Gideon Levy is an award winning Israeli journalist who brings to light the injustices faced by the Palestinian people. Dutch journalist Bram Vermeulen spoke with Gideon Levy a few weeks before the ceasefire. They discuss the destruction of Gaza, recognition of Palestine by European countries, and the ways in which the genocide is denied through daily life in Tel Aviv - where people in the streets can hear the bombs but choose to ignore them.
In the VPRO series Frontlinie, Bram Vermeulen delivers in-depth foreign journalism. Subscribe to the Frontlinie newsletter and receive extra stories, background information and reading, viewing, and listening tips in your inbox every two weeks: https://www.vpro.nl/frontlinie (in Dutch.)

I'm Israeli like any other one and I
carry all the responsibility like any
other Israeli. There is no Palestinian
state and unfortunately I think there
will never be one. Israel in it is in
its worst condition ever go.
Actually, all the Israelis we spoke to
this week um are 100% behind the actions
of Israel inside Gaza. And they are even
saying that the images coming out of
Gaza are fake news.
That's a typical product of a very
efficient brainwash system
that the Israelis are unfortunately
exposed to. They choose it.
The media chooses not to tell Israelis
what's going on in Gaza. And the
Israelis are very happy about it. They
don't want to know. And instead, we are
still all of us on the 7th of October
with all the atrocities and crimes which
were horrible and the hostages which is
also a horrible scene. But what about
2.3 million people who are dying in
starvation, who are killed in dozens
every day systematically.
What about making Gaza an unlivable
place on a systematic basis? Every day.
Every day. Another neighborhood, another
village, another quarter. Yeah.
So, is that proof of that um the
citizens of this country are in complete
denial
or or does everyone know what is going
on?
Israel is in denial for many years
because they deny also the occupation.
For them, the occupation is a normal
phenomena. The fact that 5 million
people have no rights for them, for most
of the Israelis, it's normality.
not to speak about it that it is
legitimate.
And now the 7th of October also gave
them much more power to deny because all
of a sudden we are the victims. They are
comparing it to the Holocaust. They say
it's the second catastrophe after the
Holocaust as if it's comparable at all.
Right. But are you saying that Israel
has actually always been like that or
the 7th of October has radicalized?
Israel has both both are true. Israel
always lived in denial. By the way, ever
since it was born, ever since the first
lie about a people without a land which
arrives to a land without a people. This
was the first denial of Zionism. But it
lives in a denial. After the 7th of
October, we came out of the closet. Now
the deny is much deeper and also the
legitimacy to commit crimes is much
bigger because look what they have done
to us. So now we have the right to do
whatever we want.
Uh big countries like France, the UK,
Canada, Australia are now recognizing
the Palestinian state. Do you feel that
this is going to force the Israeli
government to change their course?
Even not for a second. It is a hollow
lip service. I've been yesterday to the
West Bank on the day of the declaration.
What do you think changed there? There
is no Palestinian state and
unfortunately I think there will never
be one because the only state which
counts for this is Israel and Israel
will never recognize a real viable
Palestinian state.
And those recognitions in the UN and the
initiative of France and others very
impressive but it is a hollow lip
service to show your public opinions
that you are doing something for Gaza.
It will not stop the war. It will not
promote a Palestinian state. We are
farer than ever from a Palestinian
state.
So who is this recognition for?
For their own public opinions, for their
own consciousness, for their own moral
thinking. Here we do something. There is
a genocide and here we do something. We
just don't sit and do nothing. We are
doing something. Nothing more than this.
Can you show on the map what is actually
left of the Palestinian state as it was
envisioned?
First of all, the Palestinian state was
the entire land
until 48. There was the the plan of of
dividing the land and the Palestinians
said no. You have to remember this.
Israel said yes. Yes. You can see it
maybe in my book. And what is left, what
is totally left is 25 around 25% of the
original Palestine. And now Israel is
not ready even over the 25. We want them
to compromise not over the whole land.
We want them to compromise over the 25%.
Even this we are not ready.
And there will be never a Palestinian
state here because in these 25% which
are left, namely the West Bank and Gaza.
But in the West Bank, there are 700,000
settlers. Who is going to evacuate them?
They are part of them very violent
people. It will be impossible that they
will live under Palestinian authority.
And if they are not evacuated, you don't
have a Palestinian state. We have to
change the discourse. We have to realize
that the Palestinian state is a train
that left the station and not continue
to talk about it while knowing that it
will never happen.
just talk about that do or what can they
do at this stage? What would be more
effective?
Just ask yourself what did you do
especially your country but others what
did you do visav the first apartite
state namely South Africa it was working
so well
after my visits in South Africa they all
