you and we are coming to you now with breaking news former president J Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100 The
Carter Center has confirmed though he served only one term in office he went
on to a distinguished second act of humanitarian work and he lived long enough to become the oldest former
president in US history Carter died peacefully Sunday at his home in Plains
Georgia surrounded by Family The Carter Center said in a statement and we are going to go now to Robert Costa with a
look back at life hi Robert good evening good to be with you
uh all words and thoughts this evening with the Carter family enter the country
to have the passing of an American president who has lived a long life a
hundred years has lived the length of a century and it was a life full with the centuries worth of events to think about
tonight his rural upbringing in Plains Georgia a place I have visited and reported on growing up on a small farm
going to a tiny school then going to the Naval Academy becoming a submarine officer moving back to Plains Georgia to
take over the family farm and then starting this improbable bid through Georgia politics through many ups and
downs ultimately becoming governor of Georgia in 1970 and carving out the idea
in America of a new South free from segregation that was going to embrace business a new modern way of thinking
when it came to social values and political values and ultimately winning the White House in 19 1976 beginning
that race as a total Outsider to the point where so many people when they heard of Jimmy Carter they said they
said Jimmy who Jimmy who and Carter of course as we all know from history embraced that Jimmy who who Mantra and
and made it part of his campaign in 1976 and you've spent time Robert covering his home planes can you talk to
us about the importance of his roots there well one of the first things that strikes you when you go to plain Georgia
is is this really a town it's so small it almost feels like a neighborhood and that's reflective of how President
Carter was raised he was raised on a farm and the school where he went to high school is now a museum and you can
go spend some time in that high school and and think about Carter's life studying hard working on the farm and
it's a hot place Southern Georgia it's not an easy place to be raised his family was in the peanut business wasn't
just the kind of peanut you eat a lot of it was peanut in the shelling business to use with livestock and to use on different farms
and he never thought of himself as someone who was just going to be confined to the Deep South he he read
about the world in school as a young boy and he thought about Big Dreams ahead
for him and for the country and he had this steeliness to him when he ran for president in 1976 many people said Jimmy
Carter had this big grin and they said the grin should win that was part of that 197 6 campaign but as someone who
has covered President Carter met him over the years what you take away from so much of his life is this core
steeliness to his character this toughness this grit to get through his childhood to be a leader in the Navy to
be a leader in Georgia ultimately to be a leader of this country and a leader in his post presidency let us not forget
this long and amazing life was punctuated by many decades as a former
president who didn't just retreat to Plains Georgia and lick his wounds about defeat but he engaged with the world won
the Nobel Peace Prize thought about peace and about how to bring Health to people across the world and Robert Early
in his career Carter spoke up in defense of civil rights and desegregation can you talk a bit about
thatal oh it was a very big deal in in fact if you look back at Time magazine
in 1971 they were covering Jimmy Carter being the new governor of Georgia giving
his nugal address in Atlanta Georgia and he said the time for segregation in the south is over and this made people in
Atlanta and in Georgia go what's he talking about this is the South we're not going to to be moving in such a fast
pace towards civil rights towards an opening up of the economy in the country and that sense when it comes to Human
Rights and civil rights but Carter was determined that he had a mandate after winning in 1970 to change how Georgia
did business and this really caught the eye of the country uh major journ
journalists like Hunter S Thompson from Rolling Stone and many many others started to come down to Georgia and say
who is this guy what's he trying to do in Georgia because Georgia was a sleepy State and Carter was a total unknown but
his determination to make Georgia something different to make it part of modern America a place where business
could grow where black Americans would have equal opportunity to white Americans to start a business this lay
the foundation for Carter to be a political star and by the 1972 convention he was was already being
talked about in a small way as a potential running mate for George McGovern and there's a famous moment in
the Jimmy Carter story 1972 he's sitting around at the convention with his AIDS like Hamilton Jordan and jod pal and he
says I've just met all the big people in American politics they're not that impressive we can beat these people we
