Since journalist Lucy Aharish called on fellow Arab citizens of Israel to exercise their democratic right and vote in the upcoming elections, she has faced a wave of violent verbal attacks from loud and extreme right-wing voices. Today, journalists from Channel 14 joined in as well.
It is deeply troubling that parts of Israel’s political right have turned into a public platform for racism — rejecting citizens because of their origin or skin color.
And yes, this is racism. It is also a result of years of extreme-right politics that have weakened Israeli society across the board.
Lucy Aharish was among the first to speak clearly to the world in English from an Israeli studio after the Hamas terror attack, explaining that Israel was facing a brutal terrorist assault — while many government ministers were silent. She cried on air when the death in captivity of soldier Noa Marciano became known. Lucy gave voice to the emotions of Israeli citizens in moments when political leaders could not.
Israel is fortunate to have Lucy Aharish. May her call for Arab citizens of Israel to participate fully in democracy be realized. May we have many more voices like hers.
Inshallah.
לוסי אהריש Lucy Aharish

She and her voice is exactly what will save Israel from the right-wing, fascist government. I’ve been to Israel 7 times and have experienced how Arabs are treated as second-class citizens. I have family in Tel Aviv who are protesting in the streets.
Ethnic cleansing is a crime.

In the same breath Lucy has also received a huge wave of support in opposition to the verbal attacks which is a shame they exist in the first place... but its a free country and people are allowed to have an opinion regardless of what it might be (As long as no one is physically hurt) Personally I think she is one of the most important and sane voices in Israel ..

There can't be two nations in one Nation State, that's why we, Jews, had to create a new one for us. Israel is in fact a binational state which has a demographic problem. That prevents it from giving its citizenship to East Jerusalem, Gaza and Judea-Samaria.
This problem has to be dealt with seriously, and not just called by names like "racism".

When I was a kid, we would comment about how Israel was always 10 years behind the US: in music, in fads, lingo and other popular trends. Nowadays segments of Israel copy political negatives from the US: some rhetoric is similar to the political right in the US, Bibi is a Trump wannabe, channel 14 wants to be Fox News.
Instead, how about drawing inspiration from the home-grown Eshkols, Meirs, Sharons, (and others) of history rather than US oddballs?

Being a light unto the nations requires full compassion and humanity. Lucy and people like her should be supported by all who want to build the dream of a modern democratic Jewish state which will serve the world as a beacon of true Jewish values.

From the comments it is evident that so many people are missing what the protests are about. The article opens with saying that she is urging fellow Arabs to "exercise their democratic right to vote". She is not saying they aren't allowed to vote! As I understand it these protests are largely about the violent crime wave being ignored in the Arab communities, and calling for Ben Gvir to be fired. Are they not?
Thank you Lucy for speaking up. After Oct 8 I hung onto your every word!! Especially your interview with Bari Weiss!

Lucy Aharish has been my hero ever since October 8 when she reported about the October 7th attack saying that Israel would rise from these attacks and be stronger than ever. I needed to hear that. I think we all did. She worked tirelessly througout the war to bring the kidnapped women, children and men, home where they belonged. And yes, she stands up for the Arab community, currently suffereing from internal violence, clearly in need of government intervention. A small army of detectives, police, social workers, psychologists and educators are needed to get to the bottom of this. It is hard to understand why the problem is being ignored by the present government. She is right to tell the Arab-Israeli community to vote. Votes are powerful and may buy the Arab community the intervention they need. We all owe this remarable woman a debt of gratitute for her unending loyalthy to the welfare of all Israel's citizens and for her courage to call out wrongs when she sees them. Lucy, if you are reading this, thank you for being you. Never stop!

The real hope for Israel is for Israel’s Arab and non-Jewish citizens to participate fully in Israel’s democracy and exercise their right to vote. I never understood the Arab boycott of voting. You only have any hope to change things by voting.

Israeli Arabs have, at least for now, greater political rights than any other Middle Eastern country. To not use their vote is absolutely crazy and plays right into the hands of Netanyahu and his extremist enablers.

Google English may not be reliable for this situation. That said, the report I got is that one Ch 14 analyst made a verbal racist comment about Lucy Aharish's "arabness". Evil and disgusting. The comment was not made on air or on social media. The only evidence of it is a Haaretz opinion piece behind a firewall. Unless the guy confesses, or somebody caught him on video, it's not clear what the station can do about it other than tell him he's a mangy dog and he better stop before he does something that's legally actionable.
To her credit, Aharish has sued in court when she could. The perpetrators have settled out of court and kept the details secret.