say that the real changing the game
changer was when the commercial
community the business community came to
the prime minister and to the government
and said we cannot take it anymore this
boycott kills us we cannot take it
anymore.
So economic sanctions, that's
any kind of things which will make
Israelis accountable for the crimes. It
is impossible that we will continue to
commit a genocide and life in Tel Aviv
will be the same like it was before.
This is not normal. The fact that
restaurants and cafes are here so
overpacked is not normal. When one hour
drive from here people are massacred.
So we have to start to pay for it and to
be punished for it. And maybe this will
make the Israelis think about it.
The Netherlands is a big investor in in
Israel.
So what should the government do?
Exactly what he did with South Africa.
Exactly the same. If you want really to
influence, if you want just to pay lip
service, recognize Palestine, condemn
Israel, you might even call the
ambassador back to Amsterdam.
This will not affect Israel. What if
they don't do anything? What will be the
consequence of of the reputation
of the European Union?
I don't think it's about with all due
respect, the reputation of Europe
doesn't interest me. What will be is
that Gaza will be totally ethnic
cleansed. There will be no Palestinians
living in Gaza. I don't know where will
they send them. Part of them will be
killed. Part of them will be expelled.
And there will be this
bonanza that they talk about, the
Riviera that Donald Trump talks about,
which will never happen. There will be
this Riviera in Gaza and people will
make money out of Gaza and 2.3 million
people will starve somewhere else.
Yeah. You have been a very outspoken
critic to this government. You write
this in columns in in your book also.
You you actually wrote that the seven of
October attack was the result of the
arrogance of Israel.
Yeah.
What happens if you write these things?
I mean socially where you live, your
friends, your family.
For sure. It was the hardest two years
in my life. I I write those things for
many years, but I was never so lonely.
you become more alien al alienated
because by the end of the day those
young people they see in the streets who
come from Gaza they all committed crimes
there all of them committed crimes there
it's not very pleasant to be in a place
where you know that you are surrounded
by parents and friends and cousins and I
don't know what who who committed those
crimes on a daily basis
I told an Israeli colleague of ours that
I was going to interview you and he said
why is the international press always
going to Gideon Levy because he's such a
minority voice actually in Israel
I used to appear very often on Israeli
TV I participate in a panel twice three
times a week in prime time ever since
the war started I was twice on Israeli
TV I'm on all the outlets in the world
except of Israeli TV nothing
you feel the isolation.
Can Israel come back from this from
everything that we're seeing now?
The truth is that I would love to say
that yes, that tomorrow will be a new
day and we'll have a better government
and everything will solve. I don't see
how we are getting out of this. I don't
see how it's in many ways irreversible.
the damages to the society, the damages
to Israel's democracy, the democracy for
the Jews, the damages for Israel's image
in the world, the damage for so many
fields is irreversible. Even if
Netanyahu will go and he will go
apparently one day,
all the alternative candidates, they all
support the war, they all support the
genocide, they all support the ethnic
cleansing, they all support the aparta,
they all support the occupation, even
not one of them was in even in favor of
the recognition of Europe in the
Palestinian state. None of the
opposition leaders, no one was in favor
of this step, which is just a symbolic
step. Yeah. So, do you really think that
Israel will be saved by a different
alternative government?
I have my doubts.
Has the government of Prime Minister
Netanyahu actually made Israel safer
with all of this?
You must be joking. I guess Israel in
its is in its worst condition ever.
Israelis are afraid to go abroad either
because they are afraid or because they
are ashamed. It's very unpleasant and
maybe dangerous to be an Israeli abroad
today. It's very dangerous to be a Jew
in Israel. It's the most dangerous place
for Jews in the world today. No doubt
about it. Most of the Jews who were were
killed in the last two years were here
obviously and will continue to be here.
Sirens are still from time to time
sending us to the shelter in the middle
of the night. What do you mean safer?
Well, if that's true, why is he still so
popular in the polls then?
Because when you are brainwashed, you
are not rational.
Because you are still motivated by by
this urge to punish Gaza for the 7th of
October as if the 7th of October is the
only crime here.
Who's accountable in Israel?
All the Israelis.
All the Israelis, including yourself.
But sure, I'm part of it for them. All
the Israelis. When I go abroad and I go
quite often now, if there will be
demonstrations against my lecture or something, I will
totally understand it. If people wil not want to meet me, I'll totally
understand it. I'm part of Israel. Sure.
I never left. I never thought about leaving. I'm Israeli like any other one
and I carry all the responsibility like
any other Israeli. And we all carry a
very very deep and long responsibility
because it didn't start on the 7th of
October. Our crimes