can win and he decided back in even 1972 to think about the presidency in 1976
and that started this long journey to the White House from around 1972 19 73
to his election in 1976 and Robert let's talk more about 1976 Carter appeared to come from
nowhere uh how did a total Outsider win the White House well first Jimmy Carter
had to get through with the Washington establishment you had so many people who looked at the race in 1976 and they
thought they had a much better chance than this guy from Georgia named Jimmy Carter Jimmy who he wasn't a threat but
Carter was able to win the the nomination by reimagining what it took to be president and how to win a
nomination in brief we we've all covered the Iowa caucuses if you're a political journalist in the last 50 years but 50
years ago nearly 50 years ago in 1976 the Iowa caucuses were not the Iowa
caucuses as we think about them today Jimmy Carter put a lot of effort he called it the peanut Brigade people from
Georgia went up to Iowa and they spent time trying to sew the ground for Carter politically to get some attention and
energy for the Carter campaign and ultimately Jimmy Carter didn't win the Iowa caucuses in 1976 but he came uh
second place to kind of undecided and this catapulted him to national
attention Carter was clever even then in 1976 when the Iowa caucus has happened
you know where Jimmy Carter was that night not in Iowa he was in New York because he wanted to make sure he got on
television and his presidential Legacy is complicated uh what about the view of
him over time how has that shifted well Carter's elected in 76 takes office in
January 77 and Washington initially looks at him as an outsider and he had a
complicated personality he wasn't a glad-hander uh he wasn't Someone Like Richard Nixon who had all this
experience in Washington so some people really put a wall up to Carter and Carter put a wall up to others and he
he's acknowledged this in his own Memoirs and interviews over the years he didn't build at times the personal
relationship with a lot of the member of Congress that he really needed to to get his agenda through and so he was stying
from time to time and he grew frustrated not only only with Washington but with the country he G famously gave that
speech that's referred to as the MZ speech where he he really lamented that the country was moving in a negative
Direction and this set the tone for the Carter presidency in the eyes of many of his critics someone who was unhappy with
the country the country was unhappy with him long lines for gas the Iran hostage crisis dominated so much of the final
two years of his presidency but at the same time very icious on domestic policy saw himself as a true liberal a
progressive started the department of energy and education and on foreign policy remains one of the most ambitious
presidents of our time working with zigu uh brazinski uh he was able to think
about peace in the Middle East and to broker an agreement called the Camp David Accords uh between the Israeli
leadership and the Palestinian leadership that remains one of the sign significant pieces of foreign policy
deal making to this day well Robert thank you so much for your Insight and your reporting Robert Costa appreciates
you so much and for more on his life and Legacy I'm joined here in studio 57 by Presidential historian Doug Brinkley and
as well Jimmy Carter's biographer now as his biographer can you share stories that highlight his character and his
values well keep in mind that Jimmy Carter loved Christ and it was a being a
Baptist meant a lot to him in his last Decades of his life you would go to uh marinat the Baptist Church church and he
would um you know talk and give in in Pastor to his his congregation um after
the presidency he took his Christian values and kind of married it with his mother Miss Lillian who at 80 Miss
Lillian his mom took care of people with Leprosy I mean all over the world so he was kind of a Baptist missionary Zeal
but he created The Carter Center in Atlanta a nonprofit and boy did it take off they helped to eradicate guinea worm
disease and river blindness Carter win all over the world um declaring what is a free and fair election in fact it's
ex-president Carter who told General Emanuel Nora in Panama it was a
fraudulent election in 1989 steep down you know you're it was illegal he did
the same thing when Daniel Ortega of the sandinistas Lost in Nicaragua he went and saw him and said you lost but if you
step down you would have brought democracy to Nicaragua so this is somebody who then as ex-president as for
Habitat for Humanity there's something amazing about thinking somebody like Carter was in the Oval Office dealing
with the peace in the Middle East and Russia and then lo and behold he's working in lowincome neighborhoods
building houses for people in uh need and he won a Nobel Prize as ex-president
he should have won one as president for Camp David with manakum bean and anoir sodat they won but Carter was the broker
but I think when we reflect on his death I think of the long 100 Years of Jimmy Carter not just the governor not just
