Arundhati Roy, born on November 24, 1961, in Shillong, India, is a celebrated author and activist whose works intertwine art and advocacy. She rose to global prominence with her debut novel, The God of Small Things (1997), a semi-autobiographical tale that won the Booker Prize. Set in Kerala, India, the novel explores themes of caste, forbidden love, and family, capturing the socio-political fabric of 20th-century India. This literary triumph established her as a voice for the voiceless, merging storytelling with powerful commentary on inequality.
After her literary success, Roy turned her focus to activism, becoming an outspoken critic of globalization, environmental destruction, and human rights abuses. Her 2002 essay collection, Power Politics, highlighted the consequences of corporate-driven development in India. Through works like Field Notes on Democracy (2009), she has consistently advocated for systemic change, championing the marginalized and envisioning a more just world. Her words, like the quote above, reflect her unwavering belief in progress and transformation.
Arundhati Roy's vision of "another world" has inspired millions globally, bridging literature and activism. Her unique ability to blend poetic expression with critical thought positions her as a leading figure in modern intellectual discourse. She remains a beacon of hope for social and environmental justice

so many tiggered people here. yes, she is an academic but has proved her bonafides as a true radical over and over. She has lived with naxalites and championed their cause at great personal risk. Her relentless criticism of the caste system challenges one of the unjust bedrocks of Hindu Indian society itself. She is courage. A remarkable woman.

Ree Banerji - I am not sure whether you are naive, ignorant or coming from a privileged background oblivious to real world problems. If you want rosy pictures and want to close your eyes to real problems, please go read poetry or romantic fiction. Arundhati Roy is a serious writer! Not for weak hearted, living in wonderland people, who close their eyes to the dirty, unfair, unequal world around them and are stubborn to see what discrimination does to people who are oppressed!

Zu Ni Why is everyone so bothered about what appears to be a Hindu problem. Every human society has some form of discrimination. What so big deal in writing about it. There are far too many better things to read and write about in this limited span we are given. But then that needs true talent

Ree Banerji please go ahead and show us your true talent. Or is it limited to criticizing people like Roy who actually take the trouble to try and do something about real problems that affect the lives of millions of Indians? Just because its a so-called 'Hindu' problem, addressing it doesn't take talent? Her name will live on while yours will long be forgotten, my friend 🙂

Suresh Nair who cares about anyones name being remembered or forgotten. You can write about a xyz community's problem living in a shell - Thinking in fictional world that problem don't exist in other communities. Communities are here to stay and all communities have some or other form of discrimination. Just grow up man and get a life. Attraction between two humans transcends the power of communities. Write about that how inspite of rampant discrimination the forces of attraction pushes couples to overcome the crutch of communities that plagues so many loveless people. She could have chosen to write about positive powerful force of love rather than the crippling discrimination that propels the formation of a community. But then the book was from a weak mind, that part was clear - a mind that came across discrimination & was not strong enuff to rise above it.

You blather a lot. Roy writes about, speaks about and acts on what she cares about, and rightly so. Many of us deservedly admire her for it. If you value something else, write about it yourself instead of using it as a stick to beat people with because they don't. If what you write is good enough, some of us may even bother to read it. If you do eventually write, cut down on the blather.

Can't stand up in face of logic. Instead of developing what was handed by our ancestors with a positive mindset, write about their weakness to pander to western sensibilities for some peanut money. You or for that matter the subject is not worth getting personal. So I will refrain. Just sick minds that need to heal.

Logic, sure 🙂
Whatever keeps you on your little self-satisfied and quite useless journey of doing nothing but pointing the finger at others who do.

Zu Ni ,we need serious critic's, any system needs fair and fears oppistion, otherwise system will not enhance and over a period it becomes autocratic and autonomous. She can't do चमचागिरी, this is very innate quality to rise above such corrupt system and voicing for underprivileged with her powerfull literary audacity and it's over 30 years.
She is a women,so opponents fear even more in a men dominated arrogance.
She is beautiful, her curly hairs, her dress sense, in one word a DEMEANOR,
I am 1961 born and single , Arundathi is also 1961 born,
If she is single and want to marry, I will be token number 1, will accept with my whole and soul heartedly,...... it's a joke but who knows..haha...., trial cost nothing.

I love people who fight against the odds they are fearless amd it is not easy you can be discarded often like some of the comments here and also by the powerful but that is the challenge. Keep it up Arundhati as Goliath always comes down

This photo is from the set of " in which Annie gives it those ones" - where she plays the role of a student " Radha " . This movie won a couple of awards. Some know it as Shah Rukh Khan 's first movie, when he was still a student at Jamia
