[팩트 체크] 피터즈 (Alexander A Pieters, 1872-1958) 선교사
이 동영상에는 몇 가지 심각한 오류가 있다.
페터즈는 내가 1988년부터 관심을 가진 선교사였고, 오랫 동안 자료를 수집해 왔기 때문에, 바로 알 수 있었다. 사실 다음 주에 그에 관한 글을 발표하려고 준비 중이었다. 오류는 중대한 것이라 여기 쓴다.
1. 그의 조국은 우크라이나가 아니라 러시아였다. 어떤 자료를 근거로 우크라이나라고 하는지 모르겠는데, 당시 피터즈는 우크라이나 국경 강 건너편인 러시아령인 지금의 Dnipro에서 태어났다. 어릴 때 이름은 아이작 프름킨이었다.
박 교수님은 피터즈의 고향을 공개해 주기 바란다.
2. 피터즈는 불어를 할 줄 몰랐다.
유태인 피터즈는 어학의 천재로 어릴 때 집에서는 이디쉬어와 러시아어를 했고, 공립학교에서는 독일어, 라틴어, 그리스어를 공부했으며, 사립학교에서는 히브리어를 배웠다. 이후 필리핀에서 스페인어, 한국에서 한국어, 미국에서 영어를 배워 유창하게 말했다.
박교수님은 피터즈가 불어를 유창하게 했다는 증거를 제시해 주기 바란다.
3. 1902년 18;2의 경쟁에 밀려 한국에 오지 못한 게 아니다.
한국에서 권서 4년 생활을 하면서 한국어에 유창했고 <시편촬요>까지 번역했기 때문에, 그는 맥코믹 신학교에서 수석 졸업으로 구약학 교수로 남을 수 있었지만, 한국 선교에 지원했다. 그러나 갓 결혼하고 한국으로 오면 유대인으로서 미국 시민권을 얻지 못했기 때문에, 미국령인 필리핀으로 가서 일단 시민권을 언어야 했다. 그런데 2년 후 아펜젤러가 번역하러 가다가 선박 사고로 순직했기 때문에, 2년 기간을 채워서 시민권을 확보하였으므로 한국으로 이전했다.
박 교수님은 피터즈가 1902년 한국에 파송 받지 못한 이유가 경쟁 때문이었다는 증거를 제시해 주기 바란다.
4. 1911년 발간된 <구약젼셔> 번역에는 별로 참여하지 않았다.
영상에 나오는 대로 목회에 전념하며 전도에 헌신하며 다시 한국어를 배웠다. 1910년 번역이 완성된 첫 구약전서는 전주의 레이놀즈 목사가 주로 번역했다. 피터즈는 1938년 개역 구약전서 번역에 결정적으로 기여했다.
박 교수님은 피터즈가 1910년 구약 번역에 참여한 증거를 제시해 주기 바란다.
5. 영상 결론 부분에서도 다시 피터즈의 고국이 러시아의 침략을 받고 있다고 했는데, 피터즈의 고국은 러시아였으나, 미국 시민으로 국적을 바꾸었다. 그는 Russian Jew 미국인이었다.
자세한 내용은 다음 주에 발표하겠다. 비역사적 사실로 아름답게 꾸민다고 해서 감동을 주는 게 아니다.

“Who is Rev. Alexander Pieters? He’s the one who made it possible for us to read the Old Testament. But now we have forgotten him and his grave is abandoned. Is this the way the Korean church should treat its benefactor?”
Emeritus Prof. Park Jun-seo of Yonsei University issued this appeal during an interview with Kukmin Daily on November 27. In his hands were photos of Rev. Pieters’ lonely grave sites, which he himself had discovered.
Rev. Alexander Albert Pieters (Korean name: 피득 彼得, 1871∼1958) was the first translator of the Old Testament into Korean. He arrived in Korea as a colporteur, and translated the Psalms three years after he had begun learning Korean. His translation “Concise Psalms” is recognized as the first Korean translation of Old Testament contents. Pieters grew up in Russia, and fled to Nagasaki, Japan, to escape Russian oppression of the Jews. There he met God newly. He changed his last name to Pieters after the American missionary who baptized him, and came to Korea, dispatched by the United States Bible Society as colporteur.
Early this year while Prof. Park was visiting Fuller Theological Seminary in the U.S. for research, he began searching for Rev. Pieters’ grave after learning that there was a facility for retired missionaries in suburban Los Angeles. Park said, “There are many Korean churches in L.A., but when I asked around, I couldn’t find anyone who knew about Rev. Pieters, let alone where his grave was.”
Prof. Park searched online and found out that Rev. Pieters was buried in Mountain View Cemetery near Pasadena. So he went there in July with his son, who was staying in the States at the time. The management office did not know the exact spot of Pieters’ grave, just the general area where it was located. Under the strong July sun, Park used his hands to clean off the weed-covered gravestones, searching for the one with Pieters’ name. And finally he found it.
Park said he was so ashamed he could not raise his head, because the gravestone did not even recognize Pieters as a “Rev.” Nor did it reveal the fact the he had translated the Old Testament into Korean. During the interview, Park shared a photograph of another gravestone of a missionary who had translated the Bible into Armenian. It was clean, well managed, and the missionary’s achievement was listed on it.
Park said, “While the Korean church commemorates the quincentennial of the Reformation this year and cherishes Martin Luther, who translated the Latin Bible into German, the truth is we have forgotten Missionary Pieters, who brought the Old Testament to us for the first time. How would the Korean church have grown and experienced revival if it had not had the Bible?”

Park said he feels responsibility, as a scholar and lifelong teacher of the Old Testament, when Korean pastors who did not previously know about Pieters have asked, “Why didn’t you teach us about him?” Pieters translated the Old Testament, and also wrote lyrics for some of Korea’s popular hymns including “I Will Lift Up My Eyes To the Hills.” In addition, he planted ten local churches including Segok Church in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, and Naegok Church.

All this said, the reason why his life has not been known among Korean Christians is that his family members passed away before him, during his mission in Korea. His wife Elizabeth Campbell died at the age of 33, not long after arriving in Korea. Rev. Pieters was remarried, to Eva Field, a medical missionary at Severance Hospital, but she died of cancer in 1932. (Both women are buried in Yanghwajin Foreign Missionaries’ Cemetery in Korea.) After Rev. Pieters retired in 1941, he moved to Pasadena, California, and lived at a retired missionary home for the rest of his life. He passed away in 1958.

Upon returning to Korea, Prof. Park organized the “Rev. Pieters Commemoration Project” with his students. Park expressed the wish to place a commemoration stone by Rev. Pieters’ grave. He added that he also would like to post Pieters’ achievements at the graves of Elizabeth Campbell and Eva Field. Further, he is planning a lecture series on Rev. Pieters.
“I hope the Korean churches will give thanks to God for sending Rev. Pieters to this land, and not forget what Pieters’ did,” Park said. “I believe many churches and believers who love the Bible will join in our commemoration project.”