the president not just the ex-president but this extraordinary American life and it is often said that Carter redefined
the post presidency how did he do that well they used to say he used the presidency as a as as a stepping stone
for greater accomplishment it was a backhanded compliment because Carter got beat definitively by Ronald Reagan in
1980 he got he did not get reelected but but during his presidency he did things
that helped inform the the post presidency Carter is the one who made the term human rights synonymous um with
our state department yes Elanor Roosevelt did it with the UN but Carter was the human rights President Carter's
the one that could tell of you know because the the Panama Canal treaty with
uh ex-president Trump soon to be president again Trump is saying why did we give Panama Canal to Panama that was
Carter treaty which was a big deal when he did that it's Jimmy Carter who recognized the People's Republic of
China as president so as ex-president they treated him in a grand fashion he
was the first president to go to Nigeria he denounced apartheid as president so
parts of those four years 1977 to 81 things he did he was able to continue
and use them for this long shadow of an American life so the shift from
presidency to post presidency this humanitarian work how was he able to make this shift so successfully it was a
horrible first year he lost he was able to Reagan uh sent him to be like an
Envoy to greet our Iran Americans that were held hostage in Iran Carter went to
Germany greeted them then he went to PLS it's January it was cold he sat there
and Roslin Carter and Jimmy Carter were depressed they didn't know what they're going to do with their lives and then in
the the fall of 81 anoir Sadat was assassinated and he that was a brother
anoir to him and he realized that Sadat gave his life for the peace cause of Israel in Egypt and Carter got more grit
and said I'm going to go and I'm going to give my life to be a peacemaker and
it gave him the inspiration to start building the Carter Center and start doing all these things and he wouldn't
have been a incredible ex-president without help of people like former Secretary of State James Baker or even
George trer Walker Bush um you know and then he went anger presidents I mean Bill Clinton was furious at Carter for
going into Haiti or North Korea they called parachuting to peace um Carter
believed that he if there was a civil war going on the UN couldn't mediate an internal Civil War but as a leader of
the Carter Center he could go in and kind of serve as a super Med mediator it worked a lot and it didn't work a lot
but he always gave 100% to that cause of Peace so obviously a complex Legacy
um but how did the Public's perception of his legacy shift over time you know I
think Robert um Casa as always was so great in in you know giving us that
snapshot U but you know it started turning on Carter he had a great inaugural he walked his inaugural he
publicly said the Democratic party is a is a albatross around my neck well
that's your party Mr Carter what he met was the liberal Ted Kennedy wing and the more moderate to hawkish far policy
scoop Jackson of Washington state wing and he didn't like politics so he was kind of a an outlier a one offer and yet
he was a micromanager and he read all the documents and he did all these things himself but the public started
turning on him um stagflation you know long gas lines the economy wasn't doing
great and add to that he did a blunder I think when he boycotted what didn't
allow our own Olympic athletes to to be in 1980 the Moscow Olympics like punishing our athletes because the
Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan so by the end and when you got beat by Reagan nobody would call themselves a Carter
Democrat he was seen as you know a one- termer not high in the polls but with
perspective now we start laundry listing and Robert was doing some of that you know he created the department of energy
created Department of Education FEMA is his he saved all the lands in Alaska the
size of California as Wilderness and national monuments you know he's a um
the list you start doing it and say wow that really was quite a one-term presidency Carter had and it wasn't as
bad at as a relationship with Congress as people often as presupposed but he
got run over by the Reagan Revolution and nobody ever forgave him in the Democratic party politically but the
American people learned to love the cut of his jip and as he's gone now we I
remember what George Orwell said about mahat mandhi Orwell they great writer you know didn't didn't care for Gandhi
and then when Gandhi was gone he said God what a clean smell Gandhi Left Behind now we flect on Carter like what
an honest decent man of character and integrity who cared about agriculture
and cared about the environment and cared about Global Peace and we had a giant amongst us so Jimmy Carter goes
down as one of the the really great moral figures as well as political figures of the 20th and 21st century
just extensive accomplishments I do want to shift Focus um to his personal life his family life his wife Roslin died um
they were the longest married uh first couple in American history can you talk a bit about they are a love story of all
