This book traces the origins and transformations of a people-the Zainichi, or Koreans “residing in Japan.” Using a wide range of arguments and evidence-historical and comparative, political and social, literary and pop-cultural-John Lie reveals the social and historical conditions that gave rise to Zainichi identity, while exploring its vicissitudes and complexity. In the process he sheds light on the vexing topics of diaspora, migration, identity, and group formation.

For people who want a general overview of Zainichi Koreans with an emphasis on Zainichi literature, then this is the perfect book for them.

Constructed more as a series of essays dealing with ideologies and historiography, the book looks into what makes the postcolonial identity and concludes the way social scientists talk about them is somewhat wrong. It contests the received historiography of Zainichi Koreans as pure victims when some had joined the colonial side. Likewise, it questions the various modes of what the writer calls "diasporic nationalism" the Zainichi Koreans have gone through by discussing novels and other forms of popular media. Essentialism is not easy to control. Neither is multiculturalism or universalism which might even devolve into essentialism -- something Spivak was concerned about when she wrote "Can the subaltern speak?". There's a lot of discussion on how people are supposed to see the history and colonialism of Japan and speculates that this will never end.

The book is written by someone who is sympathetic to them and still remain critical about what is being talked. The concluding chapter discusses the theses especially on how diasporas are indeed important to nationalisms, but I find the section on academic reflection quite provoking and insightful. How can we know everything if we have never shared their pain? And yet, us academics write as if we know. Such is the nature of literature on subalterns like the Zainichi Koreans. It takes a lot of bravery to go beyond liberal platitudes and truly empathize with the subalterns as they struggle to make sense of what their postcolonial identity should be.

Not that this book is necessarily bad, but I do feel duped by it. I was looking forward to a somewhat comprehensive history about Koreans in Japan, and what I got instead was several summaries of novels written by Koreans.

A fascinating, refreshing, and comprehensive investigation of Zainichi identity formation, through a non-essentialist and non-nationalist lens.

Good overview and nuanced analysis of the contemporary identities and consciousness of zainichi population in Japan. A lot of psychological analysis is based on literary works and intellectuals' writings. It does give snippets of historical backgrounds, but it is not the strength of the book. The author establishes such concepts as Zainichi ideology and post-Zainichi ideology.

3. 평론 (Critique)

<한계 및 논쟁점>
