Some 74% of Americans – including solid majorities of Republicans and Democrats – said the United States and its allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization should impose a no-fly zone in Ukraine, the poll found.

Russia is not Afghanistan. It has integrated air defenses. When you fly a plane over them they have the means of reaching you and killing you. Imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine means the same as waging a war to win aerial supremacy over Ukraine. That would entail:

— shooting down Russian aircraft

— bombing Russian ground-based anti-aircraft systems

— firing cruise missiles against Russia’s radar stations and airbases

— bombing Russian airbases from the air

Obviously the Russians are not going to allow you to wage war on them like this and turn their airbases and anti-aircraft sites into ash. Including because once you have established air supremacy there is no reason to not start using that control of the skies to bomb them with impunity. You’ve already done the work and paid the price to win the sky, why not claim the reward? In the American way of war aerial supremacy isn’t taken for its own sake, but to enable the second step of obliterating the enemy with airstrikes.

These people get presented with a poll like this and think of the questions before them as a ladder to express how intensely they are plugged into the official hysteria of the hour. Do I go for all the 5 options in the poll, or do I settle for just 4 today?
