibli films, there's a greater emphasis on image boards rather than production stills of the finished movie. These samples are process oriented, allowing the reader to see the thought that goes into making a film at Ghibli.
Highly recommended.

オープニング企画展『 HAYAO MIYAZAKI 』の図録です。
（米・ロサンゼルス、2021年9月30日開館）
キャプションなどは全て英文です。
宮崎監督作品のイメージボード、背景美術が主な掲載物で、
レイアウト、絵コンテ、原画、セル画などが少々、
その他、制作現場などの写真が数葉。
宮崎作品を横断的に満遍なく載せている為、良く見知った代表的な図版が多いでしょうか。
既出図版が多いとはいえ、当図録の見どころは、
全ての図版が紙の端までトリミングせずに載っている、
という部分にあります。
フレーム外にはみ出た筆の跡や、タップ穴の位置、指示書き、
さらにはセロハンテープ跡や、画鋲穴の跡、
紙のシワ、ヨレ、折れ、変色まで確認出来ますので、
そうそう、それが見たかったのよ！
何故、今まで見えなかったのか！
無修正こそ至高！
と仰る業の深い諸兄姉におかれましては、
実用的で価値ある物になると思います。
実際のところ、
イメージボードの余白にちょこっと描かれた絵(『the art～』では消されてたりする)
などが見れるのは嬉しいものです。
既出絵にも新たな価値が付与されることとなりました。
恐らく初出と思われる図版もいくつか散見されます。
参考になるか判りませんが、個人的に気になった初見図版は…
●Ａプロにて『長くつ下のピッピ』制作準備中、ソファに寝転ぶ高畑氏と
壁一面に貼られたイメージボードの前の宮崎氏が何やら談笑中の写真。
(手前にもう一人男性が立っており、高畑ｘ宮崎の関係性に嫉妬しているという解釈も可)
壁のイメージボードは超視認し辛いのですが、『幻の長くつ下のピッピ』
『宮崎駿イメージボード集』にも載っていない絵が貼ってあり、気になって夜も眠れません。
●「Hayao Miyazaki as a union activist」とキャプションの付いた宮崎青年のスナップ。
肩掛けの拡声器をマシンガンのように携え、組合員を率いて労働闘争に燃える男の雄姿…
のように見えますが、ホルスのロマンアルバムに同アングルの別写真が載っており、
そちらの説明では、東映動画の原動画スタッフ旅行で幹事を務めた時の写真、となっています。
(当時、労働組合の書記長を務めていたそうなのでunion activistも間違ってはいませんが)
ちなみに、未来の宮崎夫人がスタッフ達の中に写っているので、様々な妄想が可。
(『ナウシカ GUIDE BOOK』掲載の大塚康生さんによる回想も併せて妄想の種にされたし)
●『紅の豚』原画(C-80 A2～A7)―宮崎監督修正原画―作監まとめ原画。
●『もののけ姫』「kodama surround Ashitaka」とキャプションの付いたイメージボード。
(これは見たことないような気がします…。
『the art～』のカバーを外した裏表紙にも載ってませんでした)
…といった辺りでしょうか。
その他、背景美術、美術ボードにも初見のものが数枚ありました。
（関連書籍全てに照らし合わせた訳では御座いません。悪しからず）
図録の大きさは大体、タテ28.0cmｘヨコ23.5cmｘ厚さ3.0cm。
日本人感覚だと少し大型。
造本はドカッと武骨でズッシリ重い。
ガッチリ角張った上製本で、うっかり足の上に落とせば軽く昇天間違いなし。
カバーなど余計なものは無いという欧米らしい雑さ、いや大らかさもありますが、
表紙の文字は乳白玉虫色（どう表現したら良いのか）の箔押しで素晴らしい。
どうせなら背の文字も箔押しなら良かったのに。
鈴木プロデューサーの寄稿文が冒頭に掲載されており、
宮崎監督の視覚的記憶能力は天才的に凄いが、物忘れも凄いという話の合間に、
現在制作中の宮崎監督の新作『君たちはどう生きるか』の新情報が少しだけ載ってます(英文)。
同じく冒頭に、当企画展のキュレーターJESSICA NIEBELさんによる、
開催までの経緯などを記した文章があるのですが、
子供の頃に『アルプスの少女ハイジ』を見て感動した様子が、
とても生き生きと描写されていて微笑ましかったです。
子供の頃に感じたセンス・オブ・ワンダーを思い出し、
感動を分けて頂きましたので、最後に付け加えておきます。
