Chris Hedges:
“I spent an excruciating 20 minutes on a radio program on the ABC. The hectoring and pedantic host, David Marr, amply demonstrated the moral and intellectual bankruptcy of establishment media.”

Just on that point of the independence
of media and mainstream media a few
weeks ago, we reported on how the pulit
surprise winning journalist Chris Hedges
had his national press club speech
cancelled by the club and he ended up
doing his speech that he was going to
present to the national press club at
different venues in Melbourne and Sydney
this week. And after listening to his
speech, and it's available through
consortium news as well online, and you
can easily find it if you do a search
for it. But after listening to the
speech, you can see why a cowardly and
compromised national press club would
have cancelled his speech. His his words
weren't polite or convenient. He's
provided a direct shaming of the
journalists who have spent years just
repeating Israel government talking
points. and all of these journalists
that have ignored the genocide in Gaza
over the past two years. And Chris
Hedges in his speech, he wasn't talking
just about the failure of the media. He
exposed the complicity of Western
governments in the genocide itself. So
I accept that it wasn't going to be easy
for them to listen to all of this, but
it should have been listened to anyway.
And also during the week, Chris Hedges
also appeared on Late Night Live with
David Maher on the ABC. And for some
unknown reason, well, we probably
speculate and we do know the reasons
why, but the conversation quickly turned
into a hatchet job. And instead of
engaging with the decades of war
reporting and moral authority that Chris
Hedges does bring to the table, David
Mah just tried to pull him apart. And
here's a few examples of that late night
live presentation.
What evidence did you have that Israel
had been invited or would be invited to
speak? Israel's ambassador.
That was a source at it wasn't to
replace me. I never said that.
No.
But according to a source within the
press club, they had reached out.
That's absolutely denied by the press
club.
Well, it's the press club also denied
that that it was confirmed that I would
speak. They also denied that uh they had
posted anything on their website uh
announcing my talk. And both of those
were lies because we I have the
confirmation letter. So we actually have
the physical evidence. They press club
denies that
well they were very dishonest. I mean
and I think they kind of shredded their
credibility.
But how's your credibility because they
absolutely deny the Israel ambassador
invitation. Absolutely. So, the double
tap operation and five of the people
killed were journalists. And the IDF,
the Israeli Defense Forces, put out a
line that they that their real target
was a camera on top of the building.
They called it a Hamas camera.
That's right. A Hamas camera. And you
site a number of headlines as evidence
of betrayal by the um by the big news
agencies. You cite Reuters and you cite
the headline, "Initial inquiry says
Hamas camera was target of Israel strike
that killed journalists." Two days
later, Reuters clearly reported that the
supposed Hamas camera was probably a
camera of theirs, a a Reuters cameraman.
Well,
so so they had not they did not accept
the IDF line. They questioned it.
Come on. You're a journalist and so am
I. and and you know very well that the
initial report is the one that carries.
But let's stick to your examples because
they are the ones you cite in your
argument.
Well, but those that you just that's
that's just the point. The initial
report was it was a Hamas camera. Then
two days later Reuters changed the
story. No, the initial report is IDF
says now whether we like it or not as
journalists, we have to report the
excuses made by outfits like the IDF,
don't we? We have to we have to report
their explanations. That's our job.
No, our job is to report the truth.
Now, I'm sure the Zionist lobby in
Australia would have been very proud of
that effort, but it was one of the worst
examples of establishment media
attacking someone for daring to hold
power to account. And if Chris Hedges
had talked about any other issue that
he's been involved in in El Salvador, in
Central America or in Iraq or in Bosnia,
former Yugoslavia, or any other issue at
all about his involvement in the peace
movement, I'm pretty sure it would have
been a case of, "Oh, yes, Chris, that's
really terrible what's happened in those
places. Please do go on and tell us more
about it because we do need to hear more
about all of this stuff that you're
talking about." But because he was
talking about Israel and their
absolutely evil actions and genocide in
Gaza and also the complicity of Western
governments in all of this, the ABC and
David Maher decided that it was best to
do a hatchet job on the guy who's trying
to do his best to make sure that the
truth that we do need to hear about does
get out. And they just wanted to silence
him and cut him

It has come to a sorry state when  a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist whose outstanding reputation goes before him is treated like this. There is very little intellectualism in Australia. It is heartening to see in the comments that some Australians have a brain because most of them haven’t

It is not a journalist's role to repeat the claims of proven liars, and the ABC's continuous stream of 'Israel says' and 'Israel denies' reports function as propaganda to frame Israel's genocide as legitimate 'self defence'.
The ABC is a sickening disgrace.

Chris Hedges' credibility is 100%, 24 carat, gold-plated, worldwide for decades. I doubt anyone outside of Australia has ever heard of the Marr character and most of them will despise him...he has no right to call himself a journalist. He regurgitates press releases as news. He could easily be replaced by a bottom-end AI bot, if that's not what it is.

