About the Film
A People Without a Land, is a feature-length documentary that challenges the conventional wisdom about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Why Are We Making This Film?
A People Without a Land grew out of our frustration with the narrowness and lack of depth that characterizes so many discussions about the conflict. We wanted to make a film that would both broaden the conversation and articulate a vision for a real and lasting solution.
Unlike many films about Israel/Palestine, we do not limit our field of vision to Israel’s 1967 occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
A People Without a Land examines the questions that lie at the heart of the conflict:
- Why has the peace process failed?
- What does it mean that Israel is a Jewish State?
- What should happen to the millions of Palestinian refugees?
We believe that by directly addressing these questions, we can jump-start a conversation that will ultimately lead to a just solution.
What Will the Money Be Used For?
Making a feature-length documentary is expensive. The good news is that our film is very far along. A People Without a Land is in post-production, which means that we’ve already finished shooting the film and we are now one year into editing. Thanks to a previous campaign, we have been able to go from 360 hours of raw footage down to a 75 minute rough cut, complete with subtitles. But we’re not quite there yet. In particular, we need motion graphics work, color correction, sound editing, and sound mixing. And of course, there are the costs associated with procuring archival footage.

We feel very lucky to have Daniel Kahn and the Painted Bird on board with our film. I think you’ll agree that their music is a perfect complement to our project. We also feel lucky to be working with the talented Alan Sufrin of Stereo Sinai who is in the process of composing an original score for the film. Independent documentary filmmaking is a risky endeavor beset on all sides by intimidating challenges. This is even more true of films that deal with contentious political issues like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But once you accept the challenges in advance and work through them, you get to do something that can’t be done any other way. You get to shine a light on an issue that is misunderstood. To make this kind of filmmaking possible, we need your support. Of course there are still risks and challenges on the road ahead, but we feel confident in telling you that most of them have already been met. It’s been a long four years, but we’re finally entering the home stretch of the filmmaking process and with your help, we will finally be able to complete our film.

Barely better than mediocre
Good photography, editing and presentation but the content can only be described as mediocre. With a caveat: As to the current circumstances and situation, it does a fairly good job, but much of the history is mere repetition of propaganda generated and perpetuated over the years. As an example, it states that the Israelis were attacked by the Arabs in 1948, after the declaration of statehood. However, it's exactly the opposite, it was the Zionist forces that began the takeover and ethnic cleansing of Palestine immediately following the UN Partition Resolution (Nov. 29, 1947), even going far beyond the lines designated in UN 181 (which ultimately resulted in armistice lines subsequently known either as the "1949 lines" or the "1967 lines"). The "war" as such didn't begin on May 15, 1948 (declaration of statehood) as evidenced by the fact that seizing territory by force of arms -- including massacres, pillaging, expulsions, rape and atrocities on civilian populations -- took place well before that date. Deir Yassin, the most widely known example, took place on April 9, 1948. Also, with few exceptions, the Arabs did not fight WITHIN the lines delineated in UN 181, they were actually under orders NOT to (the fighting within the lines was mostly with Palestinian irregulars, whose towns, villages and fields were threatened). The assertion that the Israelis were attacked on May 15, 1948 is a blatant falsehood generated as propaganda and reiterated ad nauseam over the years. When the Arab League forces attacked, they attacked within PALESTINIAN territory, in defense of that territory and its people. They did NOT attack what became known as "Israel" on May 15, 1948. In short, the Zionists were not the persecuted victims they portrayed themselves to be, quite the opposite. The producers would have done well to have this material fact checked, rather than recycling once more the old, tired and demonstrably false propaganda we've been exposed to over the years.