love stories um you can read it in their correspondents to each other um they
they they had shorthand like nobody's business their children were born at different Naval bases Carter is the
first person in American history to graduate from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis but his ambition and he was
ambitious was to be chief of Naval operations but he got bounced around with his wife I mean that one of the
kids you know they're born in you know they're up in Rhode Island and then they're in Virginia and Hawaii and then
he was in a nuclear submarine for the rickover class so in many ways they just were inseparable and as president he
would have her sit in on meetings and then in her own right she became a champion of mental illness when it was
stigmatized and she's the person who brought mental illness to the Forefront the way Betty Ford did alcohol and drug
addiction and then every step of the way she was with her husband and his post presidency from house building to
peacemaking um and they were not the most they they were completely uh
unostentatious they could live on a sleep on a cot he would make his own you know uh Woodworks and paint and he was a
very a man of old school rural upbringing who could fix it and do anything would surprise you if you
Carter wrote poetry he wrote a novel he painted all the time and his wife was
there with them and sharing in this journey their big love became the outdoor worlds and she became a great
fly Fisher person like himself and they would go to these incredible uh reaches
outreaches of the world and uh sit by the stream and they very much connected
God and their religion to the natural world and it gave them a lot of soulless
as did staying in Plains knowing your Neighbors being part of the community showing up at local events staying there
and even Georgia we call Red State now and even America's Georgia area is red
in political terms but everybody respects Carter because he didn't leave most people leave the presidency and go
to get rich they become billionaires almost get big p Carter wrote books and stayed in ples he didn't serve CEOs of
boards wasn't trying to be a billionaire he's a modest person like Harry Truman one of his Heroes and reflect back and
we don't see that cut of that chib much anymore now and that character and that skill set you've been discussing did
that come from his his parents his family can you talk a bit about his relationship with his father and how
that was a guiding principle of course look his mother and father were very different James Carter was a
segregationist still believe black said to go in the back door Jim Crow's Georgia a great person overseeing the
peanut crops to a degree but he never really transcended the racism where Miss
Lillian was a deep integrationist so if you were black and she was home you'd come in the front door her hero was
Jackie Robinson and she went to see him U when he integrated baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers um she created a place
called conia Farms where people that were in U interracial relationships she
gave them medical care cuz she was a nurse I mean she was a progressive left
uh Jimmy uh Jesse Jackson family he said Jimmy Carter's W for pres I'd vote for his for his mother in a heartbeat you
know because she was so Progressive where his father wasn't but when his dad died Carter saw all these people from
Sumter County Georgia show up at the funeral line up and they each told him you know your dad gave me money when our
crops didn't come in or you know we we had an accident in our house and he came and helped us fix it and all the good
deeds his dad did made Carter think you know what I can live a more meaningful life here in Suter County get involved
with school boards politics uh on a local level than maybe trying to be the
big U big wig in the US Navy but his military Navy habits are where he never
weighed a pound more than he was supposed to weigh he do the recommend he got up at at the crack of dawn he stayed
in perfect physical shape he hunted he hiked he collected arrowheads he walked
uh in on long distances and so uh he he saw Life as a great bounty to be lived
and have complete control over his emotions and perhaps too much so we we
call him our engineer president you know because he was a nuclear engineer but he he he had to have things kind of in
control he wasn't a sailor he didn't go with the winds or spontaneity he kind of
was a nuclear Submariner going from point A to point B what didn't he do
well Douglas frankley thank you so much for for your insights and for this look back really appreciate you here Douglas
Brinkley presidential historian and for more we go now to CBS News producer Elizabeth Campbell joining us over the
phone Elizabeth you just spoke with a former Carter White House staffer how are people close to him reacting to his
death it was certainly an emotional conversation this staffer was clearly
choked up when he was talking to me about just what an impact former President Carter had had on so many
different people he really has a life of service like Mr Brinkley was just saying there from the time in the Navy to the
