"Kirsten Miller has that rare ability to take a serious subject and make it very, very funny. I enjoyed this novel and you will too."--James Patterson

The provocative and hilarious summer read that will have book lovers cheering and everyone talking! Kirsten Miller, author of The Change, brings us a bracing, wildly entertaining satire about a small Southern town, a pitched battle over banned books, and a little lending library that changes everything.

Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books--none of which she's actually read. To replace the "pornographic" books she's challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she's sure the town's readers need.

What Lula doesn't know is that a local troublemaker has stolen her wholesome books, removed their dust jackets, and restocked Lula's library with banned books: literary classics, gay romances, Black history, witchy spell books, Judy Blume novels, and more. One by one, neighbors who borrow books from Lula Dean's library find their lives changed in unexpected ways. Finally, one of Lula Dean's enemies discovers the library and decides to turn the tables on her, just as Lula and Beverly are running against each other to replace the town's disgraced mayor.

That's when all the townspeople who've been borrowing from Lula's library begin to reveal themselves. That's when the showdown that's been brewing between Beverly and Lula will roil the whole town...and change it forever.

Kirsten Miller

Kirsten Miller grew up in a small town in the mountains of North Carolina. At seventeen, she left for college in New York City, where she lives to this day. Kirsten's latest novel, Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books, is a side-splitting satire that takes on some of the most controversial issues of our day. Her first adult novel, The Change, was a Good Morning America Book Club pick for May 2022. Kirsten is also the author of over a dozen middle grade and YA novels, including the acclaimed Kiki Strike books, (which tell the tale of the delinquent girl geniuses who keep Manhattan safe), and How to Lead a Life of Crime. She is not the Kirsten Miller who wrote All That Is Left (which sometimes appears on the list of the books she's written), but she assumes that Kirsten is lovely and talented.

This was so clever and made a statement - it is so easy to get caught up in things even when our logic tells us different. As a means of demonstrating how easy people are led and turned against anything different this was very well done. It demonstrated how even good people can do the wrong thing and forget they have choices, that decisions must be based on knowledge.
However, none of the characters were likeable and connecting to the story was driven only by plot and occasionally it was difficult to remember who was who. At times, they seemed so remote and colourless despite the actions. But, in saying this I must repeat that this was a very clever use by the author to remind us of the strength of books and more, it was also a reminder of how important the past is and how much we can learn from it if we are open to it.
Difficult to review but all the same this was excellent reading for the content alone.

I loved this book! A stupid woman with a grudge starts a campaign to ban books she thinks are unsuitable. One young woman is going to turn the tables in the most perfect way. I laughed out loud. (Don't read this in a public place...) The first chapter almost put me off because I don't like bad language but I'm so glad I kept going. This was the best book I've read in ages.

Lula Dean has decided to cleanse her town’s reading habits. All banned books have been removed from libraries and public spaces, and only books that have been deemed appropriate by Lula are to be read. The townspeople stand up and cause a revolution!

This was a really enjoyable audiobook listen - so much so, I now need to get the paperback copy for my shelf! The characters came alive, I laughed, and I found the storyline enjoyable and relatable. Definitely recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and heartwarming book about books!Reviewed in Australia on 20 July 2024

4.5 stars.

In Troy, Georgia, Lula Dean has decided to cleanse the town’s reading habits. All banned books have been removed from public spaces, and the townspeople are only allowed to read books Lula has deemed ‘appropriate’. But a small group refuse to be told what they can and can’t read. The revolution is coming …

I’ve always been attracted to books about books, and this was why I picked up this book. I didn’t expect the story to be as prominent as it was, so I’m glad to have found this book and I’d recommend this to everyone!

It was interesting to see that Lula Dean didn’t actually get much air time in the book even though the title was based on her. I’m glad she didn’t though, because she wasn’t a nice person. Beverly Underwood was the super mum and unsung hero in the story, and Lindsay was pretty much the revolution kickstarter!

I loved seeing how each person interacted with the books they ‘chose’ (or stumble into) in the story. In general, I love the idea that there’s a perfect book for everyone, if they just know to stop and look.

This was such a heartwarming story, full of social commentaries about book banning, restrictions and inclusions. I think everyone should read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous satire on the serious issue of book banningReviewed in Canada on 12 July 2024

The very serious subject of book banning is handled in this satirical novel that is sometimes downright hilarious but at other times is frightening or sad. Anyone who loves books will appreciate the reverence that the author conveys for all books. I loved both the way the story progressed and the author’s capturing of the characters in a small southern town. This is a thought provoking book that I wish more people would read and be open to its message.

What to say about this book?
Laugh out loud funny! Sweet! Nasty! Relevant! Important! Controversial! Truly entertaining! A must-read!

I loved everything about this one. From the small-town gossipy vibe to the small-town heroes trying to change their world through books!!!!!

Lula Dean does not want her town infected by bad books. She’s on a one-woman mission to rid the town of all the books that don’t hold up to her wholesome mindset. She and her mindless cronies take all controversial books from every library in town. She puts only Lula-approved ones in her little library for the people to read and learn from. The town will thank her she’s sure.

Unbeknownst to her, the books are replaced by the very books that were banned with her book covers covering up the crime. Each person who reads one of these banned books has an awakening of sorts and learns what it means to walk in someone else’s shoes.

