작년 여름에 『제국의 위안부』　영문판이 나왔지만 딱 한번 간단히 알리기만 했고 더이상 언급하지 않았었다. 당시엔 민사재판이 아직 남아 있었기 때문에 조심스럽기도 했고, 무엇보다 마음이 아직 무거웠기 때문이다.

하지만 한달 전에 드디어 민사재판도 종료되었으니 뒤늦게나마 대문에 걸어둔다. 영어권 페친은 많지 않으니 선전을 위해서라기보다는 아직 복구되지 못한 한국어판을 위해서. 언제가 될 지 몰라도 아마도 복구되는 그날까지.

영어권에서 나온 서평은 거의 없는 듯 해 실망을 넘어 잊고 지내던 중, 지인이 알려 줘 보게 된 아마존 리뷰는 기대 이상이었다.

If you are trying to understand the relationship between Korea and Japan today, you have to read this book.
Park Yuha's book challenges the common victim-perpetrator narrative by emphasizing that not all women were abducted by the Japanese army and that Korean middlemen also played a role. I bought the book based on a warm recommendation from a good friend and was very pleasantly surprised.
The topic it deals with is extremely difficult and controversial. Authors who write on this topic face a lot of criticism and I can understand if an author chooses not to write about it.

Unfortunately, most authors choose the easy way out and take the Korean side, even though the Japanese side has important and strong arguments.

It was therefore refreshing that Park Yuha managed to create a balanced and clear analysis of the topic. She sheds light on both sides and convinces with her clear writing style. She gives the reader all the information they need to form their own opinion.
Furthermore, she promotes the need to establish a dialog between the two countries and to promote mutual understanding.

I can warmly recommend the book.

I really loved the book. I admire books who challenge classic views on conflicts. This book challenges everything Korea is propagating. It gives you great insights and shakes all your previous believes on the comfort women matter.
I was surprised about many facts the author is stating and by the fact that Korean society is so eagerly denying involvement and guilt.
I recommend this book to everyone who loves to be challenged and is not looking for simplistic answers and explanations!

I know this book has caused a huge controversy in Korea as it challenges many of the common
nationalist narratives. Park Yuha argues that not all comfort women were forcibly swallowed up

I think it is extremely important to form your own opinion on this complex topic. Therefore,
everyone should read this book before drawing any conclusions.

I discovered this book during a deep dive into WWII history, sparked by a conversation with a friend from Seoul. I stumbled across this book by chance and can only warmly recommend it.

The book provides brilliant insights into historical discussions on human rights, international relations and accountability. The book manages to successfully break up and challenge dominant views.

An approach that hardly exists in Korea. Korea is stuck and entangled in views that do not allow reconciliation with Japan. This is precisely why books like this are very important and must be read.

Every so often, you come across a book that makes you stop, think, and challenge your own biases and misconceptions. This is certainly one of those books. Yuha has faced a lot of criticism for her work, but her dedication and effort are evident in the quality of the content. The main takeaway from the book is a call for a more nuanced understanding of the Comfort Women issue.
