Who we are
Korea Future is an independent non-profit, non-governmental organisation whose mission is to investigate human rights violations in North Korea to support accountability for perpetrators and accelerate justice for victims
We were established in 2017 to advance a moment where every North Korean can claim their inalienable right to justice. To realise this vision, we investigate, document, and preserve evidence of human rights violations, including the roles of individual perpetrators and the structures of responsible state organisations. Guided by international human rights law, we use our information to report on egregious violations and provide analytical and evidentiary support to local, national, and international justice and accountability actors. To further combat injustice, we build the capacities of rights-holders in the diaspora, particularly women and those creating solutions for a just future. Our work is guided by our foundational values.
What we do
Investigate
We investigate, document, and preserve evidence of human rights violations and the identities of individual victims, perpetrators, and state organisations.
Our investigation process concentrates on primary interviews with survivors, witnesses, and perpetrators of human rights violations; the collection of digital and physical materials associated with or created by perpetrators and state organisations; and collaborations with exiled partners. Once evidence has been gathered, we carry out rigorous analyses that are guided by international human rights law to identify human rights violations, victims, perpetrators, and the extent of responsibility attributable to government officials and entities. We then archive our evidence where it is categorised, cross-referenced, and assigned relationships with existing data to establish and uncover wider patterns and linkages.
Advocate
We provide evidence and analyses to global actors in support of their pursuit of justice and accountability, and we make select information publicly available.
In situations where our work can accelerate local, national, or international justice, we provide evidentiary and analytical materials to support a wide range of global actors and mechanisms. We also make significant collections of information publicly available through databases, reports, and events to assist legal actors, human rights defenders, and others who pursue justice in their work.
Support
We build the capacities of individuals and organisations within the diaspora to realise long-term justice in its many different forms.
Our team implements targeted capacity building projects within the diaspora to challenge the legacies of injustice and foster the abilities of local rights-holders to create solutions for a just future. Projects cover a range of issues—from transitional justice to the participation and leadership of young women in human rights organisations—and are designed to be sustainable and locally-led.
