초록

『가람일기』에는 이병기 선생의 국어학적 활동을 살펴볼 수 있는 기록이 많이 보인다. 

가람의 국어관이나 문법관을 엿볼 수 있는 솔직한 기술을 통해 그가 우리말과 글에 대해 많은 애정과 관심을 가지고 있었다는 점을 알 수 있다. 그러한 사실에서 어문규범 정리나 사전편찬 그리고 어문교육 운동에 그가 적극적으로 참여한 것을 이해할 수 있게 된다. 

특히, 한글날 제정 및 기념과 관련된 그의 주도적인 활동이 눈에 띈다. 또한, 세간에 국문학자나 시조시인으로 알려진 것과 달리, 가람 이병기 선생은 우리말에 대하여도 깊은 연구를 수행하였다. 자신의 독특한 견해를 담은 문법서를 편찬하기도 하고 우리말과 글에 관련된 많은 글을 신문이나 잡지 등에 기고하기도 하였다. 조선어학회 회원으로 활동하면서 우리말의 연구에도 크게 기여하였다. 이런 점을 고려할 때 가람 이병기 선생은 국어학사에서 일제 강점기의 국어학 활동을 서술하는 자리에서 반드시 언급될 필요가 있는 중요한 인물이라고 할 수 있다.


In 『GARAM Diary』, we can see many records of Lee Byeng-gi`s activities in Korean linguistics. Through his frank writings, which give a glimpse of Garam’s views for Korean or grammar, he showed that he had a lot of affection and interest in Korean language and writing. From that fact, it is understandable that he actively participated in the campaign for the compilation of the rules in Korean language, the compilation of Korean dictionaries, and Korean language education. In particular, his leading activities related to the enactment and commemoration of Hangeul Day are also notable. In addition, unlike what is commonly known as a Korean literature scholar or poet, Garam Lee Byeong-gi carried out a deep study of Korean language. He composed a Korean grammar book with his own unique views and contributed many articles related to Korean language and grammar to newspapers and magazines. While working as a member of the <Joseon Language Society>, he also contributed greatly to the research of the Korean language. In this regard when we consider the activities of Korean linguistics in Japanese occupation periods, he should be mentioned as a important people in Korean linguistics history.