If countries were serious about a Palestinian state, they would stop trading with Israel. Trading with Israel gives it legitimacy, a legitimacy it does not deserve. Shame on my country Canada .

Bodies of Palestinian prisoners sent by Israel unrecognisable: Gaza hospital director
Mohammed Zaqout, director of hospitals in Gaza’s Health Ministry, has spoken to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic about the “clear signs of torture” found on the bodies of Palestinians that were returned to the Gaza Strip this week.
“One body shows signs of hanging with a rope still wrapped around the neck, blindfolds around the eyes and bound hands. That martyr was placed as is and sent to us,” Zaqout said from Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
Zaqout added that many of the bodies are unrecognisable, and only six killed Palestinian prisoners transferred from Israel have been identified so far.

After hearing comments on Gaza by Mr. Gabor Maté and Stephen Kapos, Holocaust survivors and Mr. Toshiyuki Mimaki, Hiroshima survivor, the only conclusion possible: Israel has managed to transform Gaza into a morphing of Auschwitz and Hiroshima combined. Both hells at the same time. 24/7 since October 7, 2023 with increasing savagery.
The death toll today is closer to 500 to 700 thousand. The Lancet report based on April 2024 numbers estimated (low according to the publication) the death toll at around 180 thousand.
September 2025: we are most likely nearing 1 million deaths.
That’s what our politicians finance with our money.
This is what all who support Israel are responsible for.

The ICJ clarification of July 19, 2024, states:
1 Israel must leave all illegally occupied territories (Gaza, West Bank, East Jerusalem... Syrian Golan Heights... parts of Lebanon...)
2 Israel and all supporters of the illegal occupation are obligated to pay reparations (US, UK, Germany...)
The legal situation is clear and should be handled as such. - Anything else is illegal.

I used to teach a course on moral issues in fiction. One novel concerned a child growing up in a small town in Nazi Germany and her mother struggling to support the family off the proceeds of a small grocery store while her husband was fighting in the army he’d been drafted into. Almost all (not all) of the Jewish students claimed the father could have resisted the draft (without repercussions for his family). Almost all (not all) claimed the mother the child should have known about what was going on in the death camps—and done something to stop the slaughter.
I wonder how those students, now grown, would respond to Levy’s comments.

A beautiful, brilliant, deeply compassionate voice amidst a barbarous state founded upon supremacy, dispossession and colonialism. Someone like Gideon Levy should be held up and honoured with a Nobel Peace Prize.

"the damage to democracy for the Jews is irreversible" is quite a phrase...how do you have democracy for only one group? Democracy for the Jews... Really says everything doesn't it

I respect you Gideon Levy, you have the conscience of condemning the wrong that your is doing, i see others in knesset who stand up to trump with a recognition of a Palestinian state. You are a good person and this why we r here to enjoin what is right and condemn what is wrong. The civilians murdered in Gaza r not guilty of oct 7th. They israelis should blame their government for the arrogance of not recognising the right of the Palestinians to live in freedom and dignity, which they r entitled to.

In politcal terms there is nothing divided about Israel.
90% of Israeli Jews voted for parties that identify as being either on the militaristic anti-Arab right or on the religious anti-Arab right.

