Got it much quicker than estimated, would order from the same person again! No damage to the book even, looks like it was lightly read and only had very very light wear on some corners. Beautiful! And a very attractive cover as well... I was very happy when I found out this was required for my class :) Shallow, but I already was a fan of the cover's artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting narrative lacking analysis
Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2018
These papers offer an interesting description of various aspects of Japanese life through family, school, work, religion, politics, literature, music, housing, food, sports etc. The descriptive narrative informs but doesn’t greatly enlighten. Papers on discrimination against Buraku culture, and the cult of manga and anime, begin to explore more unique aspects of Japanese culture. But the overall result is a disappointingly bland treatment of a fascinating subject.
The roots of Japanese mentality, attitude and behaviour are not examined. The historical juxtaposition of delicacy with atrocity, of respect for age with adherence to reason, of a high code of honour with currently shameful, or formerly horrific suicidal consequences, of compliance to the point of mute obedience and emperor worship, of unassuaged offence to other ethnic nations – all these are fascinating elements of the recent history of Japanese culture. This collection fails to address these issues.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good overview, but perhaps narrow in perspective
Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2011
While this book does do a good overview of modern Japanese culture, going into depth on several selected themes and a separate topic in each chapter, I felt that the view point of the authors was quite rigid and sometimes quite dogmatic. In most conclusions, in the preface, and again and again throughout the book it is mentioned that such and such things are "multifaceted" and must be looked at through several "lenses" and that everything is dynamic and fragmented, etc. However, I found that these "lenses" the authors were using were consistently the lenses of sociologists and linguistic anthropologists. I have no disregard for these approaches, however I would have found the book much more intriguing and and sensible had an historical approach, a political approach, or even a psychological approach been included in some of the chapters. Modern Japanese culture is inherently tied to the historical and political aspects of the broader picture, so it was disappointing to see that a discussion of the culture's progression through the modern time was left out. Instead "modern" is treated as fixed and present.
Aside from these complaints, the authors did a fantastic job of providing a brief examination of modern culture while positing new view points on academically debated issues.

Shelves: non-fiction, japanology
This is the book on modern Japanese culture I have been looking for. It is more academic than some of the popular titles (a relief to me because I like to know why, rather than just what), but not so heavy as the really chunky tomes (Yes Cambridge History of Japan, I am talking about you). It is organised into 20 chapters, each is essentially an introductory text concerned with a particular aspect of Japanese culture and each written by a different author (one assumes an expert in that particular field). The sections conform to a similar format – an introduction, main body covering the salient points, a conclusion and list of footnotes with further reading – I may well be spending some time tracking down a few of the further reading articles from the particularly interesting sections.
The over all conclusions (view spoiler)
An extra star has been appended to my rating here for the quality of the artwork on the cover. It is quite beautiful, I wonder if there is a poster of it somewhere... (less)

Highlights for myself, the chapters on language, work, school, manga/anime (part of which is extended in the "exporting Japan's culture" chapter) and surprisingly housing. Those looking for politics would have more fun with Curtis' "The Logic of Japanese Politics".
Nice, short, sharp well-researched chapters with further reading lists a plenty. Good addition to my slowly growing Jap history/culture shelf. (less)

A really great book that introduces "Modern Japanese Culture" but by modern it means up until ~2006 (it was published in 2009). Nether-less it's still a great read and I'm very happy that I've read it. Do I recommend it? If you like Japan and you want to know more, why not? It's very interesting ☺️ (less)

Yoshio Sugimoto presents systematic introspection of Japanese culture through a multifaceted lens. The study integrates a series of literature compositions and conjectures by well-known intellects; diminishing the myth of Japan being a homogenous social order. Formerly know for its obstinate and inflexible cultural, religious and political principles; Japan amended its societal infrastructure integrating a secular and heterogeneous atmosphere whilst preserving its legacy and mores.

It was a quite interesting book, a good insight into modern Japanese culture, spanning over many topics, such as family life, music, work culture... It will never be the same as experiencing the culture hands on, of course, but it was a good introduction and overview.

(less)

This is one of the most comprehensive books I've ever read about 21st century Japan. For one, I love the coverage: language, political culture, music, housing culture, sports culture, leisure culture, religious culture, and school culture among many others. Aaaand what also makes this worth reading are the emerging paradigms and trends in analyzing Japan, its identity, its position in East Asia and the world, and Japan Studies in the 21st century.
I'd recommend this to the Japan specialist friends. :)) (less)

A comprehensive general overview on the background, development and future of modern Japanese culture.
There are chapters that I thought are inadequate, such as the one on sports culture - it does not include a more lengthy discussions on corporate athletes, which is how most athletes in Japan make a living.
