PEACE: Margid Bryn-Burns and Norma Forrest strive for peace as they participate in numerous rallies. The next rally is to ban nuclear weapons on June 17.

Margid Bryn-Burns of Cleveland hopes to leave her grandchildren a legacy of peace.

RALLY: Margid Bryn-Burns of Cleveland joins other Redland women in a rally to ban nuclear weapons.

To that end, she will join other Redland women from noon to 3pm on Saturday, June 17 in a rally and march in Queen’s Park, Brisbane to ban nuclear weapons.

“I spend a lot of time doing this and there are a number of women living here in the Redlands involved with various peace organisations. What more could you leave your grand children but to stand up for what is right?” she said.

This rally supports UN negotiations to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons which is set to resume soon, following a draft treaty text released on May 22 by the Chair of the conference, Costa Rican Ambassador Elayne Whyte. It is part of a mass mobilisation on June 17 in New York and involves seven Australian cities as part of national day of action.

In Brisbane, the campaign is led by Women’s International League of Peace and Freedom (WILPF), Just Peace, Friends of the Earth, and Believing Women for a Culture of Peace.

On May 25, Ms Bryn-Burns also participated in a rally to save the Barrier Reef outside Government House. As a Quaker, she also attends the Quaker Peace vigil which is staged in King George Square on the first Friday of every month.

“We just stand in silence,” she said.

“There are so many things happening in the world. You don’t have to be helpless. I feel I am doing my bit. This is what feeds and nourishes me spiritually – getting together with like minded women. I want to leave behind a peaceful world,” she said.

“These rallies are really about social justice and that includes the environment and the refugees. People go past us and there are shy people who say nothing, but give me a thumbs up and a smile. We can all do our bit and make a difference. I really believe that,” she said.
