The poverty, the hustling, the everyday struggles, the loan shark, the unfair gold boss, the unfair guy with the gold smelter and then you see their smiles, hear their laughter see them in their fun days just playing cricket and their lives just go on living on hope and faith that one day I'll make it big and get out of here...I wish all them them the very best that life can offer them

As a Chinese I find some of this a little disturbing - too much squalor, I'm sorry to say. But somehow the people's faces are still attractive and their smiles mesmerising. I won't (and can't) laugh at these people, I am humbled by their immense toughness and dignity. I ask myself, "Can I be like them? Can I be born into poverty and hardship and have that kind of dignity and grit?" India has a long way to go, but hey, dear Indian brothers and sisters, we are BOTH from thousand-year-old cultures and we both know time is on your side! Way to go India!

It's astonishing to see these people talk in decent English even being under the poverty line, doing these kinda work. I wish no human on earth gets a life like this, whoever is going through times, may you break free soon. Peace and love!

The story of the young gold digger who broke away from his tyranic boss & landlord to become his own boss, formed his own clan & found a roof over their head deserves a movie. He is so smart & knew he could do better than his boss, treat his own worker better for much better return on investment, find a better buyer, hire a taxi to get there quick. I bet he will rise to the top some day. However, the people surviving on the beach selling alcohol, I feel sorry for them because a solid roof over your head is the first step in the human hierarchy of need without a roof, there's no safety ^ you can't function properly plus selling alcohol which only brings more human misery, is a bad combination.

I’ve seen hundreds of documentaries on India on this platform and i must say this was unexpected and very well done. Of the 20 documentary channels I watch regularly this one does not typically have quality programs such as this one. This was really well done. . Great job to everybody involved!!!

The peoples shown in this documentary are all heroes. They have an exemplary fighting spirit and have the mental power to keep a smile amidst so many excruciating difficult circumstances. I pray that they succeed in lifting themselves out of poverty. Shame on the Indian elites who either ignore or exploit them. Shame on the so called biggest democracy in the world who can't even give the basic necessities to its own people.

Beautiful video. Uncut and real India exposed. So proud of these struggling people who also have a dream. Binded we stand divided we fall. Unless we understand deeply this crisis and support the low lying people no matter how greater next PM comes to power ( even 10 times the existing Modi) nothing will change. Sad that's the real truth about India. Sorry for those who feel patriotic only and consider high profile image to protect of self and the nation as priority.

I guess this is 2014, in the present days more than 11 million new houses are built for the ones who cannot afford. Not many die from hunger, in india we have a worse epidemic of people being not so productive but that's slowly vanishing as basic necessities are available to everyone

Instead of blaming others,we have to make a proper introspection.even after 76 years of independence if we see a lower strata in our society, that shows the failure of our political class.they did not perform their duties well.things can be improved if there is political will.these leaders go to other countries and see the facilities given to their citizens.still they fail to deliver such things to Indian citizens.we think that people are suffering because of their karma or fate. This philosophy is hindering our progress.progress of country is brought about by the development of all citizens.the government must work for that .

Amid the poverty, rat infested streets, open defecation
There is also
Serenity and smiles..
Love and laughter...
Good Samaritans next door helping each other...
Not bad compared to this sterile apartment block where an old man died a lonely death, and his corpse was discovered by "neighbours" only after the stench became unbearable.
Money will give you lots of walls
Walls to hide yourself from the world
Eventually the walls of your apartment becomes your coffin.

It's incredible that these people can survive even though their living conditions are worse than what cockroaches face in Western Europe. The gold digger was so happy with an "apartment" that looked like a sinkhole. Amazing how resilient they are. And it 100% makes you think twice about when you complain for minor inconveniences in life.

What i love most about these documentaries about other countries, no matter how remote they live. Wether its in Villages, tribes, wealthy, whatever, we all are more similar than different. A middle class western, or European family has the same daily struggles within your family. The wife getting mad at the husband for not doing his chores, getting kids ready for school, and kids pestering their busy moms while dad is 5ft away doing nothing. Moms and dads adoring their kids, spoiling them, and wanting the best for them.

