Sophia Khalifa: My Life in Israel as an Arab Muslim | Stories of Us

"Israel gave me everything.” As an Arab Muslim growing up in Israel, Sophia witnessed firsthand the way non-Jews are treated: with respect, dignity, and full rights. Her life is proof that Arabs and Jews can live peacefully side by side. Why should everyday Americans care about the atrocities committed by Hamas? Sophia warns that if we turn a blind eye, the West will be next.

Israel gave me everything I'm the
product of peace between Jews and Arabs
and how Jews and Arabs can live
peacefully side by side together as
brothers and
sisters my name is Sophia Salma Khalifa
and this is my
story I'm a Muslim Arab growing up in
Israel I'm a mother of two and I have a
masters from Stanford University I was
born to a Muslim family in Israel my mom
is a single mom I have eight siblings my
dad has two wives um in parallel and my
mom decided she didn't want to live with
his wife in the same house and didn't
want to be in that Village and she went
and moved to uh naria this is the Jewish
town in northern Israel where she raised
us nine children uh on her own we were
supported by the welfare um in Israel by
the welfare system because otherwise my
mom would not be able to to provide
Israel is a very beautiful and strong
multiethnic
democracy around 20% of the population
are Arab Muslims like myself we also
have Christian Arabs we have
Drews the Arab citizens of Israel
receive equal rights they get welfare
they get education they get health care
they get all the rights the protection
anything that a Jewish citizen would get
[Music]
my Muslim teacher used to teach us
everything about the Jews who stole the
land he would be teaching us that we
would never be able to become anything
in this country because this is the
Jewish country and the Jewish people
would not allow you to become an
engineer they would not allow you to
become doctor you cannot be anything and
we will have to resist we would have to
fight we would have to do do everything
that we can to get the land back I
remember
leaving these classes feeling like I
don't have a
future but that really contradicted my
experience with the Jewish people that I
met because they were loving they were
kind I was their friend I would go to
their houses they didn't mind that I was
Arab they didn't see me as an Arab they
see me just as their friend so it didn't
let stand very well with me I was with
my girlfriend she was staring and I was
asking like what are you thinking about
and she said like you know I really wish
one day to become a suicide bomber I
really wish to become a Shahed one
[Music]
day that
moment really broke me to
pieces on the school break between 8th
grade and nth nth grade in the summer I
was discovered by a fashion photographer
that sounds really exciting I I I I
should try that but I knew that this is
a choice of no return I cannot step my
foot in the village if I'm a model I
travel to Europe for work and I spend a
lot of my time in Tel
Aviv my uncle my my mother's
brother he threatened to cut off my head
for dishonoring the
family and he obviously could not do
that because we live in Israel and
Israel protects women when he said that
to my mom she told him you won't even
touch a hair on her head I felt so
empowered by her and I wanted to send
this message to all the Arab girls that
you can be anything that you want you
can pursue any path that you
want
it's very important to note that Israel
pulled out of Gaza completely
unilaterally in
2005 they uprooted all the Jewish
citizens who used to live in
Gaza all of
them all of them were taken out
forcefully after 2005 there was no Jew
alive or dead and Gaza they even take
out the graves of the Jewish
people because they didn't know what is
going to happen to the graves and this
was a test case to see how a
self-governing Gaza would look like Gaza
is a very fertile land they had green
houses that they used to export flowers
to all of
Europe and the Hope in Israel was that
we're hoping that Gaza can become the
Singapore of the Middle East this tiny
country that has this very good economy
with all the green houses and they have
the most beautiful beaches uh in in the
region and they can go and fish they can
build we're going to help them in Tech
this is our path for peace days after
the
Jews you know left
Gaza Hamas went and burned out all the
green houses they burned everything to
the ground because this was the Jews
green houses
before if people care about Muslim lives
or any Palestinian
lives in Gaza you first and foremost
want to make
sure that their leadership cares about
them and Hamas is a sereine government
of Gaza it's a terror organ organization
that hijacked the Palestinian people for
their own religious cause of
transforming the Middle East and the
entire world into an Islamic State
Palestinians don't have the right to say
the truth they cannot openly speak about
the atrocities that Hamas is doing to
them if they speak against it they are
dead people keep saying if you're
calling Hamas a terror organization this
is islamophobia no this is not
islamophobia this is the fact I love
Muslim people that's I'm a Muslim my
family is Muslim and I'm still
condemning what Hamas
did why people cannot see the truth
about this situation a lot of these
people come from a reality that they
teach you from a very young age to hate
the Jews the Jews stole the lands to the
Palestinian the Jews are responsible for
all the atrocities in the world and we
just need to destroy them them so some
of the people are brainwashed and
they're sometimes blinded to their own
anti-Semitism they say I'm not
anti-semitic I'm anti-zionist now what
does that mean it's like saying I'm for
women but I don't think they should have
rights because Zionism mean that you
believe in the Jewish people right to
have a state where they're safe and free
from persecution right so how can you
stand for the
Jews and not wanting them to be able to
defend themselves and the other side I
think it's like a herd of sheep who are
just like following whatever sound good
to them and they think that Hamas is the
weak part Israel is strong and thus we
need to support the weak the weak could
be a terror
organization and they're not that weak
after after we saw what they were able
to do on October
7th the everyday American should care
about this because the West is going to
be next Israel is just the first some of
the countries the Arab countries or
let's take for example
Iran calls Israel the small devil and
America is a big
devil is this what we want to suppor in
this country I hear a lot of people
calling Israel an apide State maybe
let's start with explaining what is an
AP partide it's a
discrimination based on race Arabs in
Israel who constitute 20% of the Israeli
population they're equal citizens
they're getting all the rights from
Israel they have Education Health Care
welfare full rights full protection they
equal citizens for everything where is
the
apartheid I'm very proud in being Arab
I'm very proud about being Muslim but
all I needed as a child as a human being
to realize my full potential was give me
the security the safety the education
give me the opportunity Israel gave me
everything I'm the product of peace
between Jews and Arabs and how Jews and
Arabs can live peacefully side by side
together as brothers and sisters as an
Arab Muslim it's very important for me
to speak out about these topics to
support Israel you have to speak the
truth you have to stand with Justice I
know the truth people who didn't live in
Israel don't know the truth and we need
to fix
it thank you for watching this video to