school board to Governor to state senator to president and he brought so many people in that type of civil
service with him when we sat down with his grandson for his H 100th birthday we were talking about how he wanted to be
remembered and Jim he said that he wanted his grandfather to remember to someone who was always trying to help
others and always making sure others felt seen and heard and he said one of his proudest Civic Dy was voting and he
was always so civically minded and what will the 39th president most be
remembered for you know I think again that is a great moment of how he the former
president himself quipped that he spent four years behind the Resolute desk in the Oval Office but 40 years behind the
copy Resolute desk in the Carter Center that truly is his legacy of helping people internationally with whether it's
disease or health or anything like that and that Carter Center in Atlanta truly is a testament to him and rosn Carter's
work and how long they helped people and let's talk a little bit about public observances and memorials do we know
anything right now about funeral arrangements being planned we don't know for know for sure
we're still getting things figured out they've started a legacy website for anyone who wants to pay their tribute to
former President Carter through the Carter Center either online or social media obviously his his past few
birthdays they've done a big digital mosaic for anyone who wants to pay tribute that way we expect a ceremony in
Plains we obviously expect a ceremony in DC and as he goes along toy ceremony in
Atlanta as well so nothing officially planned yet but that is what we expect for a caliber of when a former president
passes away and we just had Douglas Brinkley here the a presidential historian Jimmy Carter's biographer um
can we just ask you about the political Legacy um what lessons can we draw from
his leadership and approach to diplomacy absolutely I think we have to
remember that the time when President Carter got elected it was right after the scandal of former president Richard
Nixon followed by President Ford and Carter's whole promise to people when he started campaigning was I will never lie
to you and that was what he promised to do and that is what he did do he had varying levels of efficiency throughout
his presidency I think that's fair to say but to that point that Mr Brinkley was making of how steadfast he held in
everything that he did that is truly a testament I mean this is a man who after the presidency went home to PLS to teach
Sunday school he always made time for his grandkids he always made time for anyone who wanted to come to planes and
having been to Plains a several times myself that Community still just truly loves him he was always giving back
always looking out for other people and that's not something you always see from a former president and as you said
dedicated to a life of service a humanitarian can you speak a little bit more about
that yeah I think it really to him was one of his proudest achievements if you look at his desk in the Carter Center on
it was a lot of momentos and a lot of reflections of his time but especially
eradicating guinea worm was very close to him he had a plaque about that on his desk that he saw every day in the Carter
Center and his humanitarian work going overseas as often as he did he obviously was known for the Peace Accords during
his time in the presidency but he was always trying to help others and that Carter Center Legacy is something that
continues on and even in through the final part of his days he was still checking in and getting updates from The
Carter Center and he told his grandson at one point that he had now trusted him with that and that he wanted that to
continue well beyond him and his time well Elizabeth Campbell thank you so much for your Insight and now we turn to
CBS News political reporter toian small joining us now uh let's get right to how
is president-elect Trump reacting to President Carter's death yeah Natalie we're getting the
first reaction from the incoming president Donald Trump just over 30 minutes ago he took to a social media
site truth social to write a statement that had really great reverence and uh
respect and most importantly Sympathy for the family of Jimmy Carter in this
statement he said there should be uh deference for the office he says this is a small Club of the president so he said
the 38th president deserves nothing but respect and honor for his service to the
country this is uh I have to say a statement that comes in stark contrast
to what the president said just doing Jimmy Carter's 100th birthday in October then he mocked Jimmy Carter saying that
uh when it comes to his legacy he's happy that Joe Biden is President
because he feels that history will look better on his uh Administration compared to that of
Joe Biden's but in this statement though I want to point out just one piece of it he said the challenges Jimmy faced as
president came at a pivotal time for our country and as he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all
Americans for that we all owe him a debt of gratitude so the president Trump
there uh showing great respect for Jimmy Carter though the two clearly did not