As an Indian this is true but this is only 1 % part rest India is good ,fine people living healthy having decent and good homes earning well , educating their children ,
You all should wonder why indians who get good education are dominating world because all indians are sharp but they all didn't get that opportunities and condition so sad .
I wish India will surpass this things and will grow .
You all people from different countries should not laugh at this , living and earning and education is tough here but once you grow indians are unstoppable.

This old documentary came to light now but it still echoes the stories today. I love how they can speak English though I wonder how and despite their challenges, these are the stories that make India what it is today. I still believe that there are thousands and lakhs of stories like this. Pray that people are happy and content with whatever they have got. Rich or Poor.

India is all about suffering and struggle, the poor is getting poorer and the rich is getting richer.
The 2023 Multidimensional Poverty Index Report finds over a third of all poor people in the world live in South Asia—which is around 389 million people. India contributes significantly to this number, accounting for almost 70 percent of the increase in extreme poverty.

I am from the US. I admire the Indian people. They are much like people all over the world. Working hard to provide for their families. There are people living in poverty to ultra wealthy. Sadly the ultra wealthy are more hung up on acquiring more at the expense of everyone else. I am sure they are not all that way.
All deal with corrupt government, street criminals.
I don't understand the caste system. It appears it is designed to keep the poor, poor. I would love to visit some day.

I see a lot of hate towards the government in the comments. The documentary sheds light on life in a specific city, not the entire country, and the title may be misleading. People often leave their hometowns for big cities in pursuit of a better life, facing initial struggles that improve over time. The video emphasizes the struggle, overlooking eventual success. It's natural for those who are now wealthy to have faced hardships, common in developing economies where inherited wealth is scarce. If you study the life of an average person in New York, or Seoul, or Dubai you will see the same dark side.
Some criticize the government for not talking about these issues, however, consider this: would you willingly display your financial struggles to guests in your home? Presenting a positive image of India creates optimism about the economy, attracting investments that can improve quality of life. The people interviewed in this video share the same optimism and the 'CAN DO' attitude of the country. Why can't the comments section do the same?
It takes time for a country to develop economically, especially with so many different opinions. Despite its flaws, the government deserves credit for promoting positive attitudes which deserve some respect.

An interesting fact: before the British, India was a very wealthy country indeed, producing around 20% of the world's GDP. By the time the Brits left it was less than 2%, and a divided country. The British Divide and Rule method of governing deliberately broke society apart into muslims, hindus, Jains etc and the caste system was worse than ever.

Resilient people. With such a large population and so much competition it seems everyone is very dishonest and always trying to rip off each other for a very small amount. Hello friends, I'll like to thank the creator of this documentary. This will disturb any conscious person who lives in a developed country. i am of indian descent and it troubles me when I view the facts that have brought about these conditions as shown in the video. But taking into consideration that that land has been occupied for 1000 years by abrahamic forces and it's people have been stripped of all human dignity for the said period of time. I must say they're resilient because in approximately 70 years they have risen to a point where they are competing with countries who have over 1000 years of development including the lute and spoils from colonization. Currently there are those same forces who are working diligently to undermine those people and their culture. If they should survive for another 70 years, they will have the biggest economy on THIS planet without invading or stealing the resources of other nations. I'm proud to be of Indian descent. Jai HIND

True, there is still poverty here, but the situation has improved drastically in the last 10-15 years. Lot of people have been lifted from poverty and middle class is increasing day by day. Quality of life and standard of living has also improved. Ours is a country with a population of 1.4 billion and the vision and intent towards development has increased in recent years. No country can become rich or developed overnight. It takes time. By 2030s I'm sure we'll be in a much better position than we are today.

The thumbnail image could have been Seattle. In America instead of retrieving gold from sewers our tent dwellers cut catalytic converters off cars and sell them to foreign crime outfits for precious metal. Our government also regularly tears down the tent camps and the people just move somewhere nearby. As part of an "opium war" against America China ships tons of precursor chemicals to Mexico at cut-rate prices so tons of cheap highly addictive drugs fuel our high level of crime and homelessness. With China's animosity towards India I am surprised China hasn't flooded India with tons of cheap highly addictive drugs too. If the US shut it's borders to anything coming from Mexico probably 95% of our crime and homelessness would disappear in one year.

