These Are The Generations chronicles the story of the Baes, a North Korean family that struggled to receive and pass on the gospel from generation to generation, through labor camps, prisons, interrogations, and the greatest challenge of all—everyday life in North Korea. Their story is told by Reverend Eric Foley, founder and Chief Executive Officer of Seoul USA, a ministry serving to bridge the Western church with Christians in Asia. Mr. Bae—a former prisoner for his faith in the North Korean gulag— says Christian inmates are forced to endure many hardships, inhumane treatment, and horrid conditions in prison. However, he told Foley not to feel sorry for them because, “Prison is the best seminary training a Christian can get.”

My sister and I read and discussed the message of this book on the Waikiki beach. We understand that the search for verifiable truth of faithful christians living in the DPRK required a ten-year search. The patience of the author is obvious in each clearly understandable line of this text. Perhaps no reader will truly believe the experiences described here. Most sound like fiction. Yet, each expericence of each member of the Bae family aspires me to know the Hananim described by the Bae family. This book has instilled excitement to read the bible, memorize the bible, live the Bible, and share the bible. If that was the author’s goal, then he hit the target with this reader.

Devoted to Christ and unwilling to renounce their faith North Koreans are imprisoned even now under dark and dreadful conditions. Let us not forget to pray for them. May they stand firm in their Faith and may the God of all comfort loosen the chains of darkness that hold them in bondage. Come soon Lord Jesus

This little book gives a quick overview of 3 generations of a Chinese Christian family that wound up in North Korea. The personal experiences tell of a paranoid North Korean government that goes way beyond Big Brother. These are not professional writers, just plain people with a story to tell.

This is a MUST read. We all know north Korea is bad but we don't know HOW bad until reading this book. I was a child when the Korean war took place. MaCarthur wanted to go on and rescue ALL of Korea from the communists. Truman ordered him to stop at the 39th parallel. Big mistake, although that issue is not discussed in this book. It is spine tingling and would make a good novel, but sadly, it's all true. I read it all in one sitting because i couldn't put it down.

I do enjoy reading books of an historical or true nature. This is a saga of three generations of a family that kept their faith in God and were guided to safety - but not until the end of the third generation. The hardships in North Korea are horrible to say the least. I would recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great story, yet sometimes fantastical

I'm enjoying this book. It was recommended by a friend, who thought this was related to Kenneth Bae. This is not related to him in the least.
I speak Chinese fluently and have translated for people who have suffers terrible abuses. Saying that, some of the stories are a bit fantastical. I think the translator could have done some more work to verify stories or dig fire better translation because some things sound a but far fetched.
That being said, and having lived in China for 12 years, I'm used to some of that.
Good story though, and a fascinating glimpse into North Korea.

This is a beautiful story of what true faith looks like. It is told in a simple, humble manner but describes the incredible faith and courage that this North Korean family exhibited throughout several generations, enduring persecution, harassment, never knowing whom they could trust but always letting their light shine so that their faith made life a little better for those around them. What courage and perseverance! We can all take heart from reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rare view of Christian Life in North Korea

I find myself sharing stories from this book. It is a rare presentation of life for 3 generations of Christians in North Korea. How God used the grandfather to save a village; how each generation shared their faith in God; how the son in the third generation came to a point of asking if it was possible to be a member of the communist party and a Christian a the same time. It is a powerful story of life for Christians in North Korea. I bought my book on Kindle, at some point I wouldn't be surprised if I purchase extra copies to give away.

Everyone should read this book. It tells through personal experience the horrors of living in North Korea and the lengths people will go to, to escape. If you live in a free country then thank God ! And pray for those who don't.

I am passionate about the subject of Christianity in North Korea so I know I will learn from it. However, i have a "packaging" gripe: why is it necessary to put stickers - especially the kind that just do not come off - on the back of the book? I really would like to read the reviews that are printed on the back!

How could a whole family be imprisoned, tortured and suffer for one minor transgression. The testimony of three generations of one Christian family in North Korea serves as a case study in the appalling abuse of the Pilgrim State.