This book is full of outrageous characters that I loved. So relevant to our unfortunate time of “if it’s not right for me it’s not right for you society.” This book will have you cheering and crying.

Books can literally change lives and this book about the power of books proves just that.

Highly recommend!

I don’t even know how to start this review on Miller’s rocking laugh out loud satire on what used to be considered southern prejudicial fears. The book banning, gay bashing, race battering, redneck, confederate flag flying people of the fictional southern town of Troy, Georgia, are ripe with such bias beliefs. Lula’s Little Library, set right outside her own home, just might convince people what wholesome reading is all about - so Lula Dean believes.

Miller writes a fabulously funny, tongue-in-cheek, satirical story to paint a picture of how ridiculous these areas of worry really are. Her humor is hilariously sharp and to the point as Lula Dean, a widow with twins she hasn’t seen since they graduated from high school, decides not only does she know what is best for the people in her town, but she is going to run for mayor and remove the rubbish and craziness right out of Troy, Georgia. I mean, really, a gay theatre teacher and, well, recruiting in the same high school she graduated from. Seriously, he has got to go. Meanwhile she is determined to get all the books that cause people to turn gay or start drinking or living with value systems she doesn’t even recognize, out of the town’s libraries. So she forms a committee of people who think like she does and she calls them the Concerned Parent’s Committee.

This is a light hearted, dead serious, tale of Lula Dean and of Beverly Underwood as the two rumble in the bid for town mayor. Beverly serves on the school board, bakes casseroles for families in need, and is known as a pillar in the community. While Lula Dean is none of those things. But, she has a plan to fix her town, the people in it, and most importantly their way of thinking.

Fair warning, the shock value of some of the language was almost too much but gut your way through it to read this eye opening, delicious satire on the fears some people have and the control they are determined to use over others. A very timely book to counteract the fear mongering in today’s society. And a very personal book as I have faced book banning in my professional life as a secondary school librarian. Be sure to read the author’s notes. Four stars for this must read book!

In Kirsten Miller’s first adult satire novel, she takes on controversial issues of our day. You go, girl! She’s authored a dozen middle-grade and YA novels and has been a Good Morning America Book Club pick.

Her story takes place in the Southern Baptist, evangelical, tiny town of Troy, Georgia. Twenty-year-old Ronnie Childers works at Piggly Wiggly and enjoys a good trip, trippin’ on shrooms. His philosophy is “The world would be a much better place if more folks stepped out of the boxes, they’d come packed in and opened their minds to the mysteries of the universe.”

One day at two AM Ronnie is unexpectedly reunited with a school gal-chum who finds him stoned on a park bench. In his altered state, he believes twenty-one-year-old Lindsay Underwood, is an angel. Lindsay wrangles him to join her to “cause some trouble.” It just so happens Ronnie’s motto is “Never turn your nose up at trouble,” so he tags along with her to Lula’s Little Library, a free book exchange. He follows her orders to replace Lula’s ineffectual books with the banned books in Lindsay’s suitcase. He’s then instructed to put the dust jackets from Lula’s Library on the replaced books. Get it? Switcheroo. New book, using an old dust jacket so people who get a book think it’s the book that matches the dust jacket.

Lindsay Underwood is rich and gay with a devilish social justice streak. Because Lindsay has a great relationship with her parents, she’s decided not to finish her college semester. Instead, she’s helping her mother, Beverly, fight book banning with “a scary as hell,” Lula Dean at the helm.

After high school Lula and Beverly lived half a mile apart for twenty-five years. Beverly was head of the school board and a pillar of the Troy community and Lula was known as the town crank. Folks pitied Lula when she became a widow and her kids moved away. You’d think she would have softened, but Lula was dead set on punishing the world for ignoring her. Most of her efforts never paid off. But then it happened. Lula discovered an inappropriate book in the baking section of the local library. She became famous throughout the state within one month. Lula found her calling and rebranded herself as a righteous crusader. And what’s worse, she recruited a group of like-minded residents.

The theme is about book-banning zealots. The author has a first-rate talent for inducing out-loud laughter and being provocative. Lula Dean’s Little Library Of Banned Books is fictional but book-banning exists right now! While reading this, I was satiated with unadulterated fun, and rooting for the good guys. I love happy endings!...Just what to expect from fiction at its best. But when you’re finished, pass this book on to your friends...before it too is on the banned book list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important book, delightful readReviewed in the United States on 3 August 2024

Lula Dean's Little Library of Banned Books is a masterpiece. Every word is thoughtfully curated, and every character has had life breathed into them. Many of the characters take their own hero's journey and they experience it like a hero: the hard way; often against their will and at a cost to themselves, their beliefs and their comfort; but to a much better outcome -- for themselves and for the greater good.

The stories are at once hilarious, sad, insightful, and a little scary, knowing the majority voice only needs to come from a few of the wrong mouths, for this situation to go from the bad place it is currently in, to a much worse one, at everyone's expense.

Kirsten Miller has a masterful way of illustrating her point without it ever seeming like a lecture, or a doomsday prophesy. She lets her stories - fictional, but so real - make their own case.

It was a wonderful read, from the first sentence. I had started recommending it even before I finished it. I look forward to reading much more of her work.

Lula Dean’s library of banned books is great story of the effect books can have on a person, a family and even a whole community. It is an easy read with an important message. It can be a little slow at times and the characters could be a little better developed, but everyone should read this book!