Interesting, but the essence of India is its superiority in its spirituality, on top of all the Integral Yoga from Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, Puducherry. Who of the westerners has read “Life Divine” by Sri Aurobindo? One sample of our future you find in Auroville. In the arts it is the Orissa dance which shows elegance never seen in the western world. There are other aspects in which India has not come out from colonial influence as adopting the English education infrastructure where the rich get the best education whereas in my country Germany we have copied the French system that from the cradle to the level of a professor all education in whatever field is cost free. And there is the partition made by the British, dividing India and weakening it. It will go, for sure.

If India would surpass China in manufacturing, it would have occurred already in the 20th C. long before China became a manufacturing powerhouse and the world’s second largest economy !
India labeled by the West as the world’s largest democracy, therefore it should have been the world’s second economic power by now ? However, China, still labeled by the West as a Communist Country, has an economy 5 times larger than that of India. It does not take a genius to understand that there are fundamentally differences between the 2 countries. Further, British colonization of India has left some legacies that are not quite positive for Indians especially those from the elite class, for example, never-ending debates at the expense of tangible implementation of project or actions, the multi-party political system of governance ( turned into “Querelle de Clochers” ), the British-educated or Western-educated privileged class vs the rest…, the unfair treatment of women etc…
In addition to having adequate INFRASTRUCTURE , a manufacturing powerhouse also needs the following:
-A well-developed supply chain for parts and components;
- A local production of affordable raw materials and construction materials;
- A well-trained and disciplined work force with hardworking ethics;
-A set of adopted governmental laws and their adequate implementation to facilitate industrial development and foreign investments;
- A provision of on-site housing in proximity to production plants for workers; and
-Implementation of measures peculiar to the Indian context, which is : Elimination of flagrant social injustice towards people of lower Caste and women. In India, it would be difficult to have a supervisor or manager originating from a lower Caste to oversee/manage an employee of a higher Caste. Further, India has many religious holidays and at times civil unrest triggered by hostility between different religious communities. Mr Modi’s (Le Maudit de l’ Inde) alienating policies towards the Muslims and the Sikhs certainly do not help establish social/national harmony within the country.
It took China 40 years to become a manufacturing powerhouse due to her very peculiar cultural/historical/philosophical context. India has quite a long way to go !
Just compare Indians and Chinese in Malaysia and Singapore (countries with decent percentages of these 2 races) and you'd find that the Chinese lead in all areas by very wide margin Most of the 10 riches man in each Asian country are Chinese ( Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Pilippine, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia and Cambodia) India cannot even build enough toilet as a human basic right for his people as the link provide here {what a shame} #opendefecation

Many poor persons are more happy and satisfied with their life than rich ones. But it is far from west capitalism thinking.

Everyone is nothing more than a bundle of energy. According to Einstein, energy created remains forever. Based on that reasoning, then our soul which constitutes that energy lives forever, in some other manifestation once it leaves the human body. When a person is living, a name is given to that person, say John Doe, when John Doe cease to exist, then one separates John from the body, it is more like, "take the body to cremation, or burial" ; John is no longer in the picture. Manifestation of energy is unique. Everyone experiences in a day, creative energy (Brahma), constructive energy (Vishnu) and destructive energy (Shiva); When air one breathes goes thru the nostrils, that energy is kindled, out comes beautiful music (beautiful vocal) or instruments that one hears, pleasing to ears; else, one hears cursing words coming from the same mouth that also can produce beautiful notes. Food for thought.

Those poor men using that mercury, they will all have mercury poisoning. But because they are of a low caste they are seen as nothing and deserving of this because of what they have done in a former life has deemed that they are born into a low caste.

The situation of Kolkata shown here is typical of many Indian cities. What are the reasons behind the situation? May be many.
1. People are losing interest in agriculture and village life. City Life with it's fake attractions and a modern lifestyle are too captivating for people without realising that the quality of life they get is worse in cities.
2. Lack of education. Kerala was once the most poor state in India. But later Kerala had the blessings of far-sighted communists, Christian missionaries and some Royal patronage to realise the status of a completely literate state in India. While communists fought for peasants and industrial workers, Churches ran schools for the backward caste children. When communists assumed power in Kerala, they focussed on education and healthcare. Keralites became educated at a time when the middle East nations were seeking workers for expansion of their economy. Malayalis were ready to latch on to the opportunity. Unfortunately for Kolkata, they did not have visionary communist leaders, and without Christianity, casteism within Hinduism kept people poor and miserable. It persists even today.
3. Corruption and politics. While the British did rob India of it's wealth, but some traitors have been siphoning off our wealth into tax havens. People like Vijay Malya and others who love licking white man's ass is one prime example. When country gets depleted of resources, it shows in the quality of life of it's common man.
4. Glorification for begging and freebies. Begging is a practice indirectly supported by society and religion in India. So people are glad to beg with children, as they get some grains from local PDS shop for free.
5. Gambling, drugs and alcohol. People are notorious for spending away whatever little they earn in pursuit of addictions. Later when they succumb to diseases or financial losses, they get trapped in loans.
However this is not the scenario in entire India. There are parts of India that are impressive. Hoping it would also be represented by this documentary producer.

