차남 봉근의 죽음은 춘원의 가치관에 일대 변혁을 가져온다. 특히 이념으로서의 문학 에서 미적 대상으로서의 문학으로 변모하는 과정을 보여주는 그의 일본어 소설 「만영감 의 죽음」은 이광수 문학에 있어 하나의 분기점이라 할 수 있다. 비록 일본어로 쓰인 작품 이긴 하지만 이 소설은 이전에 보여주던 그의 문학세계와는 확연한 차이가 있다. 민족주 의적 거대담론이나 안창호나 이순신으로 대표되는 문제적 개인이 아니라 평범한 일상에 서 만날 수 있는 ‘사람’에 대한 소설이라는 점에서 비로소 「만영감의 죽음」은 근대소설의 본질에 근접했다고 볼 수 있다. 특히 주인공 만영감의 죽음을 통해 근대의 위물성을 고발 함과 동시에 자본과 결탁된 전통 질서의 그릇된 권위를 해체하려는 춘원의 작가정신은 이전의 문학세계에서는 볼 수 없었던 대목이다. 지고지순한 사랑을 위해 죽음까지 불사 하는 만영감을 통해 춘원은 죽음의 미적 근대성을 획득하고 있었다. 이 미적 근대성은 춘원 문학이 도달한 소설의 근대성을 의미하며, 향후 전개될 그의 소설을 가늠해볼 수 있다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 갖고 있다.
The death of Lee Kwang-Soo's second son, Lee Bong-Geun, brings about an epoch in Lee Kwang-Soo's sense of values. Especially, Death of Man Yeong-Gam written in Japanese language is a watershed in his literary career, that is, from a literature as an ideology to a literature as an aesthetic object. Though it is written in Japanese langage, it is a work of difference with his previous works in his literary outlook. It can be said that it is adjacent to the essence of modern novel in that it is not a work of heroic protagonists such as Ahn Chang-Ho or Lee Soon-Shin and of a nationalistic grand discourse but a work of 'person' who is supposed to meet in ordinary lives. Especially, it is notable that he brings out prominently his spirit as a writer, with which indicts the pursuit of material immersed in modern societies, and also with which seeks to deconstruct the false authority of traditional order in colluded with capital. This literary quality of him is hardly ever seen before. Lee Kwang-Su acquires an aesthetic modernity of death by way of Man Yeong-Gam, the protagonist of the novel, who dares any danger including his own death for supreme and purest love. This aesthetic modernity means a modernity of his literary outlook. And it has a significant meaning in that it gives us a basis of anticipation and understanding for his further development of his novel.
