ONE YEAR AGO TODAY, on May 10, 2024, the UN General Assembly expressed the will of the world and voted overwhelmingly that the State of Palestine should be recognized as a full member nation of the UN, which the US had recently blocked in the Security Council.
Previously on April 23, 2024 this page had asked.
"What if the UN General Assembly voted on whether Palestine should become a Full Member of the UN as an independent sovereign State?"
On September 10, 2024 the UN General Assembly voted to seat the State of Palestine in the General Assembly, a vote which could not be vetoed as is the case in the Security Council. The seating of the State of Palestine in the General Assembly gave it the power to present resolutions, participate in General Assembly sessions, meetings, conferences, and other privileges Palestine did not have as an Observer Member.
Shortly after that, on September 27, 2024, that a majority of the members of the UN General Assembly walked out , refusing to listen to Benjamin Netanyahu's speech to the General Assembly.
The US, with its veto in the Security Council is the only obstacle to the will of the world to recognize the State of Palestine.
If Israel and the US wold get out of the way, the UN, Arab League, EU, other nations and world institutions are ready to immediately aid, and restore Gaza and all of Palestine under one government.
Is is important for the UN to hear from word citizens that we want the UN to lead the way to peace. The General Assembly is now reviewing the use on unilateral veto powers of the US and four other Permanent Members of the UNSC. No single nation nor group of nations has the legitimate authority and power to lead the Israel-Palestine peace negotiations other than the United Nations. Furthermore, if the two parties can not come to an agreement, this 75 year old stalemate must be arbitrated by the UN, just as its actions in 1948 were an act of arbitration as the world body which facilitated the creation Israel out of the Palestinian Protectorate of Great Britain.
