북한에 살고 있는 작가. ‘반딧불이’를 뜻하는 ‘반디’는 작가의 필명이다. 전체주의 체제 아래에서의 삶에 대한 일련의 이야기를 써서 『고발』이라는 제목으로 탈북자, 브로커 등 여러 사람을 통해 남한으로 원고를 반출시켰다. 일곱 편의 이야기가 실린 이 책으로 ‘북한의 솔제니친’이라 불리며 세계의 주목을 받고 있다.

영국 중부의 소도시 동커스터 출신으로 2009년 케임브리지 대학교 영문과를 졸업했다. 번역가가 되기로 결심한 후에 영국에 한국어를 전문으로 하는 번역자가 없다는 사실을 알고 독학으로 한국어를 배우기 시작해 2010년 런던 대학교 한국학 석사 과정에 입학했다. 2015년 런던 대학교에서 한국학으로 박사학위를 취득했으며 2016년 5월 한강의 소설 『채식주의자』 번역으로 세계 3대 문학상 중 하나인 맨부커 국제상을 한강과 공동으로 수상했다. 『채식주의자』외에 한강의 대표작 『소년이 온다(Human Acts)』와 북한에 살고 있는 작가 반디의 소설인 『고발(The Accusation)』을 번역했다. 아시아 문학을 다루는 비영리번역단체인 출판사 '틸티드 액시스 프레스(Tilted Axis Press)'를 직접 설립하였다.
Deborah Smith was born in 1987 in South Yorkshire, northern England. She began learning Korean at age 22, and has mainly translated books by Han Kang and Bae Suah. Tilted Axis Press, the company she founded in 2015 to publish translations from across Asia, has published books by Hwang Jungeun, Han Yujoo, Lee Hyemi, and Yu Miri, a South Korean citizen who writes in Japanese.