see eye to eye before Natalie and Tran What Les can current presidents learn
from Jimmy Carter well it's about uh the lasting
Legacy right so as you know he he's passing uh on his H 100th year of Life
uh his legacy goes beyond of what just happened when he was in office there will be probably a lot of parallels to
uh how he left office compared to Joe Biden but it's what he does or what he did after his passing so we talked about
the philanthropy we talked about how he worked with families to help build homes for them that's ultimately the Legacy
that the Carter family and the foundation is looking to promote especially in his passing right now
Natalie and a lot of his accomplishments came after he left office can you speak
about the post presidency yeah I I think probably one
of the most relevant or consequen although this happened toward the latter end was that deal with uh the Panama
Canal turning back over to Panama this is something that we've talked about recently because Donald Trump has talked
about wanting to have the US resume control or take back over control over that Canal as we talk about foreign
policy and we look at compare and contrast the styles of President Carter to Donald Trump it is a clear Stark
difference Donald Trump has long been uh an advocate of having a more aggressive approach to uh foreign allies but also
to foreign nations in general uh as he looks uh as we compare I should say the
two that is ultimately one that will be top of mind because it is so recent that Donald Trump is looking to invoke and
potentially reverse what Jimmy Carter has set there the legacy of Jimmy Carter which is again uh washing the US hands
of the canal so it can go back to control of Panama and do you think Carter's death will impact the incoming
Trump administration at all maybe I mean Donald Trump uh has
made it clear especially in his post to social media which the statement didn't come from but I would say this is a
deviation from his normal post he's spent especially after the election days
upon days mocking Democrats trolling them in these settings on this platform
he's made it clear that his administration is looking to distance himself from the policies of the left he
hasn't been too Cooperative with Democrats even directing House Republicans to break from any deals any
negotiations with Democrats because he's looking to push his agenda which he's calling this American first agenda uh
this is certainly something that I think will be reflective on him especially moving forward as this is such a fresh
passing but it's unlikely that it will move the president to act any differently than we've seen him act over
the past couple of months tan small thank you so much and for more we want to bring in CBS News correspondent
Skyler Henry who is at the Carter Center in Atlanta as we speak here um Skyler
The Carter Center obviously such a huge part of Jimmy Carter's legacy can you talk about the organization and the work
that he led hey Natalie good evening to you well this Carter Center is simply the
Touchstone the Milestone if you will for President Carter in his post presidency
world uh it is the beacon if you will for health and peace the work that those
here have been able to do all across the globe whether it's eradicating worm
disease in Guinea or spreading messages of Peace in all sorts of countries throughout Africa and Eastern Europe and
even Haiti and I think that that is something that the president will ultimately uh be remembered for fondly
and greatly just the work that he has been able to do uh following his time at the White House he was renowned for his
humanitarian work work also the work that he and his late wife Rosen uh were
able to accomplish on all platforms all across the globe the messages that they
spread the work that they were able to do and really that was something that so many people gravitated to in the Years
uh following his time in the white house so much so that when Carter's wife rosn
passed last year that that was something that simply kept popping up when with people that we spoke with they said they
were just so uh admir they admired what uh the Carters stood for when we went
down the plane same thing they said the thing that Plains was known for was peanuts and the Carters and just the
amount of work that they have been able to do all across the world all across the country for that matter as it
relates to their philanthropic work whether it Habitat for Humanity or other uh areas where they decided to uh sort
of reach out and try to help as many people as possible I think a lot of people recognize that even people who
have already shown up here to the Carter Center to pay their respects we heard from one woman who wasn't even from here
happened to be in Atlanta with her significant other and actually said that she wanted to stop here to pay her
respects because Jimmy Carter was one of her favorite people let alone favorite presidents and I think that that is
something that the former president will go down in history for just being so much of a Beacon of Hope a beacon of
light uh peace uh and philanthropic work I think it is in uh understatement to to
