Beyond the Two-State Solution, by Jonathan Kuttab, is a short introduction to the ongoing crisis in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Zionism and Palestinian Nationalism have been at loggerheads for over a century. Some thought the two-state solution would resolve the conflict between them. Kuttab explains that the two-state solution (that he supported) is no longer viable. He suggests that any solution be predicated on the basic existential needs of the two parties, needs he lays out in exceptional detail. He formulates a way forward for a 1-state solution that challenges both Zionism and Palestinian Nationalism. This book invites readers to begin a new conversation based on reality: two peoples will need to live together in some sort of unified state. It is balanced and accessible to neophytes and to experts alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best idea I’ve heardReviewed in the United States on 31 August 2024

I believe this author has laid out one of the best plans that would bring the most peace and least about of death to the region. He shows there is sympathy to be had for everyone and doesn’t get into who is right and wrong but who wants what and what has been happening. While I believe the situation is up to Palestinians and Israelis in what they do, western countries like mine are main blocks for peace and responsible outside Israel for the destruction. So I’d like my taxes to go into this over bombs and supporting an illegal occupation. The author knows this is no piece of cake but I think he did a very good job of addressing key issues for peace. Of course I said this just as someone who reads and talks to people from the area not as an expert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Settlements are the issueReviewed in Canada on 27 January 2026
Format: PaperbackVerified Purchase
Mr. Kuttab's essay here published as a book gives a short and succinct argument that settlements are the main reason a two state situation won't address the core issues of the two groups. His language is "maddeningly natural," as one of my friends said. A true democracy of equality, like what is in Canada. Is what's needed, not apartheid.