The (Reserve Currency Privilege) that America and Europe enjoy made them rich while keeping other countries poor. Thanks to the Reserve Currency Privilege America and Europe have, they can print money or borrow money from local banks and use it to finance their own development. India and Africa don't have Reserve Currency Privilege, India and Africa cannot print money or borrow money from local banks to finance their development. If India and Africa don't earn enough USD or EUR from exporting, neither will be able to develop. No country should need the currency of another country to develop; this is colonization and slavery in another form.

Millions of acres of agriculture lands are left idle in their native villages. They could be doing agriculture in those lands at negligible rent and gain a decent living but they want to live this life for some reason. There's a severe shortage of farmers in the country but people are not interested in it. There's more than enough agricultural land available for all of them. People are giving lands for almost free of rent, these people could use that opportunity. But no, they don't want to. Agricultural labour are earning almost equal to that of a software engineer. Close to 30k rupees a month.

ccording to the 2023 Annual Homeless Assessment Report (AHAR), Part 1, released by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) on December 15, 2023, approximately 653,100 people were experiencing homelessness in the United States in 2023. This is a 12% increase from 2022, or about 70,650 more people. In 2022, HUD counted 582,000 Americans experiencing homelessness, which is about 18 per 10,000 people in the US. Our India is been looted by many European Countries but yet we grow in Culture and GDP. The information are not true

Tragic and Beautiful, I love the heroism and humour, but feel sad seeing people amongst the filth and bacteria and heavy metals and other poisons, suffering cumulative harm and inevitable longer term consequences. How do we capitalise on these human resources to raise living standards for All, before the increasing mass of humanity drags us all into an inescapable quagmire.

The greedy growers on the beach should have their special permission revoked also!
They are probably the biggest complainers to get the others bulldozed, why? Because they moved there first. So what, they were lucky to get special permission or else they would get moved on too. The lady talking about burning the others places is just pure evil. Like these people can afford to lose more. SMH.

Two thirds of the economy is unreported is so funny. So I guess that means they are only collecting a third of all the tax. India is just the best though in some ways. Even the bulldozers weren't all that bad in the end. You can live in parks in the uk if you want. Well for a year or so. Apparently. But India isn't the uk. It's so nuts. But it makes sense too. It's always nice weather so you don't strictly speaking, need a roof. Those guys didn't even have corrugated iron walls! Indian slums are an impressive thing. If left unchecked they simply turn into towns as the corrugated iron turns into bricks, then stairs until there is a town with streets and it's not shitty. Shops electric etc. These are the places that need preserving as the real estate speculators close in and declare them unsafe and suitable for eviction, demolition and then an apartment tower block. Especially more near to the center. So India is at threat of losing a crucial component of it's economy by delaying natural and organic urban development which is completely unguided by the government and free. To make hubs of activity that underpin most industries. They might be moved into somewhere worse and the economic connections that grew in that area are severed and progress is delayed again. It reminds me of Kowloon walled city. Made from the ground up by individuals to fill a block in Hong Kong with what was unquestionably, the most economically productive area in the city. To be replaced with a park. It's not smelly now but what a loss that was. It's a loss when a slum cleared. They would call working class areas in London "slums" for being full of the poor and justify it as "cleaning up the area" by evicting everyone and building everything all over again for richer people.

It’s 10 years old documentary but Modi government did many work for poor people. They gave almost 3 carore homes to poor people. Loans for small businesses, brought many manufacturers & other industries in India and it gave many people jobs. There is free helth facilities for poor & middle class. Nice & big Roads, electricity, network are now connected to even small villages far from cities. So many people are out of poverty. We are on right path.

