Many recent studies of French politics have tended to concentrate on the French political system in isolation. Contemporary France aims to set the working of the French political system into its historical, social and economic context. The first section gives a succinct description of the main developments since 1944 in all major contexts - economy, society, domestic politics and foreign relations. The authors then analyse the economic, social and cultural structures of present-day France, and discuss the institutional framework of decision-making and the major political forces involved in it.

There are also chapters on French external and defence policy and on the education system, all of which are set in the context of the political system as a whole. Aimed primarily at students of European history and politics or of French society and culture, the book assumes little knowledge in the social sciences and will be readily accessible to beginners in this field.

4.0 out of 5 stars A thorough survey let down by a semi-literate, apparently unedited text.

A thorough survey let down by a semi-literate, apparently unedited text... This is such a pity since many of Helen Drake's judgements are sound and unconstrained by pussy-footing political correctness. (An honest appraisal of our nearest neighbour will always give offence.)
Here are two examples of clunking English, taken from page 137 and 125:
`Liberté - in this example, apparently derived from a subjective interpretation of what constitute (sic) a woman's freedom - has trumped égalité (the freedom for all to dress how they like), and has challenged Muslims to define the line (sic) dividing culture from religion.'
`Despite its aspirations to national solidarity and equality of treatment, French society is as typified as its European counterparts by the individualism that is so characteristic of a mass consumer society, where materialism is becoming ever more entrenched, and by the social inequalities and inequities of imperfect social policy.'