I have caught the ABC out lying on several occasions when reporting on Russia and Israel. Barefaced lying when the film behind the story was contradicting what they were saying. One example was a report that Russian troops were shooting Ukrainian people protesting. The film behind showed a small group of people with placards just standing around with one Russian soldier doing nothing. There have been many instances of this blatant lying. The ABC like the BBC is no longer a credible source.

Then Latouff court case proved who runs the ABC, and nothing has changed.

DISGUSTING that Marr is running the 'Press Club denies' line, when EVERY institution that has folded to the lobbyists have lied about their reasoning.  And when he knows perfectly well the official line is often exposed by sources who can't be named for fear of.... losing their jobs.

In cases where denials have been investigated, such as Lattouf, the truth is revealed.  Marr is functioning as a lie generator.

Thanks for this coverage of the appalling interview on LNL. I have previously had high respect for David Marr. After listening to his interview of Chris Hedges, where it seemed his main purpose was to question Hedges’ credibility and integrity, I actually now can’t believe in David Marr’s own credibility. On his defending of Western Media and the National Press Club, and his incredulity at Hedges’ arguments about them, I think David Marr sounded delusional! And I wondered if he has ever watched or listened to any international alternative news media or commentary on what has actually been happening in Gaza! Or has he just stuck to legacy media, which does not acknowledge or report the truth much at all these days?!
I suggest David Marr starts with the Chris Hedges Report.

David Ewan Marr FAHA (born 13 July 1947) is an Australian journalist, author, and political and social commentator. His writes about the law, Australian politics, censorship, the media, and the arts. He writes for The Monthly and Guardian Australia. Marr hosts Late Night Live on ABC's Radio National.

Early life and education

David Ewan Marr[1] was born on 13 July 1947.[2]

He attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School in Sydney's Lower North Shore[2] and subsequently graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts in 1968 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1971.[3][4][1] While at university, he was a resident of St Paul's College.[5]

Career

Marr worked for a time as an articled clerk at the law firm Allen, Allen and Hemsley, and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor before turning to journalism.[6]

He began as a journalist working for The Bulletin magazine and The National Times newspaper in 1972 before being appointed editor in 1980.[3] During this period, he oversaw publication of the articles by Sydney journalist and author David Hickie, which detailed long-suppressed allegations of corruption against former New South Wales premier Robert Askin. The first article, headlined "Askin: friend of organised crime", was famously published on the day of Askin's funeral in 1981.[7]

In 1980 Marr published his first book, Barwick, a hostile biography of Chief Justice Sir Garfield Barwick. It won the NSW Premier's Literary Award for Non-Fiction,[8] but was received poorly by its subject, who accused the author of fabricating quotes.[9]

Marr was a reporter on the ABC TV program Four Corners (1985, 1990–91), a role in which he won a Walkley Award, and presenter of Radio National's Arts Today program (1994–1996). From 2002 to 2004, he hosted the ABC TV program Media Watch.[3] He was a frequent guest on ABC TV's Insiders program. During his term as presenter of Media Watch he played a key role in exposing the ongoing cash for comment affair, which Media Watch had first raised in 1999, concerning radio commentators Alan Jones and John Laws. In 2004 the program's exposé of Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) head David Flint – who had written letters of support to Jones at a time when Jones was being investigated by the ABA – played a significant role in forcing Flint's resignation.[10]

In 2002 Marr stated on Media Watch that conservative newspaper columnist Janet Albrechtsen had misquoted a French psychiatrist, Jean-Jacques Rassial [fr], and claimed that she had done this deliberately to make it look as though violence and gang rape were institutionalised elements of the culture of Muslim youths.[11] Albrechtsen did not deny the misquote, but responded by accusing Media Watch of inherent left-wing bias and of deliberately leading a witch-hunt against contrary views. When the Minister for Communications, Senator Helen Coonan, appointed Albrechtsen to the board of the ABC in February 2005, Marr publicly questioned whether she was qualified for such a position in light of what he described as "breaches of proper conduct as a commentator and as a journalist".[12]

In 2008 Marr was named by Same Same as one of the 25 most influential gay and lesbian Australians for his coverage of the Bill Henson case.[13][14]

Marr has advocated drug-law reform and has written candidly about his life experiences: "I've had a lot of fun on drugs ... I've had a lot of marvellous experiences. I've danced a lot. I've had a great time. I'm not ashamed of it. And I don't see what's wrong with it."[15]

Marr resigned from The Sydney Morning Herald on 13 July 2012, saying "People underestimate what a deeply conventional person I am. I'm turning 65 and that feels like the right time to go."[16] However, in April 2013, Marr joined Guardian Australia.[17][18]

In 2013 Marr penned the essay (later expanded to a book) The Prince: Faith, Abuse and George Pell about Cardinal Pell's dealing with sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.[19] In 2020 Marr appeared in episode 3 of ABC's series Revelation.[20]

Marr appeared as a semi-regular panellist on the ABC television programs Q&A and Insiders until 2020.[21]

In May 2024 it was announced that Marr will replace Phillip Adams as host of ABC Radio National's Late Night Live after Adams’ last show on 27 June 2024.[22]