As a sri lankan Christian I have to comment something. I worked in Israel for twelve years. Israel is high democracy country and the government rules also very good. If I mention something about apartheid in Israel all are same standard and there is many doctors are Muslim l know that very well because as my work usually l have to go hospital

"I am a product of peace between Jews and Arabs..."  that has to be the most powerful statement.  The product of peace,  this is what is possible without Hamas.  Her words not mine.  This interview should be mandatory to be shown around the world and to every college and university here in the United States.   Thank you to whomever posted this interview.

As a Lebanese refugee who is now an Israeli citizen, we were welcomed, supported financially, given rights and equal healthcare. They gave me home, friends, and a second family..
I owe this country my and my family's lives. It is thanks to this country's aid that my siblings and i have had good education and now good working places.
I work in a hospital, and the Arab patients are treated as equally as the Jewish population. The Arab doctors and nurses have the same respect and equal opportunities as the Jewish ones. We live in harmony and treat each other with respect and good manners.
We welcome our cultural and religion differences and enjoy it, we also invite each other over on holidays celebrations.

This is my story: I grew up in Israel as an Arab. The Israeli Govt offered my family and all Israeli Arabs everything from social services, health care, education including higher education, human rights and most importantly human dignity. Also, my family and I never felt discriminated against by any Jews. I had many Jewish friends, and I never once I know that there was any difference between us. As a matter of fact, members of my family who live in other Arab countries in the Middle East, wish to have the freedom and human rights that I experience in Israel. By the way, Many Muslim and Christian and Druze Arab serve in the IDF.

My daughter was born in Tel Aviv with TAPVC (heart was not connected to the single lung she had). About 30-40% of medical staff that saved her in Schneider cardiology were Arabs. Mostly all of them got their master degrees in Israeli universities and contributed back to the society. And they treated my daughter with love until full cure. During those hard days, I didn't notice any ethnical conflict among medical staff. People can live peacefully, unless... they are educated people.

