#HUNGERFORJUSTICE Broadcast with Korean Women Peasants Association (KWPA)
in partnership with Agroecology Fund.
Women make up 51.1% of major agricultural workers in farming villages in South Korea, but their knowledge and contributions often go unrecognized. Our two speakers for tomorrow, Ms. Kim Ok Im and Ms. Kim Jeong Yeol, are working to change that.
Ms. Kim Ok Im is the President of the National Federation of Women’s Farmers’ Association. She believes creating gender equality is first and foremost in the Women’s Farmers Movement. The biggest problem has been securing legal rights as heads of management and production for female farmers, so President Kim works directly with female farmers and different agencies to change the law.
Ms. Kim Jeong Yeol is an ICC member of La Via Campesina and is a part of the KWPA project My Sister’s Garden that uses CSA box programs for peasant women farmers to not only grow and distribute weekly “gerubi” of pickled radish, pear juice, and other local goods, but also create an empowered space to give peasant women a solid foundation to survive and thrive despite the impacts of agricultural trade liberalization on the rural economy and lack of equal rights and opportunities despite their prevalence in agriculture.See Less
