5.0 out of 5 stars Best cultural guidebook to China I've readReviewed in the United States on February 25, 2011

Note: I've been living in Shanghai for four years.

This is a first-time or temporary resident's guide to life in China, covering some history and cultural issues and focusing on what such residents will probably spend most of their time doing: working, eating, exploring China and the Chinese, learning the language, and just socializing. There's a brief section on language, which helpfully explains why Chinese is so hard to learn. The book is also extremely up-to-date, which is important in a country that changes so rapidly.

This little book is without a doubt the most helpful of any of the introductions to life in China that I've had the chance to read. It has a much better section on Chinese culture than others I've run into, highlighting cultural aspects (such as guanxi and courtyard culture) that can really cause problems for a clueless Westerner. The material is also very well organized. The section on business is concise and very helpful, even if you aren't a regular businessperson, and the little `Chinese Culture Quiz' at the end is fun and integrates a lot of concepts from the book. I would definitely recommend this as a first stop for anyone coming to China for temporary or short-term work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything You NEED to know and more!Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2010

I read "Culture Shock : China" before my first visit to the Middle Kingdom. Anything and everything shocking was revealed to me before my visit. True, it was still a fresh, new, and exciting experience even with all the hints I got from this book. Most people who aren't going far off the beaten path, will never even experience allot of what's discussed in the book. Most will be in cities or nice hotels. I took the road less traveled. No joke. So I witnessed every ounce of culture mentioned. I lived on a farm and ate local food only... I met children and people of all ages and had someone to translate the whole time. I found the tips made me easier to fit in but, the people so willing to accept me as I was.

Cities visited.... Xi'an, Baoji, Beijing... some rural cities in between. I'd love to go back someday. If you are planning on going. Get this book! You will not regret it. The whole series is extremely valuable.

Perhaps this is worth reading before a first trip to China. Parts seemed repetitive. The language section was not very useful without tones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read BEFORE you make a single travel arrangementReviewed in the United States on May 13, 2008

Cultureshock covers most if not all the content of about 3 other books I've read on traveling to china. Had I read this first I would have not made some of my initial mistakes in arranging travel.

I preferred the older version...more info, better organized. The guy got a lot of flack for writing it, but China was also a different place a decade ago (really).

I bought the Kindle version of this book only to discover that it is merely a summary of it. Only a few pages. Amazon should indicate that the Kindle version is NOT the real book.

This book has many interesting chapters, the author is knowledgeable there a valuable information in his book. Especially when I read about the history of china, in this chapter the author started to talk about the emergence of the civilization and ended up with architectural achievements of China, there is a lot of pictures that related to the topics which can help the reader to have a better understanding and make them more involve in what they read, also this book would be a good reference for people who like to discover about the culture and other civilization. Actually provides me further information about China. I recommend people to read this great book because the written way is attractive the information is valuable. (less)

This book is clearly written for the tidal wave of Western businessmen/women who are flocking to China's aggressive economy. For me, a traveler to China, the information was no less interesting, or less useful for providing context to the things I experienced on my trip. I'd recommend this book for anyone hoping to get a practical handle on the changing face of China. This isn't a political or social book - it just gives you hints about what Chinese people will expect when they interact with you. And, if nothing else, it's a really easy read. :) (less)

Culture Shock! China is an easy, straightforward read. It definitely has a lot of good information in it about China. However there are some major flaws. China has undergone some major changes in the 22 years since this book was published, so a good deal of the information seems outdated. As with anything this short trying to be somewhat definitive, there are a lot of broad sweeping generalizations.

Nevertheless, it seems like a good intro to China and it has me feeling a little more prepared for my trip in 3 weeks! (less)

This series does a great job of helping the reader prepare for an upcoming trip to a foreign country. I had read about most things that I encountered in terms of customs, behavior, money, food, how foreigners are viewed, etc. before I arrived. This helped make some of these things less surprising as I had a little bit of insight into the hows and whys of them. Didn't always make sense, but that's what makes travel interesting. (less)

I remember reading quite a bit of this one, and I think the info was helpful to me at the time, or at least gave me some context/helped me be a little bit more informed before going on a trip to China (which was actually my first trip out of the country--and without parents!)

Some interesting content. Seems a bit dated and too heavily focused on people going there to hammer out business deals.
