As the daughter of a fierce Tiger Mother, I avoided this book for the longest time. This book was bittersweet for me. At moments it was hard to read, the stories mirroring my own experiences, albeit too close for comfort. I felt I would be doing a disservice to Amy Chua if I didn't complete this book, so I stuck with her.
Resist the negative reviews out there, a lot of people judge this book before completing it. This is a story of a woman raising her children with her best intentions. Her method worked for one daughter and it didn't for the other. Writing this book took bravery and self awareness. She didn't have to share her story, but I'm so glad she did.

Amy caught a lot of flack for being so hard on her kids, but the key to this book is that she admits that with the younger daughter, that method didn't work. Even so, Lulu learned the most valuable lesson - determination, focus, and discipline. I like that Amy is honest about how she behaved and why, and I like that she admits that she knew when she was getting it wrong, and couldn't make herself course correct.
I treat my son with the same expectations that Amy had in the book, I'm not mean like Amy was, but I expect certain things from him because I know he has the capability to do everything that is asked, perfectly (with practice, that is). His attitude has changed too. He understands that practice, on math or clarinet, actually works. If only for this one thing, this book was completely worth the read.

5.0 out of 5 starsI actually really liked this bookApril 12, 2016

I actually really liked this book. I found the author very funny. People need to lighten up. This woman obviously realizes her way of parenting is extreme and even acknowledges that it worked for one daughter and not the other. I found her to be very witty and at the same time vulnerable about trying to find the best parenting style that fit her family.

4.0 out of 5 starsEasy to Diss, But Useful to ReadDecember 7, 2013
Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A book that's ssooooo easy to hate (particularly if you haven't read it) and so thought-provoking (if you have) certainly bears reading. Since it is a very easy read, with a gripping story line (who will win?), that's no major challenge, and I wish that everybody who damns this book would actually read it. The book is about, as very few will need reminding, the "Chinese Way" of raising children, which seems to be pretty much the opposite of the permissive. endorsing "American Way". An exaggeration of either method will underline some major problems, and Ms. Chua's book certainly does. But her book also challenges some American orthodoxies that need challenging: for example, every child is a winner, and every child should do what they enjoy doing. Ms. Chua points out that things are not generally fun until you are good at them, and that life is a very competitive sport. There's lots wrong in her child care approach (an issue she goes into herself in the last chapters of the book) but there is also a lot that is constructive.
I read this a few years ago, and since then the "The Smartest Kids in the World" has been published. That focusses on both sides of Ms. Chua's dilemma -- over-demanding Asian standards, and under-rigorous U.S. patterns. Perhaps Ms. Chua will get a bit more positive attention, as the problems with U.S. education come into focus.

5.0 out of 5 starsthoroughly enjoyed it!December 7, 2014
Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found the writing to be very intelligent, witty, and insightful. Brutally honest; I found myself agreeing with her perceptions regarding the way some "Westerners" raise their children. This book is a very entertaining read, but I learned a lot from it,too. It takes a very brave and strong woman to sacrifice being liked by her children, in order to give them the gift of being exceptional human beings, and having experiences their mall-going peers will never have. Having your children not appreciate the love it took to do what was best for them( even while fighting your own doubts),is an exquisite pain to which most good parents can relate; and is well conveyed in this book. I put this book on my "wish list" after seeing an inept interview on the "today" show. I "got" what the author was trying to say,and thought she handled the bashing from an interviewer that obviously didn't read the book, quite well. I admired the author, and I'm glad I finally got around to reading her book.