I'm from this small beutiful town of Nahariyya, my parents recognized her and she made us proud for standing out against myths uninformed people believe about us 🙌🏻 This is Israel, as opposed to what many believe and actually experience and project upon us 💯 Nevertheless, our army consists of all races, who grew up learning at school and loving life and human kind, before enlisting at 18. So, we're not an army that kills children and destroy buildings for fun, but 3 generations who currently fight for freedom, the way we did since the 1920s, whether we came from Africa and arab countries, from Europe or from the Far East 🇮🇱️️️ AM ISRAEL CHAI AND BLESS ALL PEOPLE ️

God bless Sophia Khalifa. Im half Jewish by my Dad's side of the family, but I was raised Christian by my mom's half of the family. I recently lost what I thought were several lifelong friends once the war started, because these friends started attacking me literally just because they knew I was part Jewish. I never even said anything about the war to these friends. Literally, just because they knew who I was, they attacked me and told other people that I was Jewish like it was some kind of evil label that people had to know about me. I have never judged a single person in my life for who they were, and I've had friends of all ethnicities, including very close arabic friends as well. I dont care where people are from or their ethnicity, I see people as people. My family raised me to know what happened in the holocaust and to never judge or hate anyone simply for how they were born or their religious beliefs. Ive been incredibly depressed lately after the attacks that Ive had on my character and for how I was born, simply because half of my family is Jewish. I dont even have much family anymore, so now Im just alone. You would think that people would learn from history. I blame the communists for the continued flaming of race wars and division. I hope one day soon there will be peace forever.

I’m a Pakistani Muslim. I have great respect for Israel and a big love for my Jewish friends. My closest mentors and friends are Jews. Israel choices are hard in that region where Muslims too are up against political Islamic militants. We need more Muslim voices to also resonate with the cry of “ not in our name “. If we can reform Islam , we can put an end to misogyny and militancy. It’s a great religion in the hands of small people. I hope the hostages are returned asap. Thankyou for sharing your inspiring story of love.

I pray that after this war ends all those who love can contribute full on to a Gaza territory repopulated rebuilt revived reborn for children to run and play on the beach and people celebrating peace together. It can happen. If we want it. With beautiful hearts like hers and so many others. I have seen and heard them. They are everywhere.

Sophie thank you for your inspiring and courageous story. Your mother was a very brave woman to stand up for her rights and raising and educating her nine children on her own.
She gave all her children the freedom and opportunities to be whatever life path they chose.
And look at you, a beautiful educated and articulate woman passionate about telling a swath of society in denial (worldwide) the inconvenient truth.
Sophie, you have my respect and admiration.
Once again thank you .

I am a Russian Jew and have lived in Israel since I was 13. My friends are: Arabs, Bedouins, Ethiopians, Russians, Ukrainians, Moroccans, and so on. In Israel we dont care where your roots are, what religion you have, or what color you are. It really doesn't matter. The only thing matters is what kind of person you are, good or bad. That's how our world should look, but it never will ☹

From Africa, 🙋🏾‍♀️Namibia, I really love your story. Thanks a lot for sharing with us. South Africa, don't you 👀see the problems in your own country??? The corrugated iron settlements in Soweto and many other townships, districts and suburbs. Houses are still made from discarded or stolen building materials such as corrugated iron, cardboard and foil. The high unemployment over 70%. The lack of school education and lack of teaching materials.  The strong illiteracy. The growing crime and increasing from year to year, that the police and the city administration has long lost the fight against crime.  And this catastrophic situation prevails in the country, which is advocate of the Hamas gang of murderers .  What kind of government is this - Hamas ️? That's unwise ️.

Ive heard of the belly aching from Black Americans that, even wealthy Blacks, speaks so poorly about America. Other cultures have seized on this with pure ignorance or stupidity & mindlessness. The intentional destruction of our education system is a huge yet tiny effort to devide America. It's so bad that I sometimes cry or tear up when I see & hear Blacks that love this country. I'm going through this with this woman. It's like finding water in the desert when I've thirsted for decades. I always want to hug people who have had the strength, intelligence, & discernment to see reality. Thank your Prager U. for posting such a beautiful, fair & clear minded woman. I grew up with hatred from Blacks & Whites, yet if I held a grudge or negativity, I held it only for the person who harmed me, not everyone or anyone else.