talk about the work that he has been able to do uh during his 100 years of life and Skyler we always hear Jimmy
Carter always stayed very connected to his Georgia roots to home uh can you
talk more about how he's being Remembered in the state I know you just gave some personal anecdotes of people
coming by there yeah sure sure well let's start with government we've
received statements from Senators rapael waro who sent a statement out saying that president Carter was one of his
Heroes his leadership was driven by love his life's project grounded in compassion and commitment to human
dignity and we've been seeing statements like that from uh officials all across
uh the state here whether they Senators Governor uh uh Brian Kemp or other uh
members of Congress and um also I mean this is someone who is rooted in Georgia I talked about planes that's where the
Carters were they didn't move to Atlanta they didn't move to Washington DC or New York City they stayed right there in
plain so much so that just about everyone you talked to when you were down there had a particular anecdote or
story about what the Carters meant to them whether it's their Sunday school service that he would lead or the work
that they would do throughout the community down there and I think that that is something it sort of speaks to
who uh President Carter was uh and so now it'll be interesting to see sort of
how he will continue to be remembered we know with uh the late life uh Rosland
the funerals uh procession and ceremonies that took place both here in Atlanta uh and also down in Plains and
we expect for President Carter's Memorial to be similar to that Skyler
Henry thank you so much from outside the Carter Center there uh now we turn to presidential historian and author Alexis
Co joining us now and Alexis you visited Carter's Hometown what did you take away
from that trip how thank you for having me it's uh it's
remarkable to reflect on his life as it was when I visited his his hometown over
a decade ago I went to his Sunday school where he was preaching and people from all over the world had traveled to
Plains Georgia to see him speak and he was impassioned he was um relatable and
he was surprising he talked about how he how he was angry at God because his
grandson had just died he was a very relatable president very relatable and what about
his biggest achievements um we're going to go very large scale here well in
office yes absolutely I mean it you know you cannot talk about Carter in office a
really you know in retrospect a brief part of his life but you can't talk about him without talking about what an
amazing accomplishment the Camp David Accords were it was signed by Jimmy Carter Egyptian president and War sadad
an Israeli Prime Minister then Min in 1978 and it established a framework for
a historic peace treaty concluded between Israel and Egypt Egypt
recognized Israel for the first time it had been the first meaningful peace
between these nations in thousands of years and so that is a huge accomplishment um you know I I I
sometimes think though uh that that his biggest accomplishment was coming in
after Ford after one of the greatest crises in the executive office the
nation had ever faced with Richard Nixon and establishing uh propriety and and
confidence in the office that was a great contribution now we spoke about his
major accomplishments what about his personal life can you also talk about the legacy of Jimmy and Rosland together
as the longest living presidential couple yes yes it's interesting I I once
asked I'm privileged to know Doris Prince Goodwin as a mentor and I once asked her because she had conducted this
famous interview in which Carter said I have lust in my heart if he if Carter
was maybe too good to be president too good of a person to to um on it and she
said possibly and I think this is one of the examples he had a high school sweetheart he married they had a long
marriage yes he he sometimes thought about other people as as I think any normal person does but they were the
greatest of Partners um you know top he he will never rank top 10 uh in the cpan
presidential rankings but as far as marriages absolutely and we really see that throughout the presidency she was a
she was a loyal advisor when I saw her in Planes she was standing up to interrupt his sermon to inject uh facts
and FL check in real time and she was next to him when they were doing that
good work for decades with the Carter Center in Atlanta um you know ensuring
free and fair elections all over the world and also eradicating Guinea worms 99% of them in Africa which has greatly
increased life expectancy and enriched lives there and it's really a tremendous
achievement well Alexa as you said both relatable but also larger than life thank you so much for joining us thank
you and now we turn to CBS News White House reporter Willie Inman joining us
from St Croy where President Biden is currently on vacation how are the
president and first lady responding to the death of Jimmy Carter hey there Natalie Good To Be With
You from St Cy President Biden and the first lady sent out a lengthy statement
about the life of Jimmy Carter I want to bring a part of that statement for our viewer she said with his compassion and
