The trauma suffered by immigrant women as a result of war, sexual abuse, racial discrimination and cultural dislocation is a story we’ve heard before. But one particular story has gone largely untold. It’s about the lasting psychological wounds caused to Korean women by the U.S. government and its military during its occupation of Korea following World War II and during the Korean War. Host Sheryl McCarthy talks with author Grace Cho about her memoir "Tastes Like War", a 2021 National Book Award Finalist. It tells the story of her bright, talented and determined mother, and her valiant struggle to maintain her autonomy as a Korean woman and war bride brought to small town America. Grace Cho is Associate Professor of sociology and anthropology at CUNY College of Staten Island.