But, the strength behind you,  your mother is clearly an exceptional human being. Living in an environment of intimidation in the name of religion, what she did for her children is a story that needs to be told to generations. Why would she not be given a Nobel prize? Just because she isn't a public figure?
What a woman.

Here’s a nuanced look at your questions regarding the video by PragerU (and the testimony of Sophia Salma Khalifa), first in English, then in Korean.

English version

1. Is her statement genuine and heartfelt?

  • The video presents Sophia Khalifa telling her own life story: as an Arab Muslim born and raised in Israel, describing positive personal experiences of welfare support, social mobility, and cross-community friendships. prageru.com+1

  • Because it is a first-person account (rather than an anonymous or purely statistical one), it has an element of authenticity: it reflects one person’s lived experience.

  • At the same time, one must recognise that a single individual’s experience cannot stand for all the relevant structural issues: discrimination in employment, land access, legal/administrative inequalities, etc. Critics point out that some of the broader claims made in the video and by PragerU’s Israel-series omit or downplay those counter-vailing realities. Rethinking Schools+1

  • Therefore: Yes, it seems likely that her personal story is sincerely told and heartfelt. But the framing of her story is embedded within a strongly pro-Israel narrative context, and that framing means the choice of what to emphasise or omit is selective.

2. Is this channel pro-Israel? Are there videos that are not pro-Israel?

  • Yes: PragerU is clearly pro-Israel in its content orientation. For example it offers a series called “Israel / Middle East 101” under the tagline “Get the facts about Israel … without the bias or spin.” prageru.com+1

  • On SourceWatch and other evaluative sites it is noted that PragerU “contains many pro-Israel videos” including titles like “Why Don’t You Support Israel?”, “BDS: the Attempt to Strangle Israel”. sourcewatch.org

  • Are there videos that are not pro-Israel? Probably yes in the sense that PragerU covers many topics (economics, culture, U.S. politics, social issues) from a conservative viewpoint, so not everything is about Israel. But in regard to its Israel/Palestine coverage, the orientation is clearly supportive of Israel’s positions.

  • In short: the channel is ideologically conservative, pro-American (according to its own description) and explicitly pro-Israel in its Middle East / Israel-Palestine content.

3. How is it funded?

  • PragerU is a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit media/advocacy organisation. Wikipedia+1

  • Its funding comes from donations, foundations, and major donors. For example: the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation gave grants to it. sourcewatch.org+1 Another foundation: Prometheus Foundation has listed PragerU as a grantee. Prometheus Foundation

  • PragerU’s own site emphasises “100% Donor Funded”. prageru.com

  • Because of its ideological alignment (conservative, pro-free market, pro-American, pro-Israel) its donor base tends to be from aligned philanthropic foundations and individuals rather than neutral/traditional academic funding.

  • One specific link: PragerU’s video “The Middle East Problem” acknowledges sponsorship by the Adam and Gila Milstein Family Foundation. prageru.com

Summary judgement

  • Sophia Khalifa’s personal testimony appears genuine as an individual’s story. However, because it is used in a media piece produced by PragerU, which has a clear ideological orientation, one should treat it as part of a curated narrative rather than unmediated “raw truth” about all Arab Muslims in Israel or about the Israel-Palestine conflict in full complexity.

  • The channel (PragerU) is explicitly pro-Israel in its Middle East content, along with a broader conservative U.S. domestic agenda.

  • Its funding comes from conservative donors/foundations; this means the channel’s agenda and framing are likely influenced (even if indirectly) by its funder-base and audience.

  • If you are looking for a more balanced set of perspectives, it may be wise to compare this video with other testimonies and analyses from Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel, Palestinian refugees, independent journalists, and human rights organisations.

Rethinking Schools+1

  • 또한 SourceWatch 등의 평가에서도 “PragerU contains many pro-Israel videos …” 라는 언급이 있습니다. sourcewatch.org

Wikipedia+1

Prometheus Foundation

Are there any comments that are critical of the content?
ChatGPT의 말:

Yes — there are critical responses to the video and the channel. Here are some examples and observations (in English first, then Korean), with caveats about sourcing because comment-threads are large and diffuse.