Stereotypical portrait of India and the West always sees, the poverty, well India is not a 3rd world country, it has a middle class and a very wealthy class that westerners almost never see. So everybody thinks all Indians are struggling...I think I'll make a documentary about 'The Rich Side of India'...

All video makers on India consider India as a homogenous country gripped in poverty. That is wrong.India is a heterogenous federal country consisting of many states whose languages, culture, religious set up, political system, geography, food habits and rates of development are different. There are hundreds of languages and cultures. You cant compare North India with South India. Even within South India, each state has distinct features. There are many great cities and centres of software development like Bangalore city

Everyone smugly and self-righteously creates Universe 25. And then endlessly and endlessly and endlessly and endlessly and endlessly and endlessly complains that it exists. Logic dissonance much?
Universe 25 is an actual phenomenon. And no, you can't Personal Opinion away Universe 25 and its inevitable outcome.
Once Universe 25 has reached extinction phase, no one will be left.
The only real solution to Universe 25 is not to create it in the first place.

I am unclear if this was an interesting look at how poverty motivates us into doing anything to survive or a tragic look at how the poorest amongst us are treated worse than we would treat a feral dog. Watching the squatter's home being torn down while people are rushing to save what they can.....while seeing the lovely beachfront apartments in the distance....is unjustifiable. The state, in this world, is not supposed to create homelessness, even when those homes are made of tarps and pieces oof wood, but find those who cannot find better, for no fault of their own, somewhere safe to live. It is, indeed, a tragic look at India....and it has left me saddened and introspective and angry,

Why you call it a "Real India".
This is not even 0.0001% of India. Come to our villages, 60 to 70% of India's population lives in small towns, and directly or indirectly connected with the agriculture Industry.. Come to our Villages we will show you how the "Real India" looks like.
I am just making a point, there are lots of documentaries on this side of country, & I know how the perception being made in other parts of the world about India. So many countries with bad intentions use this as a tool to minimise tourism in India.
For example showing Philadelphia's drug addicts street and dirty roads doesn't mean that is "Real USA".
Our culture is Unique, Vibrant, all inclusive but due to invaders and colonisers we lost our precious time, money, democratic values & power. But, still after 1000yrs of invaders rule we are rising again from the ashes.. World will see what "Real India" looks like soon...

I am sure the document maker has not visited entire part of India. Every country has poor and illegal occupants. Why focus on few individuals and a migrant colony? There are many parts of India which are way developed. Why can't you show those? Defaming India for more number of views.... Visit Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai (many documentaries show other side of Mumbai i.e. the slums), New Delhi etc..

This type of bloggers don’t want to show the real life in India. They went to some slums and took the videos from there and show this is India.India is the fifth economy in the world. If you travel through America we can see lost of homeless people in the streets. That doesn’t mean America is like this. This people are jealousy about the growth of India. If you make any type of video ,you can’t stop the growth of India.India is one of the world power. In the list of 10 richest people in the world, five of them live in India.Go and take videos of real life in India.Don’t do this type of stupid videos.

India has the world's fifth largest economy. Yet the average Indian is quite poor. Too much poverty in India. GDP per capita: $2,850 (nominal; 2024 est.) $9,890 (PPP; 2024 est.) Source: Economy of India, Wikipedia

This isn't the general lufe in India. More than 60% of the country resides in rural areas, and condition in rural India is much better than the slums. What west shows as real India would not represent even 1% of Indians

Whoever has made this documentary has only repeated the same old stuff & recorded those laborers living in slums in the cities. I do not agree that this is the real India. Come to rural India. In this video he has shown Kolkata which has been the commercial capital of India for centuries. There was an era when Kolkata was one of the most modern cities of India. Since the Bengali people adopted communist socialist ideology, companies refused to invest in West Bengal and over time Kolkata was deliberately made poor compared to other cities in India.

You have did little mistake to covering the footpath, I'm from kolkata according my knowledge this video documented surely before 2011. The ruling party TMC (you can see in the video 16:26 where they begging vote from public written on wall) used to print blue and white colour on footpath. But in your video that you are showing it is not current footpath. Of course in india there are rich premises poor, good premises bad. isn't it one-sided and motivated?! Ohh my god election is coming.
