성석제(成碩濟, 1960년 7월 5일~)는 대한민국의 시인, 소설가이다.[1]

생애

경상북도 상주시에서 태어났으며, 초등학교 시절을 고향에서 보내고 1974년에 서울로 이사했다.[2] 경신고등학교와 연세대학교 법학과를 졸업하였으며, 연세대학교 재학 시절 문학 동아리인 "연세문학회"에서 활동하였다. 1986년 6월 문학사상의 시 부문에서 신인상을 받아 등단하였다.

1991년 첫 시집 《낯선 길에 묻다》를 펴냈다. 1994년 소설집 《그곳에는 어처구니들이 산다》를 펴내면서 소설을 쓰기 시작했다. 특히 1995년 계간 《문학동네》에 단편소설 <내 인생의 마지막 4.5초>을 발표함으로써 주목을 받았다. 1996년 첫 소설집 《새가 되었네》(강출판사)를 펴 냈다.

해학과 풍자, 과장, 익살을 통해 인간의 다양한 국면을 그려내는 작가로 알려져 있으며 희비극을 넘나드는 자유로운 서사와 독창적인 문체로 왕성한 창작활동을 하고 있다. 단편소설, 중편소설, 장편소설, 짧은 소설, 에세이, 칼럼, 산문 등 전방위적인 글쓰기를 지속해 왔으며 2권의 시집, 30여 권의 소설집과 장편소설, 산문집, 동화 등을 발간했다. 그의 작품은 영어, 중국어, 프랑스어, 독일어, 스페인어 등으로 번역되어 중국, 독일, 프랑스 등에서 출간되었다.

네이버캐스트에 윌리엄 셰익스피어의 희곡 '베니스의 상인'에 관한 글을 게재하였다. # 세기의 명작으로 오랜 세월 동안 전 세계의 많은 사람들에게 읽혀 온 '베니스의 상인' 속 샤일록, 안토니오, 포셔를 비롯한 다양한 캐릭터를 바라보는 새로운 방향에 대해 제시하였다.

산문집 '소풍'에선 '원효 대사와 해골물'을 연상하게 하는 이야기가 나온다. 1995년 지인과 함께 미국을 여행하던 도중 시골의 어느 햄버거 가게에서 '히케 버거'(HICKE BURGER)라는 특이한 이름의 버거를 먹게 되었다.[17]흔하디 흔한 패스트푸드에 물리던 참이어서 그런지 시골다운 정감이 있는 고유한 맛이 나는 특별한 햄버거였다고. 그래서 '히케'라는 이름도 뭔가 그 지역의 원주민 신화와 연관된 특별한 이름이라고 생각하고 점원에게 이름의 의미를 물었더니, 그냥 '치킨버거'(CHICKEN BURGER)에서 글자가 몇개 지워진 것 뿐이었단다. 아주 특별하고 신화적인 ‘벌거’

Song Sokze[1] (Korean: 성석제; born July 5, 1960) is a South Korean writer, poet and painter.[2]

Biography

Song was born on July 5, 1960, in Sangju, South Korea. He studied law at Yonsei University in Seoul,[3] Song made his literary debut in 1986 when he had five poems published in the Munhak-sasang in 1986. In 1991 he published a poetry collection and then moved to writing "very short"[4] stories that he conceived of as between poetry and short stories. Song continued to work at a day job for six years, until 1993, when he quit and devoted himself to writing and had his first short story "The Final 4.5 Seconds of My Life" published in the Summer Issue of Munhakdongne in 1995.[4]

Work

Song's works focus on ordinary character, often those at the edges of society, and he gives these characters a mixture of cleverness and naivete, then drops them into unlikely situations. His work is intentionally humorous, to the point that they have even been criticized for that humor.[5]

The Literature Translation Institute of Korea summarizes Song's work:

Song Sokze(1960~ ) is an exceptionally gifted raconteur (sic). The familiarity we find in Seong's characters, despite the fact that they seem exaggerated or even unlikely at times, lies in their embodiment of the comic and the absurd we recognize in ourselves and in people around us.
While he certainly examines the tribulations of life, he gives weighty matters a feathery touch by infusing them with humor, fast-moving wit, and suppleness of narrative style. Seong's remarkable verbal energy is apparent in Pure Heart in which a child of uncertain parentage who fails at puppy love becomes a thief, matures in that trade, and finally comes to his ruin. Though the plot is simple, Seong adroitly balances the tension between exaggeration and lies, pithy and prolix expressions, laughter and pathos to provide constant textual pleasure.[6]
