(108)A prizewinning historian and expert on Chinese foreign relations examines China's relationship with the outside world over the last 250 years, showing how the past will set the course for China's future.
Over the past 250 years of momentous change and dramatic upheaval, China has proved itself to be a Restless Empire.
Tracing China's course from the eighteenth-century Qing Dynasty to today's People's Republic, Restless Empire shows how the country's worldview has evolved. It explains how Chinese attitudes have been determined by both receptiveness and resistance to outside influence and presents the preoccupations that have set its foreign-relations agenda.
Within two decades China is likely to depose the United States as the world's largest economy. By then the country expects to have eradicated poverty among its population of more than one and a half billion, and established itself as the world's technological powerhouse. Meanwhile, some - especially its neighbours - are afraid that China will strengthen its military might in order to bend others to its will.
A new form of Chinese nationalism is rising. Many Chinese are angry about perceived past injustices and fear a loss of identity to commercial forces and foreign influences. So, will China's attraction to world society dwindle, or will China continue to engage? Will it attempt to recreate a Sino-centric international order in Eastern Asia, or pursue a more harmonious diplomatic route? And can it overcome its lack of democracy and transparency, or are these characteristics hard-wired into the Chinese system? Whatever the case, we ignore China's international history at our peril.
Restless Empire is a magisterial and indispensible history of the most important state in world affairs today.

A definite update to the pantheon of Chinese histories, with added analysis that is very clarifying. One important message is that the PRC, which advertises itself as the champion of anti-imperialism, has changed from itself as once being an empire and now, to handle the inclusion of Tibet, Xinjiang, and other non-Han territories, has become a "light" empire, but still an empire.
Written a decade ago, the author subscribed to the notion that China over time would liberalize to get along better with the rest of the world. That opinion now seems dated.

I just bought this today and have read Chapter 6 already. What a pleasure to read something so clear, intelligent, fast-paced and enjoyable. If you want something deep, but you're worried about getting stuck with a dry, academic and unappealing book - this is the one for you.

This is an extremely interesting overview of China’s relationship with the rest of the world over the past 250 or so years. However, as with all books of this kind, it risks being overtaken by events. For instance, this book was written while relations with Taiwan and China who are relatively good, something no longer the case. It was also written before the Chinese oppression of its Muslim Uighur citizens intensified. Even so, one should not dismiss the relatively optimistic predictions at the end, and as a review of the post, it is excellent.

Terrific review of Chinese identity, the formative traumas over two centuries, clearly grounded in deep experience of dialogue and interaction with people in China over several decades. Fascinating facts throughout, many drawn from Asian sources, that are arranged fairly systematically, without falling into the trap of a miscellany. Highly worthwhile read, in view of this Mandarin-speaking diplomat after four years of my own efforts to engage the Middle Kingdom.

Great, balanced and relevant history. This is history that holds the key to the present. Interesting is the pattern of insularity and the attempt to reach out and connect with Western society or global society. A must read for anyone interested in China's role today

Westad has a point of view and he doesn't let the facts get in the way of his recitation. This book is a light-weight observation based on one man's opinion. It is not well researched. The author puts forward his opinion without the benefit of references or footnotes. There are far better books than this one, and I'd recommend you read another.

Soon-to-be Yale professor Westad’s book begin as a rather unexceptional modern history of China, treading ground that’s been better addressed in other works, but it gains momentum as it goes, particularly when later fused with his work on the Soviet presence in China and closing with interesting anecdotes from his time as a teacher and his observations on modern culture and political economy.

The cover is misleading. It says it is about China from 1750 to the present, but in the first chapter it speeds through the first hundred years of its supposed scope. Also, there's about one fact every two pages. The rest is uncited fluff--the author's opinion about this and that but no concrete evidence to support his opinions. If you want a qualitative survey of Chinese modern history and its relationship with the world beyond its borders, you should not expect to find it in this book.

세진님, 오드 아르네 베스타(Odd Arne Westad) 교수의 <조용한 제국의 불안한 유산: 1750년 이후의 중국과 세계>(Restless Empire: China and the World Since 1750)에 대한 요약과 평론입니다.