🔍 Some sample criticisms

  • On the discussion forum Free Republic, one user writing about the video “PragerU: ‘Sophia Khalifa: My Life in Israel as an Arab Muslim’ said:

“She should convert to Christianity.” freerepublic.com
“They remained muslim but lived off the welfare of the Jewish state … while people they allow to represent them are wishing to kill every Jewish person on earth …” freerepublic.com

These comments are clearly critical — albeit rooted in broader ideological judgments and emotional positions rather than a purely academic/civil critique.

  • In more analytic form, a critique published by Rethinking Schools argues that PragerU’s “Israel / Middle East” series (of which this video is part) engages in historical distortions and erasure of Palestinian history:

“… the claims such as: ‘it was never anything other than a sovereign Jewish state’ … epitomize the blatant distortions and historical erasure …” Rethinking Schools

While that article does not exclusively review this exact video of Sophia Khalifa, it places it within a larger body of content from PragerU that is being critiqued for selective framing.

  • On media-bias evaluation, Media Bias/Fact Check rates PragerU as “Questionable” citing extreme right-wing bias, tendency for propaganda, and use of poor sources. mediabiasfactcheck.com

✅ What this shows

  • Yes — the video and channel do receive critical commentary from both casual viewers and media/education analysts.

  • The criticism mostly centres on:

    • Selective presentation of facts / omission of counter-examples or structural issues (e.g., about Arab citizens of Israel, Palestinian experience).

    • The framing of the channel as “educational” while critics say it functions as ideological advocacy.

    • The broad narrative of the channel (and this video) aligning with a pro-Israel, conservative U.S. viewpoint and thus not necessarily presenting balanced “both sides” perspectives.

  • The sampled comment threads also show hostile or polarised responses (often not in a civil analytical mode) which is common in politically charged conflict-content.

  • The studiesshow that in YouTube commentary on Israel/Palestine conflicts there tends to be high incidence of strong sentiment, and often polarisation. arxiv.org+1

Rethinking Schools

If you like, I can scan and extract specific YouTube comments (with time-stamps) that express critique of the video, and categorise them by tone (analytical vs. emotional). Would you like me to do that?

ChatGPT의 말:

Sophia Khalifa’s testimony in the PragerU video presents a very positive and individualistic portrayal of life as an Arab Muslim in Israel — focusing on personal safety, social mobility, and protection under Israeli law. The Wikipedia article “Arab citizens of Israel” paints a much more complex and uneven picture, highlighting both legal equality and persistent systemic discrimination.

Here’s a comparative analysis:

1. Legal Rights and Citizenship

  • Sophia’s account:
She says Arab citizens have the same rights as Jewish citizens, are protected by Israeli law, and can freely pursue education and careers.

  • Wikipedia article:
Confirms that Israel’s Basic Laws and the Declaration of Independence guarantee equality regardless of religion, race, or sex.
However, it also notes that many Arab citizens feel treated as “second-class citizens” due to Israel’s definition as a Jewish state and institutional biases in areas like land ownership and public funding.

Both acknowledge equal rights in law,
⚠️ but the article emphasizes a gap between legal equality and actual practice.

2. Discrimination and Inequality

  • Sophia’s account:
She portrays Israel as a tolerant, opportunity-rich society that treats its Arab citizens fairly, contrasting this with Hamas’ repression.

  • Wikipedia article:
    Provides extensive documentation of discrimination:

    • The U.S. State Department (2004) and the Or Commission concluded that the government’s treatment of Arab citizens was “neglectful and discriminatory,” causing poverty, unemployment, poor education, and infrastructure deficits.

    • Arab citizens received less funding for education (Jewish students get about 3× more funds).

    • Land ownership and housing remain highly unequal: 94% of land is administered by the state or the Jewish National Fund, which has historically favored Jewish settlement.

Sophia highlights opportunity and protection,
⚠️ but the article shows enduring structural inequality.

3. Education and Employment

  • Sophia’s account:
She emphasizes Israel’s education and welfare system as empowering for Arab citizens, especially women.

  • Wikipedia article:
Notes that Arab education has improved — particularly among Christian Arabs and Druze, who now show high rates of academic success — but also records decades of systemic underfunding, cultural bias in tests, and higher unemployment among Arab women (only 17% employed in 2005).
Wage gaps remain: Arab workers earn 29% less than Jewish workers.

Education and women’s progress are genuine trends,
⚠️ but they coexist with economic inequality and labor-market discrimination.

