Statement of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE), the Committee on Korean Studies (CKS) of the Association for Asian Studies and Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA)

The Association for Korean Studies in Europe (AKSE), the Committee on Korean Studies (CKS) of the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) and Korean Studies Association of Australasia (KSAA) have followed with deep interest the proposal to reorganize the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS), together with the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics and the Northeast Asian History Foundation, into a new institution. As international academic organizations representing scholars and institutions engaged in Korean Studies, we wish to highlight the distinctive and indispensable role that the Academy of Korean Studies has played in supporting the development of Korean Studies beyond Korea, and our hope that this mission will continue to flourish under any new organizational structure.
For decades, the AKS has been one of the principal institutional pillars of the international Korean Studies community. Its contribution extends well beyond its own research and educational activities. Through its international programmes, the AKS provides essential support to Korean Studies scholars, programmes, conferences, publications, and initiatives at universities and research institutions around the world. Its fellowship programmes provide overseas scholars with opportunities for research in Korea and access to its resources and scholarly networks. The overseas Korean Studies which the AKS has been supporting for several decades are of paramount importance to the ‘soft power’ education diplomacy of Republic of Korea. Many former Korean Studies students ended up occupying positions in civil service, government and business around the world, and as such, the nationally beneficial outcomes of the work which the AKS has been doing extend beyond the purely academic domain. Education diplomacy is currently a main pillar of middle-power diplomacy, and AKS is one of the key funding bodies to enable this engagement - particularly through its Core programmes.
These and other programmes have a significance that cannot be measured solely in terms of institutional size, administrative efficiency, or short-term financial savings. Overseas Korean Studies has developed over decades through networks of scholars, teachers, students, libraries, research centres, and academic associations. Sustaining these networks requires stable, specialized, and internationally oriented institutional support. The AKS has accumulated unique expertise, experience, infrastructure, and international relationships, making itself indispensable in fulfilling this role.
We therefore respectfully share our assessment of the importance of the Academy of Korean Studies work to promote global Korean Studies, and our sincere hope that, in the case of any reorganization affecting the AKS, this international mission would be not only preserved but also strengthened. As overseas scholars of Korean Studies, we value continued and stable access to the research funding, fellowships, conferences, educational programmes, scholarly networks, and other forms of support that the AKS has developed throughout the decades of its tireless work.
We sincerely hope that the Korean authorities would consult closely with the international Korean Studies community and consider our opinions when making changes that could affect these programmes. The perspectives of scholars and institutions outside Korea could be useful because the consequences of institutional restructuring may extend far beyond Korea's domestic academic and administrative landscape.
AKSE, CKS and KSAA deeply appreciate the longstanding contribution of the Academy of Korean Studies to the development and internationalization of Korean Studies. Whatever institutional arrangements may ultimately be adopted, we hope that the Korean government will recognize the AKS's distinctive role as an international infrastructure for Korean Studies and ensure that this role remains fully supported.