moral Clarity he worked to eradicate disease forg peace advaned civil rights and human rights promote free and fair
elections house the homeless and always advocate for the least of us he saved lives he saved lifted and changed the
lives of people all across the globe that statement at least part of it coming from uh President Biden and the
first lady they also mentioned in this statement that they've known Jimmy Carter and Rosalyn Carter for some six
decades this was a long relationship and clearly the president is very close to
former President Carter he had attended rosalin Carter's memorial service last year the first lady attended as well
that was perhaps the last time they were able to see each other it was early on in the Biden Administration during
President Biden's presidency where both he and the first lady Went Down to Georgia to see both Jimmy Carter and
Rosalyn Carter and take that famous picture with all four of them together so certainly a lengthy relationship
between President Biden the current president and former president and Jimmy Carter as we celebrate his Life in
longlasting Legacy natly and Willie President Biden said he will hold an official state funeral in Washington DC
what will that look like yeah there's a lot of pump and
Circumstance that comes with holding an official seat Funeral for a leader like
Jimmy Carter like a former president now President Biden has already officially begun that process with releasing the
statement as Skyler Henry pointed out my colleague they will be part of this that will take place in Georgia but a huge
part of it will also take place in Washington DC where you often times will see the current president the first lady
and former presidents former first ladies all in attendance there is certainly a lengthy list of things to do
and it'll be a dayslong process we don't yet know the date of that state funeral
when it will be held but we certainly know that part of it that will take place in Washington DC Natalie and
Willie um also his uh can you tell us about his plans for his
burial yeah part of that will include uh the former president one of the wishes
that uh we're certainly anticipating is that he's buried next to his wife we know the heat is from Plains he's a
Georgia a son of Georgia a son of Plains Georgia so that will perhaps likely be his final resting place and we know that
part of uh the Land There where Rosalyn Carter is buried was donated to the National Park service so making it a
historic site a place that people can really just go and visit and take solace
and the lasting Legacy that he's had on the state of Georgia a place that I know
very well being from Georgia he is much beloved in my home state uh down there in the peach state so certainly we
anticipate all of this process will begin in the coming days uh we'll found out more details not only from the
family but uh from the administration as well that has to really just plan not only this estate but the inauguration
for president-elect Trump as well so part of those Services taking place in DC but much of it will really just go
home to where Jimmy Carter's from and that will indeed be playings Georgia Natalie and Willie as you were there in
St Croy we can hear the waves behind you sounds very Serene uh President Biden wrapping up his time in office what can
we expect from him in the days ahead yeah well the president's here
this is a place that he knows very well he spends uh often times a part of the
holidays here with his family vacationing this is his final vacation with his family as president there's
certainly a lengthy list of things that the president has on his to-do list sending out more aid for Ukraine uh the
president will likely try to do that before January 20th when the president-elect takes office on top of
that there are more Pardons and commutations that the president will likely uh give out we did get some news
recently about student Aid uh that is something that people have really kept their eye on especially when it comes to
those public uh student loan forgiveness that's certainly something that the bid Administration has tried to do uh no
word on if there'll be any more uh large scale student loan forgiveness but the president uh did the Department of
Education I should say did that just a few days ago and one other thing I wanted to also mention Natalie as a president will travel to Italy to see
the pope this is something that the president has close to his heart he is a devout Catholic he goes Church uh
essentially every week we saw him attend church yesterday where he made some comments gave some news about the aeran
aircraft he was asked whether or not Putin is to blame for that crash the president said he had to talk with his
team and be briefed on that situation uh but we certainly anticipate that will be a big trip for the president to meet
with the Pope and other Italian leaders of course but a large focus of that trip in early January will be that meeting
between him and the pope there in Vatican City city natal Willie thank you so much for joining us
from St Croy and our coverage of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter continues now with the CBS Evening News
with jinka Duncan