4. Economic Status and Development Programs

  • Sophia’s account:
She sees her welfare support as proof that Israel cares for all citizens.

  • Wikipedia article:
Confirms government development efforts: e.g., a five-year $216 million plan (2010) to improve Arab employment, particularly for women and academics.
Yet, as of 2007, 53% of impoverished Israeli families were Arab.

Welfare programs exist,
⚠️ but disparities remain deep.

5. Social Integration and Perception

  • Sophia’s account:
She describes positive coexistence and mutual respect, saying most Israelis are kind and tolerant.

  • Wikipedia article:
Notes both coexistence and deep tensions. Polls show mutual discomfort with intermarriage (over 80% of Jews and Arabs disapprove), and Arab citizens often report being seen as disloyal, particularly during wartime or political crises.

Coexistence and interdependence are real,
⚠️ but social distance and mistrust persist.

🧭 Balanced Interpretation

  • Sophia’s testimony reflects an individual success story — a woman who benefited from Israel’s legal protections and educational access.

  • The Wikipedia article documents a structural reality — that despite progress and isolated success stories, Arab citizens of Israel still face systemic disadvantages in land policy, education, public spending, and representation.

In short:

Sophia’s experience is authentic but exceptional;
the general condition of Arab citizens is legally equal but socially and economically unequal.

(Korean Summary)

What would be the chance of successful One State Soulution?
ChatGPT의 말:

Here’s a measured assessment of the chance of a successful One‑State Solution for the State of Israel–Palestinian Territories conflict, including key obstacles and conditions. (I offer this in both English and Korean as you requested.)

English version

Probability estimate and why

  • Based on current analyses, the one-state solution appears very difficult to implement successfully—many experts regard its chances as low rather than moderate or high. For example, while there is some growing discussion of it, one recent analysis states: “I consider a one-state solution in any of its variants to be delusional.” American University+2INSS+2

  • Polling data also suggest limited popular support. One survey finds around 20‐23 % support among Palestinians and Israeli Jews for a democratic equal‐rights one‐state solution. newint.org+2pcpsr.org+2

  • A key report by the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) examined multiple one‐state models and concluded that in almost all of them the combination of preserving both a Jewish state and full equality for Palestinians is extremely challenging; the structural contradictions are large. INSS+1

  • Thus: while it is not impossible, the likelihood of a one‐state model being adopted and functioning stably (with equal rights, democratic governance, mutual acceptance) appears quite low in the near‐ to mid‐term.

Major obstacles

  • Identity/national goals: The founding principle of Israel as a “Jewish state” under the ideology of Zionism is widely held among Israeli Jews. A genuine one‐state model with full parity would undermine that particular identity project. American University+1

  • Mutual distrust and contested narratives: Decades of conflict have built deep suspicions. Implementing a shared citizenship model demands trust, reconciliation, and institutional frameworks which simply do not exist at scale. palestine-studies.org+1

  • Political power dynamics: Who holds power and how rights are safeguarded is contested. Some models foresee Palestinians becoming the majority and Israeli Jews a minority; many Israelis regard this as unacceptable.

  • Implementation complexity: Questions of territory, residency, refugee return, security, economy, social services are all intertwined. The INSS memorandum outlines how many one‐state variants still leave unresolved issues about settlement status, the Gaza Strip, autonomy vs full integration, etc. INSS

  • Low current support & international norms: As noted, popular support is limited; many international actors still emphasise two‐state models. e-ir.info+1

Conditions that could increase chances

  • A dramatic shift in both Israeli and Palestinian public opinion toward accepting a unitary state with equal rights for all.

  • A credible transitional framework, possibly with strong international guarantees, security arrangements, and reconciliation mechanisms.

  • A collapse or abandonment of the two‐state framework in favour of a clear, feasible one‐state plan that both sides buy into.

  • Bodies of civil society, diaspora communities, and international actors aligning and supporting the one‐state vision with resources and safeguards.

Short summary
In short, the chance of a successful one‐state solution achieving its ideal form (equal rights, integrated shared society) is low given current politics, identity commitments, structural barriers, and limited support. It remains a theoretical possibility but not a near‐term likely outcome under prevailing conditions.

American University+1

INSS+1

American University+1

INSS