According to Major Jeffrey Prather and other experts the IDF allowed Oct 7th to take place just so they could use that as there reason to annihilate Gaza and kill thousands with genocide so they can take the land and turn it eventually into a French Riviera POSCH area. The Zionists leaders don’t care about the Palestinians at all the average Israeli might be ok with most Palestinians other than Hamas

How often have I said that it did not start on the 7th of October. An easy and convenient excuse for doing more of the same but on a much larger scale.
Please go the way of no longer trading with this Pariah state as the world once did with South Africa. Nothing short of this will ever work.
Please prime minister Mark Carney .... My Canadian Prime Minister.

In regard to Palestine, It is critical that we meticulously document every event, atrocity, statement, tweet, action, violation, double standard, lie, news coverage/headline/report, any statements influencers/celebs (like Jared Kushner/Dr Phil/Van Jones/Ben Shapiro/Patrick Bet-David/Jordan Peterson/Donald Trump jr/Peter Thiel/Alex Karp/Stramer statements they’ve made/tweets) and war crime on a dedicated website in regards to Palestine, show everything happening in Gaza and the West Bank by the IDF. Something like a time capsule/archive/database site/online museum like a Youtube/TikTok/Wikileaks/Wiki/AP Archive all combined where we show as much proof as possible (in as many ways digestible to people. We need an alternative to social media and mainstream news (both which is heavily censored and will continue to be). Not everyone gets information the same way (still many rely on msm/news headlines/social media). We need a platform that can’t be censored and where we can show all the truth unfiltered. People need to see the atrocities. Tracking every IDF power tripping/committing war crimes clips, every Israeli/American politician statement/quote/tweet/action (ex. John Fetterman/Brian Mast/as many as we can find/Why Trump pardoned Aviem Sella and Pollard/every AIPAC politician).
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
ALL OF IT. From America/Middle East/UK/Austrlia/Anywhere in the world Zio's have an infleunce.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
Before and after October. (I've been looking at 2014/2008/2022/pre-1948 Gaza and barely any resources that show lots of details/context/events/atrocities documented)
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
We can't afford to underestimate how much people don't know, are unaware or understand about these issues and there’s so much context we might be missing to see, better to organize all of it– we need to preserve a comprehensive record of as much proof as possible. We can’t afford Iraq/Afghanistan war like ignorance anymore, we have to spread as much awareness as we can. Please save everything you find, encourage others to as well. Social media will be censored soon and I have no faith in mainstream media at this point. This needs to be a mindset/BDS like movement. They will double down on the censorship/genocide denial and we have to fight back and at least keep track of history at it's happening.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Don't underestimate how unaware people are especially Americans. At the end of the day America has the most power to change the situation. Not everyone's algo is the same, all main social media outlets are owned by the same group as is mainstream media. We will see a push of censorship/"anti-israel laws"/genocide denial/the same talking points repeated (hostages/kamas/radical islam). We need to keep spreading awareness and keep waking people up. Lets keep track of as much context/events/history as it's happening. We can't let any moment be forgotten.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Check my channel I've highlighted 3 platforms: WaterMelonCrimes, TikTokGenocide and Gaza23 (add a dotcom to any). We need more platforms like this, please encourage it! Imagine if students/activisits/organizations/academics/journalists/the people all collabed on sometihng like this for Iraq/Afghanistan/Libya? showing the past from Iraq/Afghanistan/Libya.. the journalists/news channels/companies that profited from those wars. We need to show patterns/past behaviour and wake as many people up, we can't afford Iraq/Afghanistan war like ignorance no more especially from Americans. Once they wake up in mass we might see true change!

7:38 - The EU will and is, like the US, prove over and over again that they do care about human rights only if it is going about their political interests. And in short, that the so-called West has taken the human rights for themselves, and that they are not for the rest of the World.

If only the new arrivals had done as they promised the people. That they would add to their lives, invest capital, establish businesses with the locals, manufacturing, and mechanise agriculture, and improve the quality of life for all. Together. That was the inducement. That was the pitch. That was the possibility. If only.
