Dear Koreanists,
I am one of the organizers of Seoul Socrates Cafe - a group that meets monthly to discuss various philosophical issues related to Korea. On Sunday 19th at 4pm, I will be leading a discussion titled, "Morality and Sin in 21st Century Korea".
The link for the event is in the comments below. You can also find Seoul Socrates Cafe on Facebook, Insta, and all those other places. Feel free to get in touch if the topic or the group interests you. And no need to worry about whether you've watched Hellbound or not; I think the question of what constitutes 'moral' behavior in the modern age applies to us all.
"The recent chart-topping drama Hellbound captivated audiences worldwide with its story of vengeful demons coming to Earth to exact punishment on those guilty of sin. In real life South Korea, a world characterized by growing individualism and existentialism and a struggle between tradition and modernity, where does one find one's morality? Does anything really count as sin anymore? How do we determine what acts are good? Or are we just literally left to our own devices? Our discussion explores those ideas."
